March 1, 200817 yr Just as there have been several GOOD Reviews of her Album. As I say to a Friend of mine - a Review is just the view of ONE person. It is not the be all & end all of what a Single, Album, Film, or Book, really is. Or how good or bad it is. In the 1970's ABBA Albums often got awful Reviews in some UK Music Papers - if they bothered to Review them at all. It did not stop them selling Millions, & being No.1 in the UK & many other Countries. I always judge an Album by my own ears - never do I let a Critic influence me. As someone once said:, 'When did you last see a Statue of a Critic?'..... Edited March 1, 200817 yr by zeus555
March 1, 200817 yr i reckon phil spectors greatest production was ike and tina turners version of 'river deep, mountain high'.. the 'wall of sound' at its best. so not starsailor then  She's become the female version of Nick 'Grimmy' Grimshaw - a w*n**r basically. BTW why is grinshaw on like every 'pop' music show these days?? if he's not stopped he'll be stripped nightly on itv1 at 20:00 with an omnibus saturday tea-time. it must be stopped!!!! *note i guess that jool's booiewoogie later has a slightly older demogrpahic and therefore could be seen as not pop  Just as there have been several GOOD Reviews of her Album. As someone once said:, 'When did you last see a Statue of a Critic?'..... well my dad's like that - always going on about trusting the 5 stars reviews of critics - but then again he is satisfied to watch a 1 star tvmovie on five, wednesday afternoon - and how you should make up your own mind. however there is so much things to know about, buy and discover - you need some guide to direct you to things you might like - tho like what andrew collins (i think) in the word magazine was getting about maybe you shouldnt put to much faith into the star system at the bottom that some people do, having that as final say without actually reading the review. and with ABBA - i guess they will have got $h!te reviews due to the usual music snobbery of journos, esp. if they were released towards to later part of the 70s when i guess punk good pop bad
March 3, 200817 yr ive orderd it :D i can see this selling over 1mil i think shes gonna have a amy winehouse year but without all the bad press seen her on the shockwave album chart show last night she seems really nice! Edited March 3, 200817 yr by jonieboi866
March 3, 200817 yr This is quite obviously going to #1 this week, I wonder what it'll sell first week. A lottttt I reckon bout 80k
March 3, 200817 yr Love this so far  So much better than Adele. just about - but of all of the same kinda thing this on the other hand - is much much better - and very underrated imo!!! cTtxruV9vgc
March 4, 200817 yr I've played this album in full four times, and my favourite tracks are the wonderful Rockferry, Distant Dreamer, Syrup & Honey and Serious. Funnily enough they are the four tracks co-written & produced by Bernard Butler. Sadly the rest of the album is a more patchy, samey & derivative (unless you like playing the spot the classic song it is ripping off game) affair that stops this album being a classic and drags it into Fame Academy territory. Also it is a great pity that Duffy is clearly not a great lyricist. One thing is sure this well sell by the bucketload, but it is not close in quality to Amy Winehouse's Back To Black and is only marginally better than the Adele album because Duffy is a marginally better vocalist. Nor is it close to the sublime Goldfrapp album I bought last week. Overall, I'm left disappointed.
March 4, 200817 yr Still listening, it's not bad, I'm hooked on the end bits of Rockferry though, her vocals are gorge. I'll post and write up some reviews soon, I think everyone should, I havn't seen some round here for a while.

OH WAIT.
March 4, 200817 yr I just can't deal with the fact the album's totally VOID of any emotion whatsoever. It's so clinical, so cold. It's a shame :(
March 4, 200817 yr ^ The [poor]"production" dosn't match up to her voice. I think the production is excellent. Clean and crisp, great string arrangements. Her voice may be good but it's that feature which I believe is devoid of emotion. Lots of squawking doesn't exactly hold much emotion in it...

Lots of squawking doesn't exactly hold much emotion in it... I think the production is quite weak myself. With a voice like that, like a 1960's bird I'd expect her to do something that suits her time period, like Rock N Roll for example, , [which will never happen] but overall the music is a bit bland (except for Distant Dreamer/Rockferry/Mercy). I totally understand what you and others mean about emotion though, she has a excellent voice, but what she's giving out comes across as cold & empty.
March 4, 200817 yr I have no doubt that Adele's album is much blander than Duffy's. I bought Rockferry today and I love it, I didn't skip a single track and i'm just entranced by the title song. Edited March 4, 200817 yr by seejayjee

It is not as good as Goldfrapp I would agree - Goldfrapp is a classic and Duffy is not (although a good album). I think it will easily sell a million this year as well (projected to sell 200k this week). Duffy is, however, a million times better than Adele, imo.

Warwick Avenue is one of the most gorgeous songs I've heard in a long time while Mercy is set to become a future classic...that's at least 6 out of 10
