The situation in Burma is worsening with the army shooting their citizens for marching for democracy, including the monks. Should the rest of the world stand by and do nothing. The country has been ruled by the military since the 60's, and spends 50% of its GNP on the army although it has no external enemies.

Should the Chinese exert more pressure on its neighbour.

Will sanctions make any difference to the situation.

I've seen the news reports, its beginning to escalate, its about the time the Army was disbanded and a proper government was set up otherwise a lot of innoncent people will get killed, China should take notice

China needs to act.... and soon..... then again, they have their own issues with the monks in Tibet that need resolving first.

I can see the Oympics getting boycotted left, right and centre if they don't move soon.....

The Olympics should not be politicised, if it were then no democracy should take part in the beijing games.

Chinas human rights record is hardly any better than Burmas.

Asean and India should really flex their power in Burma, but then most of Asean is hardly a bastion of freedom, and even though India is a democracy it has its own human rights violation in Assam and Kashmir.

but the monks are budhists arnt they? and they believe in re-incarnation, therefore they aint scared to die!...

international sanctions especially from china would help, but ultimately theres not alot we can legaly do.

there is a lot of natural resources there, but the yanks would be too scared too interfere in a country bordering both China and India, the worlds next two super powers

they've always been politicised, though..... whenever there's trouble - it's always the Olympics that get hit.... Russia/Afghanistan? Munich?

well thats only half true, whilst during the cold war the olympics have been used as a political tool, this hasnt been the case since motreal in 88? certainly by barcelona in 92 and ever since the olympics have been fully reprisented.

I don't disagree that they have been politicised in the past I just don't think they should be. Although I also think China should never have been awarded the games

supposedly the government are covering up the amount of deaths that have occurred in his protest for want of a better word

There was a discussion on the radio this morning about the proposed boycott between Duncan Goodhew and a Tory MEP, Edward McMillan-Scott. The MEP made some good points in favout of a boycott, including the fact that Burma isn't the only nasty regime they support. However, most of his argument was more of an argument for why they shouldn't have been given the Games in the first place.

The boycott of the Moscow Games achieved nothing. A threatened boycott of Beijing would need to be on a massive scale to have a chance of influencing China.

The UK is one of the only countries that has been to every olympic games so the chances of us boycotging are nil I would think
From what I've read, China has a lot of shady business with countries that a lot of other countries won't touch (Burma, Zimbabwe, etc.) China interfering could be a huge economic blow to them. Not that I'm saying what they're doing is justified by any means, but that seems to be the case. -_-

There IS something this country could do actually - stop selling arms to that horrendous regime.... <_< <_<
