That was a really interesting video and makes me want an official memoir from her so bad.

IIRC, that fan (with the fake tan) wasn't mentioned at all on yesterday's Q&A, so I think it's safe for you to watch. ;)

Thank you! I might watch it later!

And you will endure it like a good Spice Bitch :whip:

But she's released so much stuff and 90% of it is shite music and I will loose interest pretty quickly lol

Yesterday's Q&A was so good! She revealed so much stuff. In addition, she talked about the leak of the cover of the new single and how much it hurt her.

Another interesting Q&A. Last one for a while, apparently. This was an emotional one, and you could tell there is a lot going on in her mind at the moment. Certainly being stuck at home, not able to promote and having stuff leaked recently has rattled her quite a lot.

A round-up:

- She asked very strongly for us not to share the art work or details of the single before official announcement. I got the impression she was very angry and fearful that the song will leak...

- Quite emotional moment when she is re-calling being in LA during recording sessions for Northern Star and that she made really strong friendships there, and felt like she really needed that moment in her life, allowed her to comfront some of her fears, etc. Apparently a friend from that time that she was still close to, has passed and it made her cry. I felt very sorry for her, I hope she is ok.

- After the success of NS, there was a plan to do a second album with the iconic Markus DeVries who also worked on NS and both of them were quite up for it, but eventually the record was a mix bag like NS, and she was wondering how life would have maybe turned out differently for her if that would have happened.

- You can tell she was very angry with Virgin after Reason flopped and being dumped. So she decided to go on her own and set up her own lable.

- This Time was a rushed album, that Warner Music Germany demanded as they wanted to capitalise on First Day Of My Life success. She said it feels less personal to her, though she enjoys the songs.

- She was visibly upset that Think About It didnt do well as she could.

- She listed a lot of the places in the world she has performed in and it was quite amazing. She wants to do more in Africa.

- It seems like she has distribution deals with this new album. So she fronts the production costs and the labels front the distribution of the music. I think this is a great move, similar to what she has done in the past with Warner, etc. It will front her a bit more visibility, I hope. Certainly her last two tracks seemed to have great exposure.

- She touched again on the whole new team scenario. She needed a fresh start and had felt like she was kind of stuck in the same place for a long time. So she wanted to experiment with new sound, new band, new management, etc. From her comments on this, on Virgin and on the unreleased tracks, I get the sense that she is an all or nothing type of person, which can be cool as she will obviously do her best, but also can be quite frustrating I guess ahah

- She really loved the process of making Beautiful Intentions as before she recorded the songs, she set out to do a small tour on the Barfly clubs across the UK, to test the songs first in front of a live crowd. I think she should do this more often!!

- She liked some of Reason and some of This Time

- The Sea and Northern Star are clearly her favourites, but Version of Me is also up there. The new album is probably gonna be up there too!

- She clearly hated WOMAN lol She was cringing about some of the writing on Spice Girls lyrics (which I find a bit rich coming from Ms 'I will be your concubine' and 'I couldnt live without my phone' Chisholm lol) and she remembered the 'G-string' lyric in WOMAN and you could just tell she is embarrassed by it. Honestly, I have lost hope that they will ever release the demo, even on an Anthology, following from her comments across these sessions.

Shame she is stopping the q&a did she give a reason?

Thank you these are really helpful for me as I cannot follow the live streams due to my deafness so really appreciate this

The bit about you get the sense she is an all or nothing person I think is really obvious by her Spice Girl commitments, when she agrees to do something she gives it everything otherwise she just won't do it, I think it's part of her perfectionist nature.

of course babe, I thought of your access requirements and its what made me do it. I will aim to continue where possible. Also happy for you to send me stuff and I can make round up notes ^_^

Yeah I agree. Shame she doesnt always apply that to her solo music though :teresa: Some of the shite she has released, and has the gal to say that about SG music LOL

And I was just about to say how lovely you are... then you ruined it :arrr: Still can't believe you don't rate Think About It

If I ever watch the videos I get my husband to sit there and listen and pause it every 10 seconds saying "what did she say?" It does his head in

It's not my fault that Mel C has released to much bad music lol It's the same with all of them tbh.

Bunton is my absolute favourite solo Spice but even she has released some tripe over the years (most of AGLM and MHP).

Im just so brutally honest

Love that gif

Plus you forgot Crickets sing :puke2:

Thank you for that summary, Mr.X! Always appreciated!

Some interesting insights there. It seems there's a lot of aspects to her solo career that aggravate her, particularly commercially speaking. I think it might serve her well to try and stop dwelling on the past (as much as it's interesting for fans) because obviously what has happened can't be changed. I know that's easier said than done though, and I'm incredibly guilty of it myself (as the rest of this post will prove, lmao).

I don't really appreciate her attitude towards unreleased Spice Girls songs. :( I wish she would embrace them as a piece of their history, a moment in time when at one point they clearly thought WOMAN was good enough to perform in front of tens of thousands of people. An interesting thing I read re: WOMAN the other day, is that Emma mentioned the track in an interview in July 2000:

Tuesday, July 4th, 2000

Emma commented on the track "Woman" on the upcoming Spice Girls album. Emma said:

"Woman is really different to most of the things that we've done. I think that naturally we're all growing musically and individually as well."

http://www.spicenews.com/html/album3.html

^ That entire page is really interesting by the way. Some of it is false rumours, but there's some interesting quotes and information to be found!

July 2000 is the month they really began to put their energies into Forever - they filmed the two music videos and did the album photoshoot (if I'm not mistaken). If WOMAN was still on Emma's mind then, to the extent that she talked positively about it in an interview, it seems like they might have still been considering using it? I truly wish they had just thrown it on Holler as a B Side, then we could have avoided over 20 years of wondering about it.

Do I even like WOMAN (live version)? Admittedly I'm not wild about it, I've probably heard it less than 10 times in my life  Nevertheless it would be interesting to hear it, even as a demo. I wish Melanie C was more able to put herself into the shoes of fans.

Melanie C has displayed some really questionable taste in music over the years tbh. Cosmic Shower is probably one of the worst recorded songs in music history?! That'll forever be a part of her discography. Yet she dismisses some unreleased Spice Girls songs... hmm. x

Oh, and this was mentioned on Popjustice: "Melanie C was just asked about vinyls... She said having Northern Star on vinyl would be a 'fun' thing to do... but she didn't seemed excited about it." It's a shame she isn't more excited about the possibility of issuing her back catalogue on vinyl. If there's ever a time to do it, it would have been within the past 3 years or so. The 20th anniversary was the perfect opportunity for a Northern Star vinyl, but of course we didn't get one.

Tbh they're all a bit frustrating in regards to releases, I won't centre the blame purely at Melanie C. WOMAN obviously doesn't involve Geri, but she's a bit strange about her own back catalogue too, i.e. blocking a reissue of Schizophonic (not to mention spending a lot of the 2010s recording music that she ultimately never released, lol). Clearly Victoria couldn't care less either, if she did then she would at least have This Groove and Let Your Head Go commercially available (she has the rights to these songs, apparently).

In the 90s, it was great that the Spice Girls had so much control and say in their own music, their business endeavours etc. Clearly it's a double-edged sword situation though, because it's lead to them blocking the sort of releases that are commonplace with pretty much every other major group in music history. ABBA fans are certainly treated to a non-stop deluge of reissues and special releases.
