Welcome to the results thread for Club Bizarre 33.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part/shared tracks and especially to those who helped me with the admin (listenthroughs, vetoing etc.)
All of your help has really has been much appreciated by me, especially given the demanding couple of weeks that I've had.

Without any further delay, I now present the result of the 33rd edition of Club Bizarre, which was themed as a celebration of Queer and Black dance culture.

Here's how this works - I will announce the first 15 voters with a scoreboard after every 5 voters (so that's I think 3 scoreboards).

The scoreboard will then freeze and I will announce the final 7 voters but only the songs awarded 1-7 points with the medalists remaining unpublished.

I will then announce who has finished outside the Top 10, with positions 6-10, 5-3 revealed, and then finally 2nd and the WINNER announced.

There will be an intermission after 15 voters for approximately 30-45 minutes. Feel free to get refreshments (mulled wine etc.)

NB - urgent call out for Bré to have his calculator handy to verify the scorecards as it is incredibly tight at the top (insert your own jokes here x)

First let's remind ourselves of the list of contenders ~

SCOREBOARD AFTER 0 of 22 VOTERS:

So please get comfy, settle in, as I reveal the results for Club Bizarre 33!

Please feel free to speculate who may have sent what and do well, and we'll start in approx 30 mins ~

I missed the top 10 in the last couple of editions, so a return would be nice, but not sure what to expect as I couldn't make the listen through!

Don't think I'm gonna do too well, BUT it's nice to be back in this and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. Let's make it bizarre.

I wasn’t here for the listenthrough so I have zero idea how my song went, idk I’m withholding any predictions at this time

Only missing 2 contests since Club Bizarre’s inception, lewistgreen remains firmly in the all-time Top 10 of participants. South African DJ, producer and songwriter Sanele Sithole (aka Sun-El Musician) came 6th in CB22 with “Uhuru”, and is returned here as lewistgreen’s entrant for CB33 with the collaboration “Respond”. This track features the vocals of Zimbabwean songwriter and producer Miči, whose distinctive, warm vocals perfectly match Sun-EL Musician's signature Afro-house production.

Respond was one I discovered from Sian Eleri on Radio 1 and I'd been looking for the perfect opportunity to send.

As for my 12, I'm a huge fan of the original track and the remix here stays quite true to that vibe so it had to be top.

Kevin Aviance is acclaimed New York–based drag queen and singer, and as a performer blends house music, club culture, and avant-garde performance. “Beautiful” is a confident adn uplifting track which embodies the spirit of New York’s underground club culture, serving as a good example of his influences and impacts on underground music and queer nightlife.

As I mentioned in the voting thread, that song snuck into my chart at the time, but I had forgotten about it so thanks for the reminder <3

I think it was a Radio 1 discovery for me too.

I was really stuck on what to send to this edition (despite implementing the theme), I think I had too many options. In the end I went with something new that I heard for the first time that week. DJ, producer & vocalist FAUZIA first broke through with new music in 2020 with a series of self-released EPs, one of which featured the Kelela collaboration “When It's All Over” which made Crack Magazine’s Top 25 Tracks of 2020. Her latest single “The Way” wears the influences that she regularly spins on her monthly NTS shows, blending footwork, and jungle with its energetic and propulsive ending. Despite moving on to making her own music, she still regularly works with and produces for Duval Timothy, Tirzah, Elias Rønnenfelt, Special Request and Kelela (among others). FAUZIA also keeps one foot in the club: last September she supported Patti Smith at St. Paul’s Cathedral then DJed with dBridge at late night Glasgow staple The Flying Duck.

The Pet Shop Boys need little introduction, they are one of the most influential and enduring electronic/pop acts of all-time with strong links to club culture and the queer dance scene. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s songs on love, politics, and modern life rose to prominence in the wider culture during the 1980s against a backdrop of minial representation of LGBTQ acts within the mainstream and reached their imperial phase with 3 UK #1 singles and the Christmas Number One of 1987, when Brenda Lee/Elvis Presley cover “Always On My Mind” stormed to #1 - famously holding “Fairytale of New York” at number 2 for Christmas. “Bet She’s Not Your Girlfriend” was the B‑side to the 1991 single Where the Streets Have No Name (I Can’t Take My Eyes Off You).

Host's artist produces for Tirzah? I didn't like Tirzah's last album (although I only gave it one chance) but I love her first two, particularly Devotion wub I really recommend that album for an intriguing and warm electronic hug! Such a chill listen.

Dehaney Nia Lishahn Hunt (aka Nia Archives) was born in September 1999 and is part of the vanguard of new and emerging Gen Z artists embracing the sound and influences of jungle and drum and bass (which originally emerged at the start of that decade) forging its revival into the 2020s. Debut album Silence is Loud fused these influences with modern electronic production and the title track from it serves as Chez Wombat’s 33rd entry to the contest.

Dobbo is the most successful participant in Club Bizarre with 6 wins in total - starting as he meant to go on with back-to-back wins in the first two editions! For CB33 he has sent Arun Verone’s “Empty Soul”, by the Birmingham-based DJ and producer. The track exemplifies his vibrant house sound influences. Inspired a decade ago by Jamie Jones' Boiler Room set, Verone gravitated toward house production and steadily rose through the Midlands scene, releasing music on the influential British label Defected. “Empty Soul” is an upbeat, dancefloor-driven track that embodies the ethos of house music as a space for expression, emotional release, and community.

Thomas Sampson (TS7), acclaimed DJ and producer from Bradford, reinvented Katie May's 2007 underground classic “You’re Not The Only One” as the vibrant dance track “Only One” which serves as Jimwatts entry to CB33. Retaining his signature bassline and UK garage sound, TS7 modernised the hook and preserved the emotional core of Katie May's vocals. The UK bassline scene experienced a resurgence in the mid-to-late 2000s, and this track taps into that nostalgia, celebrating the original anthem that dominated the clubs during TS7’s formative years.

Hope some of you enjoyed this trashy bop! I discovered 'Only One' while setting off for holiday and kept it as a BJSC potential - maybe it would have found a few more fans there, but I'd passed on sending it enough times already...

Mattias returns to the contest, in which he dominated during its first few years, by sending IAMDDB (I Am Diana De Brito), an Angolan-Portuguese rapper now based in Manchester. Her track “Where Did The Love Go?” was originally released as the lead single from her project Love Is War, Volume 6, and she describes as a “love letter from her higher self that emphasizes healing, self‑care, letting go, and inner strength rather than romantic attachment.
