Carlisle United have sacked manager Neil McDonald after just one match of the new League One season.

McDonald had taken over at Brunton Park in June 2006 following Paul Simpson's move to Preston, and led the Cumbrians to eighth place last season.

The shock move was revealed in a statement on the club's website.

"The board of Carlisle United regret to say that they have lost confidence in Neil McDonald and are terminating his contract forthwith," it read.

"They thank him for his hard work at the club and wish him all the best for his future career. Greg Abbott has been appointed as caretaker manager."

The dismissal comes just two days after the Cumbrians began the new season with a 1-1 draw at Walsall - having broken their transfer record to sign Blackburn striker Joe Garner for £140,000 on Friday.

Speaking as a Carlisle supporter, it can't be related to results this early in the season. A 1-1 draw is not sackworthy at all and one of the match reports I read described Walsall being up against a slick Carlisle side.

Maybe he criticised the board one too many times? Financial? It is a mystery to me, as I find it hard to follow from East Anglia. Shall look up a few sources to see what I can find.

It has no effect on the transfer of Joe Garner in a further statement from the club.

Source.

Seems a bit strange, why leave it for one game if the board was not happy.

Can imagine a lot of managers moving around this season.

sounds like the manager had a tiff with the board/chairman to me, and there's only ever one winner in that battle

No one seems to believe that it is for footballing reasons according to the sites I have just been on.

If it were footballing reasons, surely the end of last season would have been the best time to sack him? Either that or wait until a few more results had come in this season and if they were poor, sack him.

The unknown "footballing reasons" are not at all credible in my opinion.

How could they sack a manager for footballing reasons when he's just achieved Carlisle's highest league position for years? They not only held their pwn in League 1 last season after two successive promotions, they came close to making the play-offs.
