Posted February 3, 200817 yr New talent joins the UK top ten but Basshunter and Adele stay in control New British talents David Jordan and One Night Only have scored their first ever UK top ten hit singles this week while British dance act Hot Chip get their first top ten hit after a few less successful hits. But its Swedish DJ Basshunter and soul singer Adele who stay in the top two rungs of the UK chart for a third consecutive week. Now You’re Gone has been a huge unexpected success for the Swede and this week clocks up its 4th week at the top of the UK chart. It continues the recent pattern of long running UK No.1 singles. Of the last five UK No.1 singles, Leon Jackson had three weeks in control, Leona Lewis had seven weeks and Sugababes and Sean Kingston managed four weeks each. Katie Melua and Eva Cassidy’s December No.1 What A Wonderful World has been the only chart topper in the last six months to spend a solitary week in control. Basshunter has been selling incredibly well in physical form for the last four weeks even though it has not topped the download chart for a few weeks now. British soul singer Adele has been the biggest download seller for the last three weeks and this week seems to be following the lead of Kate Nash, T2 and Take That by clocking up yet another week in the runners up spot. While Chasing Pavements stays at No.2 for a third week, in an unchanged top three, Canadian rock act Nickelback do not budge with Rockstar. The latest single to be taken from their now top three album All The Right Reasons, it is still gaining momentum leaping up to the top of the iTunes chart in the last few hours and showing that it still has a bright future ahead of it. Kelly Rowland jumps three places to No.4 after the physical release of Work with the Freemasons mix completely pushing the original R & B radio edit out of the limelight. It is now Kelly’s 5th UK top five hit following Dilemma (#1, 2002), Stole (#2, 2003), Can’t Nobody (#5, 2003) and Like This (#4, 2007). Though arguably a much bigger star, band mate Beyonce has actually only had two more top five successes in the UK than Kelly, achieving seven top five hits so far, one of them as a credited featured artist on a Jay-Z track. Of course it is worth noting that Kelly was a featured artist on the Nelly track Dilemma. All of Beyonce’s top five singles other than Irreplaceable have had featured artists while Kelly has had solo honours on three of hers though it is highly unlikely that Work would have gone anywhere near the top five without the popular Freemasons remix. Rounding off the top five this week is Rihanna’s Don’t Stop The Music. It is the first ever slide for the song which has so far moved 37-30-16-12-6-5-4-5 in the top 40. However it finally receives its physical release on Monday and should at leas return to its peak of No.4 next week if not go into the top three for the first time. The song that it originally sampled, Michael Jackson’s Wanna Be Startin’ Something has been re-released with Akon in some countries and sits near Don’t Stop The Music in many charts around the world. British dance act Hot Chip have always had huge critical acclaim being nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize with their second album The Warning. Ahead of the release of their third album Made In The Dark on Monday, the first single from the album Ready For The Floor had a simultaneous physical/digital release last Monday and shoots into the top ten at No.6 becoming their biggest hit single to date, eclipsing the 2006 No.27 hit Over & Over, though that track does return at No.68 this week. Piece Of Me is down just a place for Britney Spears on its fourth week in the top ten moving 2-3-6-7 so far in the top ten. One more week in the top ten would see it beat Gimme More which managed four weeks in the top ten late last year. It is already the biggest hit since 2004 for the troubled star. Lupe Fiasco has also been in the top ten for four weeks moving 7-4-5-8 but slides three places with Superstar which features American folk singer Matthew Santos. Young British indie band One Night Only had a No.46 hit last year with You & Me and last week debuted at No.49 with Just For Tonight. This week after a physical release and increased download impetus the song soars to No.9 to give the Yorkshire five piece their first top ten single. The song is used in the opening credits to the MTV show Nearly Famous. Rounding off the top ten is the new single from another upcoming British talent, David Jordan. The song made its first appearance in the top 40 at No.22 last week and this week soars to No.10 ahead of its physical release on Monday. It is the second single from his debut album Set The Mood following the late 2007 flop of Piece Of My Heart. In an increasingly more home grown top ten this week there are four Brits, a Swede, a Canadian, a Barbadian and three Americans. Next up just outside the top ten is Scouting For Girls who are finally on the slide with Elvis Ain’t Dead at No.11 while Soulja Boy leaves the top ten with Crank That. Jay Sean is down a couple with Ride It at No.13 while Robyn moves down to No.14 with Be Mine. Who’s That Girl has been confirmed as the 5th single from her self titled album and is out on April 14th physically while the album itself once again jumps to a new peak at No.11 this week. Mary J Blige entered the top 40 on downloads this week with Just Fine and this week jumps up to No.16 becoming her 16th UK top 20 single. The next new entry is from York band Elliot Minor. It is the fourth single from the York alternative pop rock act who are yet to release their debut album though all of their singles have reached the top 40. Still Figuring Out is a new entry at No.17 following a simultaneous physical/digital release and beats the peak of their previous biggest hit Jessica by two places. The next interesting movement is from Kylie Minogue. The Australian singer had a career blip between 1995-1999 with no top ten singles in the UK but since then has never missed the top ten with any single. Wow, the second single from X, has been on the chart now for almost two months moving 32-28-43-29-27-26-22 in the top 75, reaching its new peak this week. Though some fans are worrying that it will break her string of top ten hits, it is worth bearing in mind that the video is yet to receive regular play, having to go back to the editing room after breaking strobe lighting related rules, and she is also set to perform the track at the Brits later in the month. These two facts plus the inevitable increased airplay and the physical release should ensure another top ten hit for the star. Mark Brown has taken the operatic music used in the animated Lloyds TSB advert and transformed it into a dance hit which debuts at No.24 on downloads alone ahead of its physical release on Monday which will guarantee a top twenty placing next week. The track features the vocals of the rather underrated St Etienne singer Sarah Cracknell. The British band had a string of successful singles in the 1990’s, the biggest being the No.11 hit He’s On The Phone. Their biggest hit however was their 2000 collaboration with Paul Van Dyk on Tell Me Why (The Riddle) which debuted and peaked at No.7. Adele released her debut single Hometown Glory late last year as a limited edition 7 inch with only 500 copies pressed, many of which can now be found on eBay for heavily inflated prices hence her quick rise in fame. The track finally became available to download as part of her new album 19 and makes its debut in the singles chart this week at No.32. The only other new entry in the top 40 this week is for new Scottish band Urbnri who debut at No.34 with their first single Young Free and simple. The meaning of the band’s name would seem to be the famous Scottish drink Irn Bru spelt backwards. Everything else in the top 40 this week is going down with particular attention going to the last six tracks on the chart, all of which are long runners and some of which have been around since before last summer, the longest running being Rihanna’s ubiquitous No.1 single Umbrella which slides three places on its 38th week in the top fifty this week. Adele’s aforementioned debut album 19 is the first big release of the year and duly does what the single was supposed to do by entering the album charts at No.1 this week. The singer, who has already won a Brit award and been named top of the BBC’s Sound Of 2008 list, knocks last weeks chart toppers Scouting For Girls down a place to No.2 with their self titled debut album. Matching the current peak of Rockstar on the singles chart, Nickelback soar to No.3 with their 2005 album All The Right Reasons, which once again reaches a new peak this week. It is their third UK top five album to date. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss slide to No.4 with Raising Sand while metal act Bullet For My Valentine have the second highest new entry at No.5 with Scream Aim Fire. Amy MacDonald’s album This Is The Life has gone back to full price in most shops now and duly drops to No.6 while Rihanna moves back up to No.7 with Good Girl Gone Bad. Newton Faulkner and The Hoosiers are both down with their former No.1 albums at No.8 and No.9 respectively while US country star Garth Brooks’ Ultimate Hits is his first ever UK top ten album, jumping a place to No.10 this week. A quick look at some of the chart toppers around the world now. America is being led once again by Low by T-Pain which has sold over two million copies over there. Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Timbaland and Rihanna complete an urban dominated top five with the only song not from the genre in the top 10 being the singer songwriter piano pop song Love Song by Californian Sara Bareilles which has had its success as a result of featuring on a Napster advert. UK act Natasha Bedingfield has scored a No.3 album over there this week with Pocketful Of Sunshine a hybrid of six tracks from her 2007 UK album N.B. and seven brand new tracks. Alicia Keys and the Juno soundtrack are the only albums outselling her in the US this week. Germany and Australia are united in their love for our X Factor winner Leona Lewis with Bleeding Love topping both of their charts respectively while France is leading the way with Yael Naim’s New Soul at No.1 this week. The song which features on the new MacBook Air advert is set to be huge in America on the next Hot 100 and it has also entered the UK iTunes top 100 recently. Back to the UK chart, the top three was incredibly close this week between Basshunter, Adele and Nickelback and with the latter jumping to No.1 on iTunes it seems as if Nickelback have a chance to climb to No.1 with Rockstar next week and end Basshunter’s reign. However there are physical releases on Monday from 30 Seconds To Mars, Biffy Clyro, David Jordan, Mark Brown feat Sarah Cracknell, Michael Jackson, Morrisey and Rihanna with at least three of those set for the top ten and hoping to have the UK No.1 single next week.
