Just one place above Alexandra but with a much longer chart run - 73 weeks!

1 Sharon Shannon & Mundy - Galway Girl 49 50 48 39 27 27 24 27 15 13 15 17 17 20 29 28 19 24 30 28 39 34 39 41 48 36 40 49 x 41 13 8 13 14 18 25 29 23 29 29 14 2 5 5 1 1 1 1 1 7 9 10 19 18 18 26 21 22 19 19 24 22 24 21 25 24 20 21 31 43 42 44 x 43 x 49

Thanks Shaky. I think Galway Girl should have been bigger over here. It was a shame. And thanks for all the Irish News in 2008, too. We look forward to the year ahead.

I'll be back tomorrow evening with the latest chart on the new 2009 thread and any further year end info will be posted here along with the usual lists of all the chart hits of the year.

Yes! Brilliant :dance:

Galway Girl is a credit to the nation of Ireland. I'm very proud to be half-Irish right now :)

Low excepted, this is a great chart! Much better than the UK one. Thanks for all your work Shaky, and looking forward to the new chart.

Maybe because it's only been out about a month and sales are lower there (at a guess?)

Looking at it, maybe the chart is based on points not sales.

Well Larry Gogan said a few times that they were counting down the biggest selling singles of the year! I'll be doing a points based chart at the weekend so it will be interesting to compare them!

I remember listening to a year end chart on NI's Downtown radio one year in the late 80s. I had the weekly charts written out and decided to add a column for peak positions. It was only when I started to fill it in that I realised that the songs were ranked by peak position and then separated by weeks at no 1, weeks at no 2 etc;

LOL! :lol: That sounds kind of lame, but I bet it was full of great songs. That said, the Irish chart was weird in the 80s and 90s, songs that peaked in the 40s and 50s in the UK by British and European acts often charted top 20 in Ireland. I heard this was something to do with chart compilation methods. Do you know anything about that? And is there a list of biggest selling records in Ireland ever anywhere?

I believe that up until possibly 1992 (when Gallup started compiling the chart) it was actually based on orders from shops rather than what they actually sold.

An all-time best sellers list would be difficult to compile as IRMA don't appear to have any records prior to the 90s - for example when Born In The USA (re-)entered the album chart a couple of years ago they had its weeks on chart total as 1 as on their records it had never previously charted. There is a list of more recent big sellers on the Chart-Track website - should be a link at the start of this thread

Thanks for the info. Will check that out.
