They played it because of Sabrina , it could have been any old singer (Liza minelli, Barbra Streisand etc) and they would have played it if Sabrina Carpenter was on it

I mean, obviously duh. But I'll still take it.

I thought R1 had hung up their boots on Madonna's music and it was always gonna be borderline whether they were gonna open their hearts to her and give her one more chance, but she's clearly back in v

Well no because then Alex Warren wouldn't be on there

Just realised it must be about 20 years now since Brittany Murphy herself was on the Radio 1 playlist as a feature on Oakenfold's 'Faster Kill Pussycat', tune ❤️

I don't think they're only playing it because of Sabrina.

I think they expected it to do well because of all the online hype and didn't wanna be on the back foot again after Padam Padam.

And yes, they might have realised they are more of a new music station than a youth one after all.

I bet hardly anyone on here is 15-29 (I can tell by their pop nostalgia anecdotes from like 1999 or much earlier) and a lot of us appear to still be R1 listeners. My two closest friends are 40 and 43 and listen to it all the time!

Plus there must have been lots of times where they have snubbed veteran ft. hot chart star songs.

Admittedly the only one I can think of right now is Pet Shop Boys ft. Example in 2013 which was ace but there's gotta be loads more!

And there's been a lot of Madonna awareness amongst the younger people over the past three years anyway with Popular and the multiple re-entries.

Also it's her best and most instantly appealing lead single since 2008 and they'd have been ALL OVER it if was by any female pop star they normally support anyway!

im correct in saying the playlist will be halted next week and a big weekend playlist will be in affect?

I do feel like pretty much Sabrina did the heavy lifting, she's a hot current artist they'd playlist anything by although there was a lot of online hype also. I think if it was a lesser high-profile act like Bebe Rexha or Tove Lo they wouldn't have given it the time of day, but it's a great strategic play from Warner and it's fulfilling what they set out to do.

I'm just glad to see them eating their words after how they spoke about her in 2015 around 'Living For Love' time.

If they are to follow the same timeline as previously then the 15th and 22nd May will be a Big Weekend playlist

I’d say it’s a bit of both from the opinions above Re Madonna. Having Sabrina on it makes it a lot easier for them to take the risk with Madge.

I remember a time before 1994 when they played everything depending on whether they like it or not. Not based on breakthrough years.

Nice adds for Madonna, Zara, Ayra, FISHER, Maisie and Slayyyter. I haven't heard Alex yet but I'm sure it'll be mid as always.

This one is definitely a bit more mid than 'Fever Dream' was!

No real surprise for Alex given the success of his mid songs, safe prior to the new album.

TUNES OF THE WEEK:

Dean McCullough: Blossoms - Joke About Divorce

Greg James: Nia Archives - Boys In Blue

Rickie, Melvin & Charlie: Nectar Woode - Naturally

Matt & Mollie: Mulaa Joans - Birthday Makeup

Going Home: Madonna x Sabrina Carpenter - Bring Your Love

Oh the new Nia getting breakfast time plays😍

The new Nia singles are great, I wouldn't mind if Danger is removed a bit early and replaced with Boys In Blue.
