The judge described The Jeremy Kyle Show as "depressing"

A judge has branded The Jeremy Kyle Show "a form of human bear-baiting" at a court case in Manchester.

District Judge Alan Berg said the ITV1 daytime programme was "trash" and existed to "titillate bored members of the public with nothing better to do".

The judge made the comments while sentencing one of the show's guests, who head-butted his love rival during filming earlier this year, for assault.

He added that the show's makers were partly to blame for the attack.

He added that producers had persisted in contacting David Stainforth from Chesterfield to persuade him to make an appearance on the show.

'Limited intellects'

During a recording on 16 May, Stainforth lashed out at bus driver Larry Mahoney, who had begun an affair with his wife Jennifer after moving into their home as a lodger.

Stainforth told the court he had initially been reluctant to appear on the show, but changed his mind after being told his wife was considering a reconciliation.

In his sentencing, Judge Berg was reported in the Manchester Evening News as saying: "I have had the misfortune, very recently, of watching The Jeremy Kyle Show.

"It seems to me that the purpose of this show is to effect a morbid and depressing display of dysfunctional people whose lives are in turmoil."

He added that it was "human bear-baiting which goes under the guise of entertainment".

"It should not surprise anyone that these people, some of whom have limited intellects, become aggressive with each other.

"This type of incident is exactly what the producers want. These self-righteous individuals should be in the dock with you. They pretend there is some kind of virtue in putting out a show like this," said Judge Berg.

A spokeswoman for ITV said: "We do not recognise the district judge's description of our programme, or his opinion of the viewing public and the people who choose to take part in our programme in an effort to resolve their problems."

haha so true. Jeremy really gets up my nose, there's just something about him. The audiance are all brainwashed-dummies to, clapping when Jeremy delivers an 'amazing-gods-speech', whilst Jeremy rockets of into a rant without listening to both full sides of the story. Tis pathetic.

I was off work sick today and ended up watching it. It's totally OTT, and 99% of the people who come on are un-educted chavs. Anyone who would come on national TV like that in the first place is odd tbh. Although to be fair, it is alot less ridiculous than something like Jerry Springer Show. They actually help people on the Jeremy Kyle show to some extent, whilst the Jerry Springer is just a big circus with loads of freaks and hugely obese women stripping to show off their huge t*ts the whole time.
Haha I love the Jeremy Kyle Show. :( Such entertainment.
The people on this show are the dregs of society, if people like that lived near me i would move

true dat!

Agreed Brian. Also saying they have "limited intellects" is like saying Hitler liked to kill the odd Jew.

I watch it occasionally, but only when there's nothing else on because like Josh said Jeremy can be a bit much at times and the point of the show is to let people explain their problems and then let Jeremy have his say, but I find without even knowing the full story he batters them with all kinds of labels before he's given the full picture. You seem to hear him talk more than the actual guests.

Although, knowing Jeremy he will probably address it on his show, as per usual I expect he will want the last word on this. :heehee:

im guilty of watching it... its on itv2 in the afternoon... I LIKE IT!

its car crash tv, i cant believe where SOME of these morons come from, there are some very genuine people who have had the roughest of starts in life (often sexually abused as kids).

as has been pointed out jk does help people with the 'genius', he sorts out councilling to help people overcome adversity, gets people off drugs, gets the truth out of people, sorts out dna tests, etc....

i can understand why some (awaits scotts reply) would hate this spectacle, but all in all jk champions higher moral standards and responsability amongst those who dont have much. i think its good tv, it confronts real lives and overall for whatever motives, he does good.

The judge is totally spot on, shows like Jeremy Kyle just appeal to the lowest common denominator worst aspects of human nature.. I dont doubt that this form of "human bear baiting" was partly responsible for this particular case... Wasn't there an infamous case in America on one of these "chat shows" when someone found out the "girl" they'd been going out with turned out to be a transexual, and later, the guy actually killed the transexual because he couldn't live with being publically humiliated...?? I seem to remember this... I dont think shows like Jeremy Kyle's really do actually help in the long-run, and this case just proves it to me... Yeh, the people who go on it might be uneducated and ignorant, but Kyle to me is guilty of a worse form of ignorance because he doesn't seem to realise the potential harm his hyped-up "car crash TV" can actually cause.... Hopefully he's gonna learn from this mistake...

I like Jeremy Kyle

He tells it how it is and some people need a good old dose of blunt honesty instead of tea and sympathy

And these people that go on it and get a dressing down from Kyle they haven't been dragged off the street and frogmarched into the studio at gunpoint they VOLUNTEERED to be on the show so they knew when they applied that they may be given some serious home truths

the guy is a moron, and god forbid, any1 who either sits in the audience or goes on the show has to have no intellect never mind two brain cells too rub together

I'm all for a bit of "tough love" and straight talking, but it should be done in the private, more clinical atmosphere of a counsellor's office, a rehab clinic or a psychiatrist's practice, NOT the hyped-up, freak show atmosphere that Kyle generates purely to get ratings... I mean, exactly what training has this guy had to be able to do the things he's doing...? All very well to say that he has these "experts" to back him up, but on the actual show itself, it's just him ranting at people and creating a totally negative atmosphere of bile and hatred.. Hardly good therapy....

Fodder for the masses mate, that's all his show is....

spot on craig! :)

i wonder how many shows the critics here have seen?

these people DO volunteer to be on the show (why i dunno...) and do so to have some problem sorted out. ok, i agree that its not usually for public consumption and should be a private affair, but many times 'doing it themselves' doesnt work. kyle and co DO offer proffessional help and has got loads of addicts off drugs and drink. the price they pay is having their (and our) problems aired in public. i think many people in similar situations can benefit by seeing this played out... they can see that there IS hope, especially kids who were abused and suffered in silence.

kyle takes no c**p off anyone, he will call a person a liar to their face, he will tell them to use contraception, he will tell them to get a job to support their kids, he aint just talking though to the guys on the stage...it applies to all watching.

tv for the masses?... EXACTLY! someone here is tackling real issues that many have on tv and offering a way out. good for him!

So, I would have to sit and watch every single show, and only then I would be qualified to talk about it??? Rubbish.. I dont have to sit through an entire ruddy Paris Hilton album to know that she's a load of c**p.... I've watched a few shows, and they were just terrible, the absolute worst kind of Americanised garbage... Even worse than Trisha or Kilroy sodding Silk, and that's saying summat...

Kyle is a grade-A w/anker, his shows are first and foremost about his own inflated ego, the welfare of the people on it come pretty far down the list....

I'm a huge Jeremy Kyle fan and used to listen to him on Virgin Radio then Capital FM. Never miss it and record it if I've to go out.

nope, not every single show, but you appear to be sounding off on principal more then actually researching it yourself!

ok you think its worthless c**p... i dont, live with it! :P

Tbh, most shows like Jerry Springer, Jeremy Kyle, are a load of 'made-up-tosh' anyway. It's all over-exaggerated, for example, I watched this show once and it showed footage of the stage-director, leading the audiance with dramatic claps (indicating the audiance to cheer), dramatic boo's (giving the audiance signal to boo) etc. It's all stupid.

I have a love/hate relationship with J..

...he gets on my T*TS when he goes off on one and starts screaming and shouting...but sometimes he tells some of the halfwits who go on the programme things they need to hear.

only sometimes?... i think when he 'goes off on one' he is fully justified. i like watching him circle around like a bird of prey, quick witted, intelligent, waiting for the moment when some idiot has put his head in the noose, then jezza hangs them! i also like his compassion towards victims.

I think people who see these shows as entertainment, and love like laughing at other peoples problems and such, are really sick. Some of the shows yeah i may have watched, to do with the Rose West thing (i can't even remember the names, hehe) , but the whole concept of counselling is very good and i'm sure a lot of good comes out from the show.
