Opening Weekend: £6,777,552 (#1)

It's somehow hard to believe that this will actually be the final 'Conjuring' movie like it was advertised. The two previous movies had underperformed compared to the earlier films ("The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" in 2021 and 'The Nun II' in 2023 both opened to less than half of the earlier films in their respective series) but this smashed it out the park, having the best opening weekend in the franchise and only taking two weeks to overtake 'The Nun' to be the biggest overall film. This had the biggest opening weekend of any film ever worldwide, knocking 'It' off the top spot after 8-years.

Opening the weekend after 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' and, like that film, showing how good marketing it is to sell the film as a final chapter, 'Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale' increased on the second film 'Downton Abbey: A New Era' (£15.1 million, 2022). It was 15-years since the show debuted when this series closer released which isn't bad going for a period drama that always had a reputation for skewing older audience-wise. With $100 million banked worldwide, this was a very respectable end for the long-running, world-dominating British drama.

Dean DeBlois made the odd decision of signing-on to remake this own film in live-action, only 15-years after the animation's release. But nostalgia for the series is obviously already alive as this comfortably-outgrossed the 2010 original (£17.4 million) and only ended a couple of million behind the the biggest film in the franchise "How To Train Your Dragon 2" (£25.5 million). Despite a stronger start than some of the recent Disney live action remakes, it ended up falling short of both "The Little Mermaid" (£27.6 million) and 'Mufasa: The Lion King' (£32.3 million). Disney has another one higher in this list too which shows they are still the kings of live-action remakes. Who will be Dreamwork's next attempt: 'Monsters vs. Aliens'?, 'Megamind'?, 'Shrek'???

It's official, 2025 was the first year since 2011 (aside from the COVID year of 2020) where no MCU-film is in amongst the top 10 films of the year. 2026 will now be pivotal for the Marvel's cinematic future with big-hitters in 'Spider-Man' and 'The Avengers' to come. It's been a long time since we've been able to say this but Marvel just couldn't complete with DC last year. However, it's still not all bad news for Marvel's first family as this has done nearly double the £12.4 million that both of the original two F4 films made.

We're finally at the top 10 starting tomorrow. Any predictions?

So grateful that 'Marty Supreme' did bigger things than the bore that was 'A Complete Unknown' when it comes to the Timmy movies.

'F1' being Brad Pitt's highest grossing movie worldwide feels crazy to me considering the length of his career, but I guess he's never played a superhero thinking.gif

'Snow White' making the top 30 doesn't feel too awful considering all the controversy + hate directed towards it. I'm glad that Rachel Zegler has managed to rebound, at least in terms of UK popularity, thanks to her theatre ventures.

I didn't realise that 'Weapons' was that much of a hit. I need to get around to checking it out on streaming at some point as it's one of only two movies that had nominations in the top 8 categories of the Oscars this year that I haven't seen (and quite a big one to be missing, given it scored an acting win)!

Kicking off the top 10 is the highest-placed film that missed out on #1, 'Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning' that had to settle at #2 for three weeks behind another film still to come making the final film, the first in the franchise to miss out on top spot. It's debut weekend was the 7th biggest opening of 2025 and was the second-highest ever in the franchise (behind 'Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning: Part One' (£10,391,016, #1, 2023) so it wasn't all bad news. In fact, this also edged out the previous film to be the biggest hit in the UK overall. Despite this, it's crazy budget (between $300-400 million) meant that it was not a profitable film falling just short of $600 million worldwide.

Despite Marvel's historically poor year, we do still get Superhero representation in the top 10 by James Gunn's new DC-Universe starter 'Superman'. This didn't get off to a particularly fast start (it opened just over half of what 'Man Of Steel' (£11,198,786, #1) did when it kicked off the DCEU in 2013 but good word-of-mouth saw it stick around well and end it's run less than £2 million off where 'Man Of Steel' ended. Other than that, 'Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice' (£36.5 million) and 'Suicide Squad' (£33.2 million), this beat every other film from the DCEU and they were released at peak-superhero fever so there's positive signs for Gunn attempts to reboot. It will fascinating to see what 'Supergirl' does this summer.

The EOY top 10 finisher than no-one saw coming, 'The Housemaid' snuck in its release in last December and more than took advantage of the extra boost Christmas and New Years holidays always provides. If you take out previews, this actually increased 26% in weekend two and didn't hit #1 until 2026. Sydney Sweeney has already turned a Christmas release/January smash hit in before with 'Anyone But You' (£11.6 million, EOY #23, 2023) in 2023/2024 but after a run of flops last year and extremely negative press, it was hard to see her outdoing that tenfold with this. Based upon a popular novel by Freida McFadden, this became director Paul Feig's biggest ever hit, overtaking the £23 million of 'Bridesmaids' in 2011.

The Jurassic World trilogy was massive but lost steam as it went on both critically and commercially. I remember being shocked when Scarlett Johansson signed-on for the soft-reboot/sequel attempt and her star-power was enough for this to just about do better than 'Dominion' (£35 million) in the UK but it couldn't help buck the trend worldwide as this became the first 'World' film to not hit £1 billion dollars ($869 million). I still haven't seen this because, although I'm a bit of a defender of the second film, 'Dominion' was so bad that it's really saw my interest in the franchise evaporate.

The #1 film of the year in America missed the top-5 in the UK as 'Zootropolis 2' (or 'Zootopia 2' overseas) couldn't quite find the same audience. However, the first film only made £24 million in the UK so this was still a large improvement for the sequel. Disney won't be worried though because this was printing money worldwide. It's $556 million opening weekend (including $272 million in China alone) is the fourth-biggest weekend of any film ever. It stuck around well, still doing great business in 2026 so it's safe to say it was a UK hit, despite the slow start.

Or we could be uber generous and count his 2-second cameo as The Vanisher in 'Deadpool 2' and call that his biggest hit instead 😄
