All change at the top of both charts courtesy of Basshunter and Amy MacDonald

After three weeks at No.1, Leon Jackson’s debut single When You Believe has continued the X Factor curse of falling steeply from No.1. Shayne Ward fell from No.1 to No.5 in early 2006 while Leona Lewis moved from No.1 to No.6 in early 2007. Both of these songs did of course have four weeks at the top in comparison to Leon’s three.

In a surprising week on the UK chart, Swedish DJ Basshunter has jumped from No.14 to No.1 with Now You’re Gone. The last song to make the same climb to the top was Eye Level by Simon Park way back in 1973. Basshunter’s song, which was originally called Boten Anna, was a huge hit all over Europe in 2006, particularly in Scandanavia. The song has been changed into English and the tempo slightly increased and is the first release from new Ministry Of Sound offshoot label Hard2Beat. He follows in the footsteps of Robyn, Abba, Eric Prydz and Ace Of Base, the other Swedish acts to have scored UK No.1 singles. It is the first No.1 single since Sugababes’ About You Now to climb from outside the top ten to the top of the chart, though it is worth bearing in mind that Sugababes only made the top 40 in the first place thanks to a remix before the radio edit boosted it to No.1.

Making an even more impressive climb up the chart to No.2 is Britney Spears. The American superstar has fallen on troubled times recently and is rarely out of the newspapers but this does not appear to have done her music career any harm and this is her biggest hit in the UK since 2004’s Everytime and her 18th top ten hit to date. The song made its first appearance in the top 40 last week at No.19 and this week soars to No.2 after a physical release, though even without a physical release it would have almost certainly jumped into the top 5 last week as a result of its increasing exposure at the moment.

Soulja Boy’s huge selling US No.1 Crank That continues to do well in the UK too with the song sliding just a place to No.3 on its sixth week in the top 10. After moving 25-15-8 in the last three weeks, Nickelback’s Rockstar continues its upwards progress and this week reaches No.4. This matches the peak of their 2002 debut hit and biggest selling single How You Remind Me and also Chad Kroeger’s Spider-Man theme tune Hero which peaked at No.4 in the same year. The song’s unexpected success has helped the album too which returns to the top 75 at No.60 this week. Rounding off the top five this week is Leon Jackson who slides four places from No.1 with When You Believe after three weeks in control.

Rihanna jumps to another new peak this week with Don’t Stop The Music which has moved 37-30-16-12-6 in the top 40 in the last few weeks and far outpeaks her last single Hate That I Love You which reached No.15 a couple of months ago and duly becomes her 6th UK top 10 hit. The song has of course not received its full physical release yet and with the single scheduled for February 11th it is quite likely that it will reach its peak long before it gets officially released. The highest new entry this week goes to American rapper and producer Lupe Fiasco with Superstar. The song which features an infectious chorus sung by Matthew Santos, an upcoming American folk singer, is by far Lupe’s biggest hit single in the UK though he guested on Kanye West’s 2006 No.6 hit Touch The Sky.

Spending an amazing 13th week in the top 10, Apologize by Timbaland and One Republic succumbs to the big moves above it and slides four places to No.8 this week. Take That are also down four places with their long running No.2 single Rule The World which has so far moved 2-2-2-2-3-4-5-7-7-5-5-9 in the top ten. As it has reached its twelfth week in the UK top 10 this week, it has become their single with the most longevity, eclipsing the eleven achieved by their 2006 comeback single Patience. And after releasing the follow up to the No.7 hit She’s So Lovely, just before Christmas, Elvis Ain’t Dead by pop-indie band Scouting For Girls only reached No.28 after its physical release. However, increasing popularity has pushed the single into the top ten for the first time and it has therefore moved 33-28-26-17-10 in its five weeks in the top 40. In a massively changed top ten this week there are now only three British acts, four Americans, a Canadian, a Swede and Rihanna from Barbados, giving us a truly international top 10.

Long runners from Girls Aloud, Leona Lewis and Mark Ronson lead the way outside the top ten this week as they all finally fall from glory. Kanye West is the next big mover with Homecoming, the third single from his No.1 album Graduation, entering the top 40 at No.14. The song, which features Coldplay’s Chris Martin on chorus vocal duties is the follow up to Good Life which only made a disappointing No.23 as the follow up to the huge No.1 single Stronger. The song which currently has no video is pencilled for a 4th February physical release although the song should move into the top ten next week at this rate.

Mika reaches a new peak with Relax Take It Easy, which climbs a couple of places to No.18 this week despite being released on physical formats last week. Like Nickelback and Scouting For Girls it seems that the physical gives a welcome chart boost to many singles but ultimately now it is download sales that will many songs to greater heights. Booty Luv are also up a couple of places to No.19 and score their fourth consecutive top 20 hit with Some Kinda Rush. The next big move comes from pint-sized Swedish popstar Robyn. Be Mine is the fourth single to be lifted from her self titled current album and has entered the top 40 on downloads alone at No.23 which is more than her last single Handle Me managed to do. That peaked at No.17 ultimately but this song is sure to do better, particularly with the physical single out on Monday.

The next new entry is I Fought The Lloyds by Oystar at No.25 which is a song about fighting the bank, Lloyds TSB while Scottish 20 year old Amy MacDonald moves back up the chart to No.28 with This Is The Life which is the songs current peak. Kylie Minogue re-enters a place below her peak of No.28 with next single Wow which is starting to pick up airplay now ahead of a physical release at the end of February. Indie band British Sea Power debut at No.31 with their new single Waving Flags while there is a re-entry at No.34 for Gimme More by Britney Spears, which peaked at No.3 last year. The final new entry to the top 40 is Moving To New York by Wombats who previously had a top 20 hit with Let’s Dance To Joy Division.

The album chart is no less eventful this week with massive changes despite there only being one new album that sold enough to make the top 75 this week. Scottish singer Amy MacDonald originally peaked at No.2 with her debut album This Is The Life last summer but thanks to a price point of £5 in many stores, the album has climbed from No.6 to the top spot for the first time this week. Raidohead therefore surrender the top spot and fall to No.2 with In Rainbows while Take That’s Beautiful World is down a place to No.3. Scouting For Girls seem to be riding the indie-pop wave taking over at the moment with their self titled debut album soaring to a new peak of No.4 this week. Mika slides a place to No.5 with Life In Cartoon Motion while Robert Plant & Alison Krauss’ successful collaboration album Raising Sand surges back to the top ten at No.6 this week. Newton Faulkner is also back to the top ten with his former No.1 album Hand Built By Robots while Amy Winehouse is down just a place with the almost two million selling Back To Black. Michael Buble slides four places to No.9 with Call Me Irresponsible while Leona Lewis continues her awful week by dipping seven places to No.10 with the former No.1 album Spirit.

Basshunter’s No.1 single is not exactly a huge selling one and therefore a new No.1 single is not out of the question next week. The biggest contender is likely to be Lupe Fiasco who releases Superstar physically on Monday. With downloads continually playing a bigger part in a single’s success it would not be out of the question for Nickelback or Britney Spears to move up to No.1 next week. Other singles physically released on Monday include Jack Johnson, Joss Stone, Wombats, Radiohead and Robyn.

On the list of Swedish acts that topped chart, you have to add Europe.
