This is such a great interview :cheer: It's great to finally see her being interviewed by Zane. He is a music interviews GIANT and very well respected, with the mainstream artists like Ariana and alike always giving him/Apple priority for the main interviews for the launch of their albums.

Also, he always goes deeeep and knows what he is talking about!

I really enjoyed the interview. I actually think he made some minor errors, although i am a fan.

Goodbye at the time was not a song about leaving the industry.

Interesting he thought 2 Become 1 was seen as their first credible song.

He didnt say any of those things. Goodbye, even if the song itself was about Geri and not about the end of the band, *was* perceived to be about their end by the public and the press. And yes, it was a signal that things were coming to an end, as Mel C also suggests here. Personally it always bugged me a bit that a group so tarnished with break up rumours would release a song called 'Goodbye' at that stage when everyone expected them to quit (which they did ah)

What he says about 2 Become 1 is how the song has cross-appeal across all demographics. Like, Wannabe was very pop and Say You'll Be There was a more grown up pop/r'n'b, whilst 2B1 managed to be both that and also appeal to rock and more indie fans.

Yes he did say those things.

And at the time of Goodbye as i pointed out the girls were still an ambitious 4 piece.

I am not talking about reflections. We know Geri leaving is NOW seen as the beginning of the end but it wasn't at the time seen like that !

And he implied what you say about 2 become 1 , however the girls have always commented that SYBT was recognised as a more credible song and Melanie could have said that. It is not regarded as 'bubblegum pop'.

I agree with vibe, the impression of 'Goodbye' representing the beginning of the end (for Melanie C and whoever else) is more of an "in hindsight" thing... at the time of its release it was very much business as usual, even though 1999 ended up being a quieter year... but it wasn't the end. They constantly mentioned a third album, and of course it eventually materialised, 2 years after Goodbye. Zane made it come across like Goodbye represented the very end of the Spice Girls!

Well yes, you have to look at it with hindsight, not just what was marketed or promoted at the time. Whilst they kept talking about a new era, we can now look back and reflect on how even though they had the intentions to continue and talked about it publicly, it was clearly going downhill.

Furthermore, both the public AND the press framed Goodbye as the end. And we now know that even internally things were changing a lot and eventually dwindled and yes, it was kind of the beginning of the end. That is what they are saying and it makes total sense to me.

The beginning of the end was Mel C's solo career taking off.

This is very true :arrr:

I mean it was one of those perfect storm things, Mel C in late 98 and early 99 was I'm sure wanting to be a spice girl. She recorded Christmas wrapping and Strongest suit, if the 2 girls weren't pregnant I'm sure Mel C wouldn't have gone down the path she did or at least so early.

It's all water under the bridge now and I doubt there would ever be anything Spice Girls now that Mel C wasn't completely involved in. I'd actually say of the 5 she is probably the most disappointed the tour ended after those 13 dates. She loves performing and she loves her solo career but performing in front of 70k people will trump everything I'm sure especially now she has tasted that sort of high and thrill as a mature woman. I bet she can barely remember Wembley 98 but Wembley 19 will be imprinted on her forever and I'm sure she appreciated and took it all in much more now.

Is anyone following the game?

I use apple music so i am not.

It does seem a bit meh tho.
