IF [and I say IF hypothetically] 'Spirit' manages to sell more than Declinehouse's album this year then it seems safe to say that Leona will have the biggest selling single and album of 2007.

I've just been wondering if that feat has ever been achieved before in a calendar year and if someone could shed some light on it?

From memory, the biggest year end singles and albums this century have been:

2006: Gnarls Barkley - Crazy & Snow Patrol - Eyes Open

2005: Shayne Ward - That's My Goal & James Blunt - Back To Bedlam

2004: Band Aid 20 - Do They Know It's Christmas & Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters

2003: Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love & Dido - Life For Rent

2002: Will Young - Evergreen/Anything Is Possible & Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head (or Robbie Williams - Escapology?)

2001: Shaggy - It Wasn't Me & Dido - No Angel

2000: Bob The Builder - Can We Fix it? & 1 - The Beatles

The Spice Girls were close in 1996 with Wannabe and Spice, but the Fugees single Killing Me Softly just beat Wannabe.

So, not that I remember.

Thanks Matt!

I'm guessing it was probably Coldplay in 2002?

Robson & Jerome did it in 1995. And Meatloaf two years before in 1993.

What odd company she will be in if she does that double.

I wasn't 100% sure, but I think it was them.

Can't have been that year because Will was definitely the biggest single but the album was 20ish for the year.

Oh I remember Tim. Hello again! :D

Hello everyone - I remember you, Matt and Graham too.

Hi Tim,

Welcome back :)

Don't mean to sound picky - but wasn't Amarillo No.1 of the year in 2005? Not Shayne Ward?

Sorry if I sound like I'm being funny, I don't mean too.

I can answer this. It was last done in 1993 by Meat Loaf, I'd Do Anything For Love and parent album Bat Out Of Hell 2.

Yep it was.

Did the Beatles never manage to have the biggest selling single and album some time in the mid 60s? I'd have thought they'd have managed it more than once.

Yes think they did, two or three times and maybe Abba did it in the 70's.

Hmm I don't think Abba ever had a biggest selling single in a year...I seem to recall they were always beaten by some massive song (Bohemian Rhapsody, You're The One That I Want, Don't You Want Me etc.)

ABBA never had The Best Selling Single of The Year in the UK.

The closest they came was 4th in 1976 - 'Dancing Queen', &

4th in 1980 - 'Super Trouper'. (Benny & Bjorn also came close in

1985, when they co-wrote the 2nd Best Seller - 'I Know Him So

Well', by Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson).

1965, 1966, & 1968

Acts to have the No.1 Album of the Year 3, (or more), times.

The Beatles & ABBA are the only Acts to have managed it

than once:,

2001 - 'No Angel'

7) Madonna had the No.1 Album of 1986 - 'True Blue'.

Her next closest was in 1990, when she was 2nd for the Year,

with 'Immaculate Collection'.

Like ABBA, she has never had the No.1 Single of the Year.

Her best shot at it was in 1985 - 3rd for the Year, with,

'Into The Groove'.
