The actress Lois Maxwell, who played Miss Moneypenny in 14 James Bond films, has died in Australia aged 80.

Canadian-born Maxwell, whose flirtatious but unconsummated relationship with James Bond was a hallmark of the movies, died in Fremantle Hospital in Western Australia late on Saturday.

She starred alongside Sir Sean Connery in the first Bond film, Dr No, in 1962.

She continued playing the role until 1985's A View To A Kill, in which she appeared with Sir Roger Moore.

She moved to Australia in 2001 to be with her son and his family, and lived in the Western Australian capital of Perth.

Asked to nominate her favourite Bond film during an interview in 2005, she came up with the surprise choice of On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

It was the only Bond movie in which Australian George Lazenby played 007.

Asked what he was like to work with, she laughed and said: "Naughty".

She was a longtime friend of Roger Moore and thought Sean Connery's Bond was "marvellous".

Born in Canada, she acted in films alongside Ronald Reagan and James Mason before landing the role of Moneypenny.

Her last film role was in a 2001 thriller, The Fourth Angel.

Awwww! She was a great Moneypenny - played the part subtly and with gravitas and humour.
