Posted September 30, 200717 yr TRUCK drivers last night threatened a fresh wave of fuel protests as new tax rises nudge prices at the pump towards £1 a litre. A 2p-a-litre hike in duty – announced by Gordon Brown in his last Budget – comes into force tomorrow pushing average prices to 97.74p per litre. The AA estimates this will generate more than £1.6million a day for the Chancellor, on top of the £43million per day he already receives in tax on petrol. The first above-inflation increase since the fuel protests of 2000 brought the country to a grinding halt comes as oil prices hit record highs of more than 80 dollars a barrel. The truckers’ first action is now confirmed for a Sunday in the next six weeks with more protests likely to follow. They may also blockade oil plants and fuel depots. The protests could paralyse the nation and cost millions of pounds in lost business. Haulage bosses say the latest increase will cost hauliers hundreds of thousands of pounds and drive some out of business. The tax hike will also force companies to use cheaper hauliers from Europe. October 1, 200717 yr good maybe then the greedy gits will stop making us pay through our nose for petrol i bet gordon doesn't pay any tax. i'd like 2 see what the folk of kircaldy and west fife think of this Of course Gordon Brown pays tax. What a ridiculous statement.
October 1, 200717 yr apparently in 'real' terms (whatever that is) fuel is cheaper then it ever has been! i was under the impression that fuel was supposed to be cheaper in the future (now) after the discovery of north sea oil. expensive fuel will only fuel (sic) inflation as we all need more money to use our vehicle.it wont stop us using our cars. i guess eventually only the rich will be able to drive <_<
October 3, 200717 yr i thought the government was supposed 2 act in our interest? erm.... you can use statistics to prove anything.... so the government will have this on covered m8.
October 16, 200717 yr but it isn't in our interest to push petrol prices towards £1 per litre. its forcing smaller firms out of business, how does this help us or economy?
October 16, 200717 yr I'm in Australia just now and petrol cost $1.25 or so, which is roughly 50-60p a litre, and they are complaining it's too expensive here. The tax on petrol is suppose to be environmental, but I think it is too high, as petrol for many poor people is a nessesity so they can get to work, and many parts of Britain have inadequate public transport so that is not an option, it would be better to increase taxes on petrol guzzling large cars, and increase the road tax for these cars, flat taxes like these don't help the environment they just line the government coffers
October 17, 200717 yr oil is now at an new all time high per barrel, this WILL impact at the pumps very soon, i can see people getting fed up with the over priced, over taxed fuel.
