Sophie Ellis-Bextor: Singles Rate (2026) - The Results (Full Results on Page 10)

You see, I really do not think of that as being a single. It is a solid album track on a great album though.

It's a shame how that era turned out in the end, especially as 'If You Go' so deserved a release. I think realistically it was done for as soon as 'Me And My Imagination' flopped and Radio 1 were done with her after that.

  • 'Catch You' is great fun, the rather crazed lyrics give it an infectious, determined energy and I like the mix of pop-rock with electro sounds. I've just reminded myself of Cathy Dennis' writing credi

Breaking the Circle deserved better. The production is my favourite thing about it but it’s definitely among the best of her later singles

#12. Today The Sun's On Us - 8.093

Highest Scores: 10: (...readyforit), Lowest Scores: 6: (Jade)

At the #12 spot is the stunning 'Today The Sun's On Us', which managed to outrank the #13 song by 0.5 points. Released in August 2007 as the 3rd and ultimately final single from Sophie's 3rd studio album 'Trip The Light Fantastic'. It was written by Sophie herself, Steve Robson, and Nina Woodford and produced by Jeremy Wheatley and Brio Taliaferro. Upon release the song gained generally positive reviews, with most appreciating the lyrics and overall tone of the song. But was a commercial failure by only managing to to peak at #64 on the UK singles chart. To date the song is Sophie's 18th best selling single in the UK.

Always thought that the #64 chart peak that it got was rather harsh, but considering the previous single didn't perform well & releasing a ballad is always a risky choice. This is a warm melodic guitar pop ballad that takes a totally different direction when compared to her earlier releases, which is what probably caught many off-guard at the time. Sure it runs at a slower pace and doesn't quite catch your attention like her uptempo numbers do, its a strong track and makes of a intimate yet interesting impression on you. Maybe releasing this as the 4th single would have been a better move instead. As it stands it's still a firm standout in her discography.

Any clues please?

I absolutely adore Today The Suns On Us and remember feeling gutted for Sophie when it only reached #64 in the UK charts, it deserved far better than that.

Glad to see it receive some love and recognition here.

Its an uptempo dance pop disco sound

I feel like it could be a few ones, but I’ll predict Crying At The Discotheque.

At the time I thought it was a mistake single choice, but I can kinda see now why they went with it as a radio-friendly option. I think at that point nothing would've done well anyway, no matter what they chose.

The single version removes that guitar bit after the middle-8, which totally makes the song for me!

'Take Me Home' probably next.

Better bloody not be!

I'll say either Crying @ the Discotheque or Me and My Imagination next I'd say.

That’s the one I want to drop out next, but I don’t think it will.

#11. Crying at the Discoteque - 8.291

Highest Scores: 10: (Viper, Scene. Liam.k.,Jester), Lowest Scores: 5: (Nina West)

At the #11 spot is Sophie's cover of 'Crying at the Discoteque', which was originally sung by Swedish band Alcazar back in 2000. Sophie released her version in September 2020 as the lead single to promote her greatest hits album 'Songs from the Kitchen Disco' which also included a number of other cover versions of songs by artists such as New Order, Pulp as well as 'My Favourite Things' from The Sound of Music. The music video was directed by Sophie Muller and was filmed in a day in seven London music venues: Bush Hall, Apollo Theatre, St Moritz, Clapham Grand, Heaven, Omeara, and the O2. In the video Sophie performed the song in empty rooms, raising awareness of the effect of the Pandemic.

Sophie does do a great job with his cover and the song does fit well within the sentimental and nostalgic tone of her discography, but to me the song stayed way too close to the original for it to fully stand out on its own. Obviously you voters disagreed with me as I was the one who gave it the lowest score.

I've always enjoyed Sophie's cover of 'Crying At The Discoteque'. Is it very similar to the original? Yes, but that doesn't phase me at all. Very happy to see it do this well.

Just for fun here's a reminder of how many songs are left from each era =

theaudience - 0/4

Read My Lips - 3/5

Shoot From The Hip - 0/2

Trip The Light Fantastic - 2/4

Make A Scene - 2/6

Wanderlust - 0/4

Familia - 0/4

The Song Diaries/Kitchen Disco - 0/2

Hana - 1/4

Perimenopop - 1/6

Collaborations - 1/4

As you can see there has been some big changes here compared to last time. 4 eras have dropped out with 'Shoot From The Hip', 'Wanderlust', 'Familia' & 'Greatest Hits' are all out of the running with none of them making the final 10. 'Read My Lips' is still holding strong with 3 left. 'Trip The Light Fantastic' still has half left with 2 (all of which has made the top 20 here). 'Make A Scene' still has 2 but has lost 4. 'Hana' & 'Perimenopop' are hanging on in there with 1 song left from each era.

'Take Me Home' is not bad or anything, but compared to many of her other disco pop songs in the rate, I enjoy it not as much, hence my 7 rating even if it might have been a bit too low.

Love 'Crying At The Discotheque', both the Alcazar and the Sophie version!

'Take Me Home' I can take or leave, never really rated it that much.

#10. Hypnotized (ft Wuh Oh) - 8.375

Highest Scores: 10: (Mango, JosephStyles), Lowest Scores: 6: (Nina West)

Kicking off the top 10 is 'Hypnotized', a collaboration between Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Scottish musician Wuh Oh, released in July 2022 by Douglas Valentine and Cooking Vinyl Records. Originally it was released as a standalone single, it was later included on the deluxe edition of Sophie's 7th studio album 'Hana' & peaked at #37 on the UK downloads chart. The song was written by Wuh Oh and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and produced by Wuh Oh and Sega Bodega. It was first performed live by Sophie on her 'Kitchen Disco Tour' in March 2022 and includes an extra verse and was included on the concert version of the album titled 'Kitchen Disco - Live at the London Palladium'.

This song has really grown on me since this rate began and wished that I had given it a higher score 😕. Fast paced, melodic and off-kilter, this song is a hell of a lot of fun and blends experimental melodies with her signature dance pop sound successfully, resulting in one of Sophie's most bold and daring tracks. A solid little number from the latter half of Sophie's career.
