Posted March 11, 200619 yr One of my favourite bands of all time  Many classics songs and albums ^_^ Free All Angels being one of my top five albums of all time and 1977 being up there too. Free All Angels was so good that possibly one of the greatest songs of all time imo wasn't even a single :o luckily they agreed about how good it was and put it on the best of :D And I MUST say that Tim Wheeler is THE most underated songwriter in the country :(
March 11, 200619 yr Mmm...I thought they were great till Goldfinger then they totally lost it. Just my thoughts though, I liked it better when Tim's songs were simpler and he was less accomplished as a singer!
March 13, 200619 yr Free All Angels was so good that possibly one of the greatest songs of all time imo wasn't even a single :o You're referring to 'Walking Barefoot'? If so... do we actually completely share the same tastes in everything?! I don't know why some people don't like that album, it's their best by miles if you ask me. Yar, Ash were the band that finally made me pick up an instrument, so credit to 'em for that.

Yes it was 'Walking Barefoot' ;) and I'm not sure if you're into the more poppy stuff I like (Girls Aloud, Kylie etc.) but if you like them then yes we share the same taste in EVERYTHING  and if you're a drummer then my brother would LOVE to hear from you
March 13, 200619 yr Heh, nope, I'm a bassist. And a struggling guitarist. (Typical innit, I go away for one weekend and I miss so much!)
March 13, 200619 yr A great band, and so young when they first started (I believe they were 16 when they released the "Trailer" mini album...), along with Therapy? and My Bloody Valentine, they were at the forefront of the Irish Indie Rock scene of the early and mid-90s. MBV evaporated into the ether (quite appropriate considering they pioneered the whole 'Ethereal Rock' thing... ), Therapy? quite shockingly lost favour for some bizarre reason (too hard-edged for the Brit-poppers, not hard edged enough for the Metallers...?) and Ash kept getting bigger. I'm a major fan of 1977 (wonderfully unpretentious and un-selfconscious indie rock in a Nirvana/Pixies/Lemonheads stylee), quite like Nuclear Sounds (tries a bit too hard to sound mature, but more good songs than bad..), not keen at all on most of "Free All Angels" (a bit to pop/rock for me..), but very much enjoy "Meltdown" (back on form, with a bullet). And yes, Tim Wheeler is indeed a majorly under-rated song-writing talent, if the Arctic Monkeys manage to survive as long as Ash, I will be very surprised indeed.....
March 13, 200619 yr I love Ash too. I hope they do another Free All Angels esque album as I think it's undoubtably them at their finest. Meltdown was great, but it was a much darker album in way and now Charlotte's gone...it's all sad. Yesterday I watched the Tokyo dvd and nearly pissed myself laughing at Rik "This is how you be in Radiohead" *tips bottle of vinegar down his throat so his eyes go wonky*
March 13, 200619 yr Yesterday I watched the Tokyo dvd and nearly pissed myself laughing at Rik "This is how you be in Radiohead" *tips bottle of vinegar down his throat so his eyes go wonky* Genius. Rick is awesome though, he's like I AM A BIG SCARY BALD/MOHICAN/AFRO (insert this week's hairstyle) MAN AND YOU WILL OBEYYYYYYYYYY, BEEYATCH! ...either that or he's a slightly quirky drummist. And don't you think "drummist" is a great word? Ya. Me too. Booya.
March 14, 200619 yr Therapy? quite shockingly lost favour for some bizarre reason I think the original fans (up to Nurse) were alienated by their more poppy top 10 singles esp. Nowhere. Then these fans found the move to Infernal Love a bit hard to take. By the time they released "Suicide Pact : You First" the band had lost too many fans by altering their sound so radically between albums. Still one of the best bands on the "retro" circuit though...and I'll openly admit that's where they should be. Their new songs are all pretty naff. Now, back to Ash...Trailer was one of my favourite records of 1994, but something just happened to them during the recording of 1977...and the resulting album was bland, singles aside. Well, being one of the original fans myself from the days of "Pleasure Death" ("I'M BITTER. I'M TWISTED/JAMES JOYCE IS FUKKIN' MY SISTER!!!"   ), etc, I kinda see where you're getting at with the "Infernal Love" angle, I have to confess to being a bit sorta...gaaaaah about it myself tbh..... But I stuck with em through it, i I saw them play a year or so back in London, they've still got the hard edge about them, but yeh, they need to come back with some strong material...
March 14, 200619 yr A good band although there last album was a bit of a dissapointment but I love "Orpheous" and my fav song of theres is "Burn Baby Burn".

Yup, we agree 100% except I saw them in Aberdeen a year or so back. There were still some fans there who were singing along to their new stuff, but it was mainly people in their thirties or forties back to listen to Screamager, Potato Junkie and Teethgrinder.
March 14, 200619 yr Well, they've not really given us that much...but they should be praised for doing their style of music in their own accents and not affecting an American one like some bands you can mention ;) Actually, over 12 years in the music business...I salute em.
March 15, 200619 yr Great band, seriously underestimated. Burn baby burn is my favourite track, loads more though.

Not really given us that much?? Okay, maybe not in terms of 'Top 10 chart placings' (which I feel are totally meaningless anyway - it only takes 8000 single sales to get a No1 these days and the singles charts are totally about marketing and nothing to do with music..), but I judge them on the quality of the music, and that has, on the whole, despite my misgivings about the "Free All Angels" era, been of pretty high quality; and unlike, say Oasis, they've not gotten tired or complacent, and still maintained a vitality and credibility in the music as opposed to merely going through the motions. This 'not affecting an American one' you talk of, not referring to the execrable likes of Son of Dork by any chance.....  I too salute them for being in the 'biz' for 12 years, they'll still be around long after the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys are forgotten IMO; in fact, they sound [/i]fresher than most of these bands who've only been doing the rounds a couple of years.....
