4th October 2026

It's 2 weeks on top for Miley Cyrus' Redlights, holding off a challenge from Jungle as they get a 3rd top 3 of 2026 with Where Are You Now at 3, and Martha & The Vandellas classic 60's Motown Northern Soul stomper Heatwave is at 4, only their 2nd top 5 after Dancing In The Street did the trick in 1969! Jimmy Mack climbs to 16 for a 4th top 20 57 years late. Martha Reeves is still recording new material to boot. Dagny gets some Rain into the top 10 as Stormy Weather drops faces with Sunshine and a Heatwave to combat.

Inspiral Carpets replace themselves in the top 40, Haircut 100 make it a second top 40 in the 2020's and 44 years on from the original success, though Nick Heyward has always been grabbing chart positions over the decades with me. Lil Nas X is back for the first time in a while at 77, as World's Greatest captures the vibe of Outkast's Hey Ya, and Carly Rae Jepsen's album track Amalfi Coast joins Dancefloor on the list at 86 for a 4th in 2026. The Rubettes add another classic oldie to the ones on the chart already as debut hit Sugar Baby Love returns 52 years later - it had two top 5 runs in 1974, one before it became a UK hit.

We've Only Just Begun had a slot in a streaming TV series, and sounded great, so Carpenter's 1971 classic love song for newly-weds returns for a 3rd time, but has never topped my charts. Jessie Ware's most-recent single cropped up in Sitges' El Piano bar on video, so Sauna finally debuts here, her 3rd of 2026, but the even naughtier and fabber Ride still needs to be a hit single. That leaves a 60's surfer instrumental to return to my charts for The Ventures - Hawaii 5-0 had one of the most exciting title credits of any TV show, ever, and ran for almost 10 years, long enough to get a UK re-issue and charter for me in 1975. A few weeks back, one of those 50's to 80's revue shows had a cracking band backing the various singers, and the great thing about instrumentals is it could just as easily have been the original band. It sounded thumpingly fab, and in at 99.

Hey John!

I'm very surprised at how well love sensation has done here for you. That remix is great!

Another climb for Carly. I'm so happy this has finally grown on you a lot now.

A late new entry for sauna 😮 it's not bad at all and was immediately my favourite from her since save a kiss which is clearly her best but it didn't warranted repeated listens.

Fab stuff 🎉

Hey John,

Stupid Song dropping hard 🥲

Carly Top40!! That's a bop!! 😍

Jungle Top3! 😊

Hi John. Hope all is good with you and that you enjoy Lulu on Sunday. All Ok here. I did get to take over the radio on Friday. Only because the radio police was off sick. Nevertheless I was given strict instructions to only play songs they knew, which meant 70s/80s/90s stuff. Not that I minded in the slightest. Of course I slipped in the odd obscure track here and there which got no reaction at all. Still, it made a refreshing change from Olivia Dean, Alex Warren and Bruno Mars on a constant loop. As ever, my faves:

Hi John,

nice to see Inspiral Carpets and Haircut 100 in your Top 40. The Carpets are one of my favourite bands of all time, particularly their early 90's stuff is brilliant.
