And before the first new chart which will appear at the weekend a few links and some background information The Irish chart is revealed online every Friday afternoon and covers sales between Friday and Thursday. Since the beginning of 2007 the main sales chart has included all physical and download sales as in the UK. The main charts are the singles chart (a Top 50), the artist albums chart (a Top 100), the compilation album chart (a Top 30) and the download-only chart (a Top 20). The first 3 of these can be found at www.irma.ie while www.chart-track.com carries the Top 50 singles, Top 75 Artist albums, Top 20 compilations and Top 20 downloads along with weekly commentaries. The weekly airplay Top 20 can be found at http://cclamp.radioandrecords.com/formats/...uro/Ireland.asp At present the first and only broadcast of the chart on radio is on Sunday afternoons. Veteran presenter Larry Gogan has a 3 hour show between 2 and 5 and the middle hour is dedicated to the new chart. It usually kicks off with tracks from the top selling compilation and artist albums, then a couple of tracks from other album entries or something from the lower end of the singles chart with the Top 10 played in order - though not necessarily in full. The show can be heard online at http://www.rte.ie/radio/liveplayer_av.html...st/2fm_new.smil For full archive charts from January 2000 onwards I would recommend the chart-track website as it contains all the weekly charts since then. The irma website seems to have added an archive section which can be found at http://www.irma.ie/charts_archive/overview.asp though this only seems to cover the Top 50 singles and artist albums of 2007 at present. The irma site also contains year end Top 20s for the last 5 years. Also worth checking out is www.irishcharts.ie which contains a fully searchable singles database going right back to 1962 when the first recognised chart was compiled (though there was a Top 10 published regularly from 1959). It is restricted to Top 30 hits but seems to be updated on a regular basis. This site also contains various other facts and figures and does have a certifications section though this is rather limited in content. Sales info is extremely hard to come by for Ireland and the only details that seem to appear are those mentioned from time to time in the chart-track commentary. Many pre-2000 singles charts were posted on the UKMix forums back in 2006. This week ‘In Rainbows’ matches the No1 chart debut of the previous four albums, despite the fact that it was available as a ‘pay as you please’ download ahead of this week’s physical release. Garth Brooks is denied a sixth Irish No1 album by a margin of just 18 sales, climbing from No5 to No2 with ‘The Ultimate Hits’. His previous chart-topper was ‘The Life Of Chris Gaines’ back in October 1999, and prior to that his ‘Hits’ compilation spent nine weeks at the top between December 1994 and April 1995. The first Singles Chart of the New Year sees Leon Jackson holding at the top for a third week with ‘When You Believe’, outselling nearest rival Timbaland by more than 2:1. Soulja Boy Tellem climbs for a fifth consecutive week with ‘Crank That’ up from No6 to No3, one place ahead of Britney Spears ‘Piece Of Me’ which jumps from No9 to No4. Several of last year’s top-selling downloads mount a resurgence this week, with Journey ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ up from No14 to No6, Rihanna ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ up from No20 to No10 and Mundy & Sharon Shannon ‘Galway Girl’ up from No41 to No13 – one of just three singles by Irish artists in this week’s Top 30. Shakyfan's Commentary Some interesting climbs on the singles chart partcularly Mundy & Sharon Shannon which climbs from 41 to equal its previous peak of 13.... on its 30th week in the Top 50. Three weeks after his death Christie Hennessy crashes back into the album chart at 21 though a similar compilation had been in the lower end of the Top 100 (at 83 and 88) over the last couple of weeks. There are 3 albums by Joe Dolan entering this week. Joe who was enjoying a number 1 single with Dustin the Turkey this time 10 years ago, died suddenly on Boxing Day. Finally a sharp drop out of the singles chart for one of the most bizarre hits of 2007. Brendan Grace's Safe Cross Code entered at 22, climbed to 7, then 6 before dropping back to 22 last week.

After a relatively slow start, the album entered the Top 20 in the first week of 2007 and remained in the Top 30 for the entire year – and was the second best selling album of 2007 in Ireland (behind Leona Lewis ‘Spirit’). In an all-female Top 3, Rihanna climbs from No5 to No2 with ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’, another of last year’s top-sellers which debuted at No3 on release in June 2006, rose to No1 for one week and has resided in the Top 30 ever since. In third place, Britney Spears’ ‘Blackout’ climbs from No6 to return to the Top 3 after a nine week break, having debuted at No1 on release in November. In the same week that his album makes it to No1, Tom Baxter gets his first Top 10 single in Ireland with ‘Better’, climbing from No12 to No10. Michael Jackson returns to the Top 10 with ‘Thriller’ at No5 – re-released as a special 25th anniversary CD/DVD pack. Originally released in November 1982, the album went on to sell more than 100 million copies worldwide and still holds the record as the best-selling album ever. Morrissey has the next new entry at No19 with his ‘Greatest Hits’ collection, a significant improvement on his previous solo compilation ‘Suedehead: The Best Of’ which reached No55 in September 1997. Basshunter clocks up a fourth week at No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘Now You’re Gone’ (feat. DJ Mental Theo’s Bazzheadz), ahead of Nickelback’s ‘Rockstar’ which holds at No2 for a third week. After their successful Timbaland collaboration ‘Apologize’ (still at No18 after 19 weeks in the Top 40), OneRepublic get their first solo hit with ‘Stop And Stare’ at No9 - the highest of three new entries in this week’s Top 20. Welsh newcomer Duffy’s debut release ‘Mercy’ comes in at No11, ahead of Joe Dolan who has posthumous success with ‘Let There Be Love’ new at No12. Shakyfan's Commentary Thriller is being treated as a reissue in Ireland, presumably sales of both versions are being put together as seemed to happen with the 20th anniversary edition of "The Joshua Tree" last year. Basshunter’s ‘Now You’re Gone’ holds at No1 on the Singles Chart for a fifth week, but Duffy mounts a strong challenge, leaping from No11 to No2 on downloads of ‘Mercy’, with the CD due for release today (Friday 22nd Feb). Basshunter’s label-mate H ‘Two’ O has this week’s highest new entry at No9 with ‘What’s It Gonna Be’ (feat. Platnum), giving Hard2Beat a 100% Top 10 hit-rate with their first two releases. Kylie has the highest climber this week with ‘Wow’, up 10 places from No20 to No10 - her 25th Top 10 single in Ireland over the space of 20 years.
