Surely as 'indie' becomes more popular ... it becomes 'pop' music - its inevitable!

Norma

Good point- One thing annoys me about indie is that people seem to stop liking them when they become popular! . People seem to be obsessed with up-and-comers but once they get there they seem to just go away.

i think its getting better though. I think it will mature soon...

 Calm down!

I don't know what you'd class them bands but I wouldn't class them as pop, same goes for The Feeling and Plain White T's - mainstream???

It's bands like Razorlight that paved the way for these bands to come in...a band who were considered indie (although f*** knows why - Golden Touch is the limpest, pishest song ever) and went as mainstream as hell with the Boomtown Rats sound of America.

The Feeling, Scouting for Girls, Hoosiers, Plain White T's, One Night Only are all the product of major labels finding a niche (exploit the same fools who got sucked into the arse end of Britpop a decade ago and convince them they like this while pretending it's cool).

I'm sick of all this Indie/Britpop bull$h!t that is coming out at the moment, all these bands sound the same! I don't give a $h!t if its popular, its bullf***! These bands never have anything worthwhile to sing about, which would be okay if they didn't sound so mediocre. What I don't get about these bands though, is how they always seem to get so popular, even amongst groups who claim to only like heavy music. Now, don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people expanding their musical horizons, but these people still claim not to have done. Indie seems to be accepted universally as the best musical style. All I want to know is: "Why?!"

I have to say "respect" to the poster.... I've often been totally dismayed myself by what passes for Indie or Alternative Rock these days... As someone old enough to damn well KNOW what real Indie and Alternative actually is (and it sure as sh!t aint bands like The Kooks, Razorlight or Fall Out Boy...), I'm pretty shocked... Indie/Alternative to me is bands like Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Fall, Happy Mondays, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Jesus and Mary Chain, Spiritualized, Mercury Rev, Beck, Flaming Lips, etc.....

Of course, these are all pretty old bands, but frankly I dont really hear much coming up now that even sounds remotely like the spirit or attitude towards music of these bands, which is pretty disturbing and does not bode well for the genre....

Have you actually listened to the songs by the majority of the bands posted in the indie forum? Becuase they sound nothing like the watered down pap of the Kooks or Razorlight which you mentioned? If you have and still think that, then fair enough, but I don;t think you can just lump every indie band together. There are still so many different styles and variations to proper indie bands at the moment, the ones that are still fairly small and are making music because they love it and if they sell some records then it's an added bonus, not these types that are signed to major labels and if they don't get A-Listed by Radio 1 and make the top 10 they're going to be dropped.

I'm gonna recommend MGMT and Holy f*** to you right now. Ironically MGMT are on Sony - sometimes they do get it right.

If people are going off 'indie' as it becomes popular ... does that mean that 'pop' is the new 'indie'? Or would this be rambling?

Norma

Nope, indie just shifts...and to be honest, for the first time in ages, to truly sound indie you have to be on an independent label as the majors are just going for what sells to the pop market.

It's now just enough to sound like the Arctic Monkeys when in reality they're probably moving away from that now.

The term 'R&B' puzzles me more than anything! What they call R&B today sounds nothing like stuff that I would have called R&B 20 years ago! I suppose its just one of those 'circle of life' things!

Norma

so would that be Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and the who???

Any genre of music sounds the same like Pop, dance, hip hop etc.

Indie bands such as Oasis, Blur, Manic Street preachers etc can make good music, thats why they are accepted universally! You won't see someone like cascada accepted coz they make rubbish music.

but they are quite conservative and dull -

Oasis - still indie these days?? more like dull dadrock - and less punk than fellow dadrockers - the who!!!

blur - dodgy baggy bandwaggon jumpers - wrote one of the worst number ones ever (can you guess which one???) - but redemption later

manic street preschers - dull boring driving rock - might have been ok when they were the punk guns n roses

cascada - hi-nrg power ballads

Scouting For Girls, The Kooks, The Hoosiers and Razorlight - these four bands highlight exactly what is wrong with the current music scene.

Yes but none of them are CLOSE to being Indie bands though!

except if one of those indie bands are called the police

(with reference to boomtown rats - page 73, the police - page 249 in the 77 - the year of punk and new wave book - artists a-z book by Henrik bech poulsen)

But how can people think Hoosiers and Scouting For Girls are "Indie"? That is literally driving me insane right now!

I know. What I mean is what the general public seem to class as indie and buy in droves because they want to be 'cool'. Really annoys me.

yeah exactly - i guess its due to the English psyche - the 'we think we're so damn cool problem' - and so they are marketed as such to try and get away from the negativitys associated with the word pop and being popular.

yeah a lot of it is like being sucked into a large big marketing machine for the sake of perceived coolness

That's really got bugger all to do with it.. The Cure, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, New Order, Depeche Mode sold records by the truckload and were pretty massively popular (esp. Depeche Mode and The Cure, who can still sell out huge arenas in Europe and the US every time they tour)... I would argue these bands sold considerably more records at their respective peaks than most of the "in vogue" bands at the moment. It's all about quality, the spirit and the attitude of the bands, too many "indie" or "alternative" bands these days just seem to look at it as a career, the attitude is just wrong in a lot of bands who claim to be "indie" or "alternative"...

I'm gonna recommend MGMT and Holy f*** to you right now. Ironically MGMT are on Sony - sometimes they do get it right.

Cheers, I'll check them out....

I have to say that I do like Gallows... They've defintely got the spirit and the attitude pretty spot on....

so would that be Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and the who???

Eh? No - I mean going back to people like James Brown, Ray Charles, some Roy Orbison and even Elvis Presley, but I forget how young some posters are on here (and I don't mean to sound patronising by saying that - apologies if I do)

Norma

who are MGMT? does that stand for something?

They're from New York and claim their music is a mix of Spacemen 3 and Hall & Oates. MGMT stands for Management as far as I know.

"Oracular Spectacular" is a real hit and miss affair for me. Some strong tracks on there but equally some incredibly weak and dull ones. OH WELL.
Er what a random topic, it would have been better if the person who started the topic stuck around to tell us which "indie" bands he currently hates, instead of just saying all of them. If he really does hate every indie band around at the moment, why bother posting in here

I'm assuming the poster is having a pop more at the likes of Razorlight, Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs, The Ordinary Boys, etc....

Ah, I'm still waiting for Sony to send me out my copy of the album. I just love Time to Pretend - it's like Flaming Lips and Buck's Fizz duetting on a Spiritualized track.

I'm thinking of purchasing Oracular Spectacular myself, got a few tracks after liking Time To Pretend (Kids being my fave that I've got so far) now, it's interesting they're on Sony as it'd be nice for a band like that to 'sell'.

And you're proud of that? :D

Of course most indie bands are very bland (and useless).
