  • 'Catch You' is great fun, the rather crazed lyrics give it an infectious, determined energy and I like the mix of pop-rock with electro sounds. I've just reminded myself of Cathy Dennis' writing credi

Breaking the Circle deserved better. The production is my favourite thing about it but it’s definitely among the best of her later singles

The next song to drop will be a lead single

Any guesses?

Really hoping it Take Me Home. I love Catch You, so hoping that’s not out next.

'Hypnotized' is such a banger! I can almost forgive her for the ridiculous pronunciation of "hypnotis-ed". Almost.

The pronunciation really is incredibly jarring. It lets it down which is frustrating as it’s great fun

That makes me remember this interview she did in Australia back in 2022. She's asked about the lyrics at the 2min 2sec mark. 😂

#09. Take Me Home - 8.531

Highest Scores: 10: (Nina West, Josh, Jessie Where, Jester), Lowest Scores: 6: (Mango)

At the #9 spot is Sophie's debut solo single 'Take Me Home', released in August 2001 as the lead single from Sophie's debut album 'Read My Lips'. The song was originally recorded by Cher back in 1979. Being a cover of Cher's song, the song retains writing credits for Bob Esty and Michele Aller, while Ellis-Bextor included new lyrics written by herself. Upon release the song was a commercial success by peaking at #2 on the UK singles chart and managed some success worldwide with a top 10 peak in Ireland and a top 20 peak in New Zealand, as well as making minor impressions in Italy, Germany and Netherlands. Before the release of the cover, Cher's management deemed the lyrics overly sexual, but Sophie later admitted in her autobiography that she made this fact up. Despite the song being a huge success, it was largely overshadowed by her follow up single 'Murder On The Dancefloor'.

Even to this day this gem of a track still seems largely forgotten. This marked a great debut for Sophie that would set the tone for the rest of her career. I do like the original Cher version, but this is a fresh and refined reworking which makes this a perfect example of her early 00's disco pop sound that has aged remarkably well. Catchy, camp and brimming with style, this marks a perfect introduction to one of the most interesting artists of the era. Yes this doesn't quite pop in the same way as 'Murder On The Dancefloor' does, but nonetheless its still a fantastic track and a solid starting point.

Hypnotized is such a banger, truly one of her best for me!! The prononciation just makes it more fun for me lol

I do like Take Me Home but I'm glad it hasn't finished any higher, Sophie's just got so many singles that I absolutely adore.

A reflection of how strong Sophie's discography is when the #8 song has an average of 8.5.

#08. Freedom of the Night - 8.656

Highest Scores: 10: (Liam.k., Jester), Lowest Scores: 7.5: (Mango, Jade)

The last of Sophie's 2020's era singles drop now at #8 with 'Freedom of the Night', released in October 2024 as the lead single from Sophie's 8th studio album 'Perimenopop'. Following the resurgence of 'Murder on the Dancefloor' after its inclusion in the 2023 film 'Saltburn', Sophie signed a new record deal with Universal Music Group and this song marked her first major label single in 14 years. The song was written by Sophie herself alongside Richard Stannard, Duck Blackwell and Shura and upon release it peaked at #5 on the UK Downloads chart and #8 on the Sales chart, this would her highest charting single on those charts in several years. The music video was directed by Sophie Muller and Theo Adams, and serves as a continuation to the video for 'Murder On The Dancefloor' with Sophie taking on the role as a dance mom determined to see her daughter win a dance competition. Colin Stinton also reprised his role from the previous video as one of the dance judges.

This marks a solid comeback for Sophie as it blends modern pop production with a nostalgic disco pop feel. Brimming with confidence, strong beats and a solid chorus resulting in a fun classy pop tune and one of her best releases in several years. This was a great lead single choice and shame that it didn't make more of a chart impact upon release.
