In short BRING BACK MARK GOODYEAR, or at the very least someone who seems to care about what they are playing, not some "DJ" massaging their own ego, promoting their role on ITV2 XFactor and bigging up anyone related to the show (ie. Leon Jackson, Shayne Ward, Westlife) when it is the musical equivalent of a turd sandwich. In the last six months the fastest growing Radio show in the country is Radio 2's Radcliffe & Maconie show every 8PM - 10PM Monday to Thursday. The reason why is that they are music lovers bordering on anorak status, who know what they are talking about, having great live musical guests (last week Goldfrapp, British Sea Power; next week Supergrass), whom play great music over a large variety of ages and genres. Take their show last Monday, could you ever imagine a Radio 1 DJ play Those Dancing Days, David Bowie, Goldfrapp (A&E as their Record of The Week), Cliff Richard, Amy MacDonald, Cream, Sheryl Crow, Kings Of Leon, John Lennon, British Sea Power, Pulp, Bruce Springsteen, Rilo Kiley, etc in the same show? It's not rocket science, yet "One FM" seem incapable of understanding that concept.
January 11, 200817 yr I no longer like Radio 1. Such a shame as it had been part of my life for ages. That's the reason I don't listen - not lack of interest in the chart.

January 11, 200817 yr The only people to blame for the decline of the Radio 1 chart show are Radio 1. The chart hasn't been destroyed - the chart show has!
January 11, 200817 yr Author The only people to blame for the decline of the Radio 1 chart show are Radio 1. The chart hasn't been destroyed - the chart show has! well i think there are two trains of thought going on here - the radio 1 chart show is poor because of marketing / producer mistakes/mismanagement and thats causing them not to get the reach across the auds that they want - the chart itself is the problem because its boring - is all radio & tv airply / programming disistions too staid too boring??
January 11, 200817 yr The Internet has not destroyed the top 40, Radio One have done that on their own, since 2003! All radio one, have done since 1984, is copy ideas brought in by Independant Radio. They copied Kid Jensen, in 1984, by running down the last ten songs, before the top 30, top 20, and top 10...Independant Radio`s idea. The Network Chart played the chart on a Sunday as new by MRIB. Radio One, then entered into talks to get the Gallup chart, new on Sundays. The Network Chart, played the whole top 30 every week, with 3 bubblers/new releases featured. Radio One launched Chartbusters to play guess what...new releases! Then in 1991, like the Network Chart, they decided to play the full top 40! Independant Radio, introduced Neil Fox, and the Pepsi Chart in Aug 1993, with competitions etc...surprise, surprise Radio One started having competitions. The Pepsi Chart have guests talking about their hits...Radio One copied again! Then the Pepsi Chart became Hit40uk, interactive with the listener...Radio One copied again! The Pepsi Chart filled up with even more chart chat...Radio One copied again, by missing out half the chart!! The Pepsi Chart was the first chart show to have 2 presenters together...Radio One copied yet again! Maybe they might catch on, that Hit40uk, has now stopped chatting so much, not running many comps, and playing the chart (yes) in full!! Edited January 11, 200817 yr by trevs

January 11, 200817 yr to be honest it is both the radio stations and the music buying public - without radio stations we wouldnt hear the songs as much but radios need to broaden their ranges of songs not just stick to lists and play the same thing over and over again, and give other acts from all diffrent generes a chance - but the charts are so static aswell due to the record buying or not buying public, if people keep buying the same song then the charts are going to be static, if record buying public dont like a song it doesnt chart and doesnt have longevity - but on the flip side the public are near on forced to listen to what radio stations provide for them so both play a part in the static charts at the moment
January 11, 200817 yr but in the charts week to week are v static - they cant be blamed for 43 weeks of the fray - only the programming. Oh yes they can if they keep these songs on their playlist, and play them on their chart show, yet do not play in ull some new entry, because it does not match the criteria of "their audience demographic". Example Radio 1 still play Pigeon Detectives I Found Out which was released in November 2007, and never reached the UK Top40, yet they still play that track regularly. I'm sorry but if my Personal Chart Top40 can have 22 new entries in the last weeks because there is a lot of great new music around, then why can't Radio 1 find it? Answer: because they have clueless morons in charge of their playlist who thought the Pogues Fairytale Of New York was offensive, when happily A Listing Soulja Boy utterly offensive song on misogynistic sexual practises to a female while asleep for the sixth week running.
January 11, 200817 yr but in the charts week to week are v static - they cant be blamed for 43 weeks of the fray - only the programming. Only the people that listen or buy the trash, in the first place are to blame. Radio one returned to be the top chart show in 2004, not because it was the best one..but because various radio groups, started their own shows..the Smash Hits Chart ran on Emap stations, the A list turned up elswhere, and Hit40uk launched. Airplay, is to blame for a lot, biased stations Radio One, Capital etc...ageist stations (the lot of them)..won`t play Status Quo, Cliff, or whoever! Every song in the top 200, should be on all stations playlists, then the biased c**p, that appears week after week, would not happen, at all! The chart would reflect a vast amount of age groups different tastes...there`s the problem! If Radio one`s audience fell to an all time low, something might be done! January 11, 200817 yr I think its about time Radio 1 lost the rights to transmit the official chart, we get tweedledee and tweedledum to present the chart aka JK and Jerk and now we have dumb and dumber aka Fearne & Reggie. I bet Radio 2 can do a better job presenting the show instead of dumb and dumber. Yeah I know its a britsh institution that Radio 1 have presented the chart for ages but OCC have to realise there are other radio stations that can present the official chart show in a better format, there is Capital Radio, Radio 2, and so many more, why are OCC contracted to Radio 1. Its about time to give the chart show to someone else. So if OCC are reading this thread, open your eyes and give the official chart to another Radio station. On a sidenote, you also have to blame the public for downloading the stupid c**p song for the past 18 weeks plus for example Scouting For Girls -She's So Lovely and many others Umbrella etc etc etc, I'm not getting at Rihanna 's fans here, come on, would you keep the bloody same single in the charts for 30 weeks plus. Stop downloading the c**p songs again and again, its getting old we don't want to hear it every week. For once listen to decent music. Its getting repetitive. There goes my rant. Sorry its long winded, I just had to get that off my bloody CHEST :D

Radio 2 is full of egos, and so called stars. Capital have their heads, in the clouds..Johnny Vaughn, the dreaded Lucio etc. You are right about over downloading the same tracks...I thoroughly believe, the same people download the same track every week, to keep it up there, it`s a farce all right. The truth about radio today is, you will struggle to find a decent station. I slipped into local radio in the early 90s, it began to slide shortly after (hopefully not my thought)!!! But then Local stations used to be virtually able, to play what the people wanted...Then these playlists, of overplayed material turned up...producers saying we want you to plug this, radio bosses, telling you what to say, even scripting shows. I got out of Local radio in 2004. All I do now is a bit of Hospital radio, now and then...where the people are always first, because they only can be.
January 11, 200817 yr Without the internet, an amazing band like Foals would not have done as well, so I doubt it's destroying it at all.
January 11, 200817 yr All it needs is 1 person to do the chart show you don't need dumb and dumber to do the mathematics 2+2=5, probably a trained monkey can present a chart show just tell it what to do  I bet in 10 months time dumb and dumber will get kicked off when their contract is up for review in October. People don't want to hear the chit chat, how hard can it be for 2 djs to do their homework first and research the artist before going on air, instead of giving false information. And I could have swore Reggie said last week Kate Nash - Foundations was a #1 hit, when it peaked at #2. If he did his research properly that wouldn't have happened. On another sidenote, I actually send an email to the producer Stuart Last of the Radio 1 chart show, regarding the format of the new show was dire, that was October/ early November, I still haven't got a reply to this date, how rude.
January 11, 200817 yr The fundamental purpose of The Top 40 is to represent popular music taste as accurately and as up to date as is possible. With 75% (or something like that) of singles now being purchased over the internet, it cannot not contribute to the charts. I haven't listened to a top 40 count down out-right for absolutely YEARS! I would have to hop back to the previoius decade, infact. I find the charts boring, slow and generally full of rubbish. But if I was 10 years of age, I would think they were great - like I did back in 93/94 (when I was that age). I like it when a track I like does well (being honest, it very rarely happens). The days of such a track falling and climbing so many places are so long gone now purely due to the nature of how the charts move. Hence why the inserts needs to be clogged up tittle tattle and the usual rubbish that can be obtained in Reveal. The Top 40 will continue to be a marketing nightmare for Radio 1. The average Joe Bloggs listens to commercial radio which predominantly plays well-established singles that have already proved themselves, chartwise. The only difference now, unlike many years ago, the consumer has automatic access to these 'old' tracks and therefore seem to hang around the lower end of the charts like a dead weight. This also puts a new barrier on breakthrough artists (dance music seems to have been most effected, as per bloody usual) on obtaining decent chart placings. The chart doesn't really hold any significance to me - and hasn't done for time. Edited January 11, 200817 yr by ScottyEm

Downloads are the work of the devil, they screwed the chart up since the Jan 2007 rule change. The singles charts have been sh*t more than ever, they mean nothing to me now, and people who think they are the be all or end all of of an artists carrer are thick. I agree with the idea of the chart representing what people are buying, and not what people are buying that is allowed to chart, but it's getting just stupid that all these old tracks bounce back, or 2 year old songs such as "Chasing Overplay" refusing to bud off is just not needed. They should call it the tracks chart now.

It was slightly better. If people want to download old songs, then they should be disqualified, if there is no physical single version available, and that goes for album tracks, as well.
