Posted December 29, 200717 yr Very sad news. Phil O'Donnell, age 35 collapsed during match today and has died in hospital. :(
December 29, 200717 yr This is shocking and tragic and just very sad. This has also happend more than once this year, and it is a great shame.
December 29, 200717 yr Bloody hell First Puerta and now this guy and that Leicester player having a heart attack a while back How comes these players don't get better medical checks ? someone that age to die must have had a heart defect so how was it not shown up in his signing medical or future checks etc RIP
December 29, 200717 yr This is truly tragic & shocking. RIP. Is it my imagination or are more players dying on the pitch due to the ever faster pace & strain put on the players in modern football?
December 29, 200717 yr Dreadful news. Unfortunately medical checks cannot always predict whether someone is susceptible to this. Players will have to undergo pretty thorough medical checks - the insurance companies will insist on it.
December 29, 200717 yr Heard this today, huge shock, real shame as the team were doing so well, I wonder if the team will keep going for success as I'm sure he would want them too. RIP
December 30, 200717 yr How comes these players don't get better medical checks ? someone that age to die must have had a heart defect so how was it not shown up in his signing medical or future checks etc I don't think Marc-Vivien Foe's medical at Man City* showed he had a heart defect, and he was 28 when he died. * - I know it was a loan deal, but I doubt a player wouldn't have a medical before joining on a season-long loan. Edit - I didn't know he wasn't the second person to die whilst playing football: a Zambian player called Chaswe Nsofwa died in a practice match in Israel back in August. January 2, 200817 yr The SPL have no respect at all and you can clearly see that they show favouriteism (sp?) They've allowed Rangers and Celtic's Old Firm derby to be called off as a mark of respect but non of the other games? Is just a joke...
January 2, 200817 yr But he was a former Celtic player... Not played for any of the other 10 SPL clubs.
January 2, 200817 yr I thought 3 games got called off in the SPL and 3 are still on? Or maybe im wrong
January 2, 200817 yr But he was a former Celtic player... Not played for any of the other 10 SPL clubs. That's true, but it doesn't mean none of the other players that play for other clubs were affected by his death does it?
January 2, 200817 yr I thought 3 games got called off in the SPL and 3 are still on? Or maybe im wrong  This is correct. Gams involving Motherwell (for obvious reasons), Celtic (his former club) and Gretna (they share Fir Park with Motherwell) have been postponed.
January 2, 200817 yr Author Dundee United asked for a postponement of their game today because Phil O'Donnell collapsed and died on the pitch amongst their players on Saturday. They said a lot of their players were still very traumatised by it all. The SPL said no to Dundee Uniteds request for a postponement even though their opponents today (Hearts) were quite happy to postpone. I'd have thought Dundee United had equal (if not more) grounds to request a postponement than Celtic. But there you go.
