Posted March 30, 200718 yr our 'friend' in the Assembly, the (dis)Honourable Rhodri Morgaaaaarghn has decided Wales should stub out before England, so from Monday April 2nd (should be the 1st)... our bars and clubs will become ghost-towns (if there'll be any left by Christmas).... Any views?
March 30, 200718 yr I think it's AWFUL and I have never smoked. Public places, restaurants... that I can maybe understand but BARS? I have no sympathy for someone who is sensitive to smoke in a BAR. What about alcohol? Loud music? Dancing? Why not go sit in an empty parking lot and have a chat? I am exaggerating I realize but unless you have asthma or something, quit complaining and find somewhere else to go. The worst part is, the ban where I live also demands smokers walk like 15 feet from the nearest building. WTF? You're not just kicking them out of the building but they have to stand in the street dodging taxis so they can have a smoke? Absurd.
March 30, 200718 yr whilst the measure may be a bit draconian ..... I for one would like the choice to be able to go out for an evening and not come home stinking of smoke. ...but that doesn't mean I agree with the blanket nature of the bans. (but then again I still don't understand why anyone chooses to smoke ....)
March 30, 200718 yr one person smoking in the pub last night, ONE, and that bast*rds smoke found its way to my n clares noses which we found irritating. ban now... ill defend my right NOT to be contaminated with that poison...... pubs are DRINKING houses, maybe the problem would be solved if there were specific pubs where smoking was allowed for those who want it.
March 30, 200718 yr Author maybe the problem would be solved if there were specific pubs where smoking was allowed for those who want it. Surely that'd be the sensible option... but, as we're talking about Labour here - when was the last time they did anything sensibly? I'm pleased the truth is finally coming out about the 'successful' ban in Scotland and Ireland. The absolute propaganda that's been reported about the bans there has been exposed as total lies... it hasn't worked, it's affected business humungously, many jobs have been lost, and a record number of pubs and clubs have closed since the ban. As my Canandian friend said.... these non-smokers were very vocal about banning smoking in Canada.... and now they've succeeded.... and smoking is banned everywhere - where are these non-smokers now? Because all those once-bustling bars are now empty......
March 30, 200718 yr I'm a non-smoker, and I always have been (well, apart from the odd fag I cadge off mates as an accompaniment to my drinking  ). I just want to get that out of the way now so I can't be accused of any bias... And, while I dont particularly like the smell of smoke or my clothes and hair smelling of smoke, I am of the opinion that bars, clubs, etc are ADULT ENVIRONMENTS for LEGAL ADULT ACTIVITIES... Smoking, the last time I looked, was LEGAL, so frankly what the fukk is with this ban sh!t??? Rob, I recognise the fact that you might be irritated by it, but Consie has a very valid point, smoking is no more of an 'irritant' than the things he/she puts forward.. Loud, obnoxious drunks are irritating too, but, hey, whaddaya gonna do.....? It's a pub, you just gotta suck it up innit....? And frankly, I'd rather have people smoking in a pub than people drag their kids along to watch mummy and daddy get pissed up.... What kind of thing is that to teach...? Of course there's the health issue, but, put it this way, I dont know how anyone can really talk about their lungs being 'polluted' when they are in a pub or club necking down pint after pint or bottle after bottle, all of which 'pollutes' your liver... So, lung cancer is somehow worse than liver chirrosis.... I would've thought both were pretty fukkin' terminal.... I'm with Consie - restaurants, yes; public transport, yes; public buildings, yes; bars/clubs, NO..... Russ is quite correct, bars and clubs will lose business because of this, Scotland, which has the ban in place already, has seen a downturn... I was up there recently and was greeted with half-empty bars... Sure, it made getting a drink a bit easier, but surely half empty pubs is not a good thing in the long run...
March 30, 200718 yr As my Canandian friend said.... these non-smokers were very vocal about banning smoking in Canada.... and now they've succeeded.... and smoking is banned everywhere - where are these non-smokers now? Because all those once-bustling bars are now empty...... Exactly... It's like all these people who said "well, we dont go to pubs cos of the smoke"... Well, okay, you've been granted your request, now where the fukk ARE YOU BLOODY PEOPLE THEN?????  Sitting at home, rubbing your hands with glee and being smug in your own self bloody righteousness because you've shat on someone else's party.... Sad, really sad.... My mate manages a goth/alternative pub in Camden, and he's fukkin' DREADING this ban hitting him, because more than half the bloody patrons of the place light up... His pub is seriously gonna take a dump, and it'll likely close down..... <_<

March 30, 200718 yr and those that don't drink ^_^, and go out for meals with children then? Take the kids to a restaurant or a cafe, simple as... I seriously do not believe that Pubs are the proper environment for impressionable youngsters... Is it really good for them to hear and see a bunch of adults get p!ssed....? Or act loud and obnoxious..? Or start a fight or summat...? I don't think so... I am very much of the opinion that bars and clubs should really be 'adult' reserves.... Get granny and grandad to babysit for a few hours if you wanna go out and have a couple of a weekend... Fair enough if you choose not to drink, but put it this way, would a non-drinker expect other people in the pub to stop drinking because they didn't particularly like it or care for it...? I dont think so.. And before you say, "ah, but pubs are for the sale of alcohol"... Sure, but in every pub you see a ciggie machine (well, not anymore in the places where smoking is now banned of course.... <_< , but they used to...) as well, so pubs are in the business of selling both alcohol and cigarettes, the two LEGAL drugs (I know I'm labouring this point, but really, I dont think it can be stressed enough - tobacco is legal, no getting round it..)
March 30, 200718 yr Author and those that don't drink ^_^, and go out for meals with children then? if you don't drink... why on earth are you IN a drinking establishment? It's akin to an atheist going to church... ridiculous. And, as Scott says - children have NO place whatsoever in bars.... for meals or otherwise. I find yelling brats racing round my feet inside OR out in a beergarden FAR more irritating than someone having a fag in the corner. And I always have done - BEFORE I started smoking. This ban is a victory for the pious, self-righteous do-gooders... who are not backed up by a SINGLE proven medical fact. Even the Doctor who first associated lung cancer with smoking says, quite clearly... he sees NO link between so-called 'second-hand smoking' and any form of cancer. And see how smug these people will be when we have no bars, social clubs, workingmen's clubs, nightclubs. Because that's what's going to happen.... publicans may as well close up shop now, because our social lives, as we know it, end here.

March 30, 200718 yr The bars and pubs around here do a sizable business selling cigarettes too, so when that is taken away, the prices of drinks will surely go up. I read an article recently about how pubs all over London are dissapearing, unable to pay rent. The ban surely can't help that...

I read an article recently about how pubs all over London are dissapearing, unable to pay rent. The ban surely can't help that... there's 13% LESS pubs and clubs in Scotland and Ireland since the ban... and that's in the space of 2 years...... the future for publicans sure does look extremely bleak. Matt Aloud... I agree with the ban in restaurants etc.... however, to ban smoking in ALL bars and clubs is just draconian. Still, perhaps the no smoking rules will encourage more people to have house parties.... staying in will become the new going out.... I love a great house party.... cheap drink, your own choice of music and people.... great stuff.
March 30, 200718 yr i think a smoking ban is rediculous. people are aloud to smoke, their aloud to buy fags so why cant they smoke in public. if people have such strong objections to public smoking they shouldnt go to pubs then
March 30, 200718 yr Eugh smoking ban. What a bag of $h!t. -_- I like the smell of pubs smelling of beer and smoke, it'll smell boring when there's no smoke in there. And it's just another example of Labour lying through their teeth, I'm sure they said they'd never bring in a total ban on smoking for ALL public places during the election build-up in 2005? :manson:
March 30, 200718 yr I'm just gonna wait and see how it'll affect us but it'll make going out so much better for me personally. Even when I was queuing up outside Brixton last Saturday someone lit a fag infront of me and it went straight into my face :puke2: in which my mate said "Come on you've only got three more months to tolerate that" But yes what's happened in Scotland and Ireland is disturbing and I'm very suprised about it too. I don't see how not allowing smoking would have made such a difference.
March 30, 200718 yr i hear and take on board the arguments for allowing smoking in pubs. im all for free choice and i wouldnt try to stop smoking totally. its a difficult one this... balancing the needs of everyone.
March 30, 200718 yr The strange thing is that why just ban them in public places? If the Government cared about the health of the public THAT much they'd ban them totally! But of course they make too much money from taxes on them :Rolleys:
March 30, 200718 yr I am happy that is it is going to be banned in england soon, it is just killing others around them, whilst also making them stink when they go out.. but thats not it... "fag burns" They hurt when drunken people smack their 'fag' in to your arm by accident -_-
