Commentary:

For the second year running, Chappell Roan loses a closely fought battle for my end of year No.1 with a big UK hit to a song that didn't chart in the UK. Step forward the hugely talented X Factor 2017 runner-up Grace Davies, who still has never charted a single despite releasing so much quality pop in the last few years. But Super Love Me is her best yet, with ABBA vibes running through its core it was instant love for me and I've been hammering it ever since.

Beautiful 90s-esque ballad The Subway from Chappell Roan became her second No.1 of the year in the summer and was also very instant for me, with its Roxette/Cranberries/Corrs/Alanis kind of vibe, an absolute beauty. And, as is often the way, the Melodifestivalen winner/Swedish Eurovision entry finds its way into my top three of the year although KAJ's comedy sauna anthem doesn't quite follow in the footsteps of Euphoria, Heroes, Hold Me Closer and Tattoo in topping my end of year chart, coming in third. It's not the only Eurovision entry to feature high either this year, as German anthem Baller from Abor & Tynna finishes fifth, itself becoming a surprise top 40 hit in the UK following the contest. Sandwiched in between Eurovision is my surprise BJSC runner-up, Korku from ARGO, an absolutely storming and very powerful Turkish language rock song.

Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan made her long awaited (by me) comeback and released her best single in over 20 years in the form of Better Broken, which finishes in 6th place, just ahead of Ed Sheeran's best single in many years, Azizam, and RAYE's huge smash (and eventual UK No.1 hit) WHERE IS MY HUSBAND! Rounding off the top ten is another of my BJSC entries, the sorely underrated (in the results) Loss Is Not Infinite by God Colony & Roy, an absolutely wonderful electronic Scouse spoken word anthem that divulges many wise words of wisdom. Lady Gaga proves her eternal relevance as she rounds off the top ten with her huge global pop smash Abracadabra.

In a year where I was quite pleased with my BJSC entries, five more line up in the 11-20 section, including my first winner in 11 years, Luukered by SADU, which appropriately finishes 11th. The huge No.1 hit Man I Need by Olivia Dean and the smash No.2 Love Me Not by Rayvn Lenae also appear in this section. In a fairly solid year for UK No.1s, there are also appearances in the top 100 by chart toppers from Lola Young, Kylie Minogue, Taylor Swift, HUNTR/X and Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club.

Despite looking like she could do the double, Grace Davies was overtaken in the final throes of the year by a surprisingly amazing comeback album from Lily Allen. West End Girl is one of the first albums in ages I've listened to over and over again in sequence in full, and while none of its individual songs cracked my top 50 of the year, I think this is one of those albums that is better appreciated as a whole than in bits – I can't wait to own it physically!

Grace's wonderful and very long overdue debut album finishes second while yet another amazing album from Lady Gaga is third. Sarah McLachlan's best work since 2003 and Taylor Swift's latest complete the top five. Last year's No.1 album went to Sabrina Carpenter but its follow up lands at No.12 this year.

Thank you, I saw it high up in your playlist and was glad somebody else loved it so much!

I'm surprised that I know (and like) almost a quarter of these songs!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds FUFN one of the highlights off JADE's album - it's almost level with AOMD for me, but I seem to be the only person with that point of view!

I'll have to check out the songs I don't know from your Top 10 (I know and love 6 of them!). I love 'The Subway', though 'The Giver' just about edges it for me I think!

The Giver was great fun and got a hard time from some when it came out, but The Subway is so beautiful, both very different though of course!

What The Hell Just Happened? ❤️

Best UK Eurovision entry from 21st century, even better than Flying The Flag.
