And I'm shocked but also pleased Basshunter are gonna top the chart :D It wouldn't normally be my thing but I heard it over the New Year and think it's great.

I must say I'm gutted about Bodyrox/Luciana, I think that's a smashing track and definitely up to the standards of 'Yeah Yeah'. :(

Quite pleased for Britters but would have preferred higher. :( Still I guess the album is doing better than it was so it's not an entire disaster.

fingers crossed that Be Mine! will make top 10 next week...

 

looks as if the album's finally heading the same way too :) now all she needs is to win 'best international female' at the Brits (which she was in 2007) and watch her sales fly up!

Oooosh and I just noticed Plain White T's have made the top 75 with 'Hate'. :cheer:

 

I hope it can climb into the top 40 though that's probably expecting too much.

Unfortunately the run of Top 10 singles has been broken unless you start adding in various "clauses" to the record....ie, they must have had a physical release etc....

Nevertheless it is a testament to the band that they have a strong enough fanbase to chart an album cut/download only single with little publicity.

It will be very difficult for ANY band to have an "unbroken" run of top 10/20 chart hits now because if a band/singer is popular enough to have one of these "runs" of hits, they will undoubtedly place album tracks in the chart when a new album is released (see Mika, Arctic Monkeys, Westlife etc...)

Its gona be so hard for any act to get 17 consecutive top tens now as you kinda have to sacrifice your earlier songs doing blah and not selling the album for enough people to not have the 4th, 5th singles already.

 

The sugababes couldn't even get their second song from an album in the top 10 and after two no 1's, take that got to no 18 with their third song. The less said about Nelly's 'do it', the better too.

Well I for one haven't counted this St Trinian's song as a proper release by Girls Aloud because really it's not I don't think. There's a video etc but it's not like they've promoted it or anything nor is it on their current album. So they've still had 17 top ten singles imo. :heehee:

Well, we could count it as 18 consecutive hits in the top10, but not as 18 consecutive singles in the top10.

And anyway, if from now on every album track is counted as a single when it charts, then I can't see any act achieving a run of 17 consecutive top10 single, just look at Leona, her run would already be broken if we count the album track :lol:

So their record is safe for such a looong time :P

Wait a minute...don't Westlife have more consecutive top 10 singles than Girls Aloud? I just just looking at them on polyhex to check what their record was before " I'm Already There" broke their run and it looks like they have 22 consecutive top 5 and therefore top 10 singles.

But since the 1st January 2007, the Top 75 has been a "song" chart, not a singles chart anymore. It's not a question of us "grasping" it, thats just the way it is now. The point we are discussing here is whether Guinness will count the song or not.

Anyway, surely the definition of "single" is a "single track"....whatever medium it is released on.

 

Guinness are hardly likely to exclude all songs that did not have a physical release from their records as they would end up with Top 75 charts each week with about 10 places excluded.

 

Your point is true that Girls Aloud have not ruined their run of "physical singles" but the physical single is becoming less and less relevant now and future records may not even have a footnote to acknowledge physical release.

 

This situation has occured in the past, although on a massively reduced scale with "import only" singles and (in the case of the Beatles) old songs resurfacing and being released without their express permission, all combining to ruin record breaking runs, so don't feel too bad :)

Oh this is getting boring now.

 

I know physicals are dropping but singles are still released on downloads thats why you get new remixes and b-sides to download aswell so in effect its still a single.

I like to correct you on this, anything that charts in the top 75 will be in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles, even Downloads that enter the chart, we should get a new book this year hopefully if the book gets a new sponser.

 

It just have a little symbol by the track saying it was available as a download only.

 

Anyway this can be discussed as another chart topic, not in here, let's keep it on track, otherwise it be a hard chore for everyone to read all the mish-mash.
