He was somewhat in his prime in 1998 and seemed to hit that audience quite well. It wasn't quite the same in 2016, not just in terms of his capital but the industry generally.
January 22Jan 22 Yeah it's not puzzling at all. Albums sales between 1998 and 2016 were a world apart, and he was also well past his career peak by then.

I never regarded Swing as a "proper" studio album. Heavy Entertainment is pretty good and I suppose it did quite well for sales of that time (top 20 of the year), but deserved to be higher in the list. I wonder how streaming sales look..... (apart from obv Greatest Hits way in front)

It followed on from him singing ‘Me and Mrs Jones’ on the Bridget Jones soundtrack, which got a lot of attention and surprised people. It was the TV special Live At The Albert that made that album such a success. It was ‘4-quadrant’ prime time viewing just before Christmas. The theory at the time was that fans bought two copies - one for them and one for their Nan for Christmas.
