April 15, 200817 yr I've said it before, and if as you say, Goldfrapp truly don't care about the charts - then that's just lovely and romantic and fabulously old-school - but record companies do not work that way. They can't just release anything and get away with it even if the sales aren't there. To date Seventh Tree has only sold 100,000 copies and the lead single's sales power is now completely gone. If the album makes platinum then they're truly safe, but if it can't push past 150-200k I'd predict that the next time around they will be guided in a much more commercial route, Rubbish mate.. Mute aren't that sort of label.. You've clearly no idea of the bands who've been on their roster (and their imprints rosters..) if you think that - the likes of Depeche Mode (who've ONLY ever been with Mute), Diamanda Galas, DAF, Dinosaur Jr (Blast First), Add N To (X), Nick Cave, Nitzer Ebb, Moby, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion..... Somehow I think Goldfrapp are selling more records than Jon Spencer or Dinosaur Jr..... :P Mute are a Major record company with a very 'Indie' sort of attitude (and they've been incredibly successful with this attitude), they are NOT Sony/BMG or EMI..... Mute have their "heavy hitters" like DM (almost 80 million in album sales) and Moby (dunno the actual number, but it's LOADS let's face it...) and they can use the money they make off these guys to actually nurture artists... Yes, romantic, yes, Old School.. Yes, it fukkin' works for them, and gives us great music to listen to from truly ground-breaking artists..... I truly just dont understand your attitude towards music, you seem to care more about the bullsh!t like "shifting units" or "chart placings" more than the actual music itself. Why do you define your tastes on what shifts units...?
April 15, 200817 yr I truly just dont understand your attitude towards music, you seem to care more about the bullsh!t like "shifting units" or "chart placings" more than the actual music itself. Why do you define your tastes on what shifts units...? How dare you? You ignorant fool. What evidence could you possibly have for coming out with a ludicrous statement like that? YES, I care about sales because the huge majority of the time it works out that without sales, an artist is dropped, and no fan wants that to happen because they want the music to keep coming. I also care about the sales because I'd like more of the population of this world to hear the music of my favourite artists. But to suggest that I care MORE about the sales than the music is utterly ridiculous - have you not seen my posts around Buzzjack? Probably not, because posters like you are naturally too busy putting down others' tastes. I'd have thought it perfectly clear to anyone with a working set of eyes that I'm passionate about all of the artists whose music I enjoy - passionate about the music. As a side note, must you say fukkin' in every single post you make? It's an absolute affection and it's borderline painful to read. THANKS 'MATE'.
April 15, 200817 yr Really glad it's top 20, had feared it would flop completely! Edited April 15, 200817 yr by RabbitFurCoat
April 16, 200817 yr Really glad it's top 20, had feared it would flop completely! Thats really good news, however, I have a horrible feeling that the single may fall to top 30 before sunday, but fingers crossed it holds on top 20, but it isnt going to have a long chart run unfortunately
April 18, 200817 yr I know what the start of this song sounds like now... Something from the Original, 'The Railway Children'

April 18, 200817 yr No longer top 20 :(. i had hoped to be proved wrong, oh well, if people cant see what a great song it is over dirge from chris brown and nickleback they deserve to be shot!!!!
April 20, 200817 yr Happiness debuts in the top 75 at #25...I was hoping for at least top 20 but I did'nt even think it would make top 40 after seeing the download sales so its not all bad.
April 20, 200817 yr its a very forgettable song, definitely not one of my faves by them unfortunately.
April 20, 200817 yr That's quite the disappointment. It had plenty of airplay so perhaps the public just didn't take to this song...
April 20, 200817 yr That's quite the disappointment. It had plenty of airplay so perhaps the public just didn't take to this song... I completely disagree. Considering there were no original tracks for the CD single; considering Goldfrapp themselves have said they see the Seventh Tree very much as an album first, with a collection of songs on it; Considering they've quite deliberately steered their sound back to their more atmospheric roots of their critically acclaimed debut album Felt Mountain away from the more commercial (but less impressive work) of especially their 3rd album Supernature. Then UK#25 is a good chart position, as I expected it to only limp into the Top 40. What would be more important to Alison & Will AND their record company is that the album has consolidated chart wise spending an 8th week in the album Top 30 with the music festival season on its way.
April 20, 200817 yr The album is indeed doing well, albeit priced pretty cheaply in some stores. But Supernature being poor quality is a matter of debate. We've had the 'new fans were crap and knew none of the old material and spoiled the concerts' lecture before as some way of proving Supernature to be an embarassing era of some sort, but it was their break through and songs such as Slide In, Fly Me Away, Number 1 and Ride A White Horse all beat Happiness hands down; it doesn't even compare to me.

Jark, I think the main problem here is that you're, at best, a very casual observer of Goldfrapp and their music. I'd hazard a guess the only album by them you own is Supernature - I notice in each Song of the Year contest, you fail to give Goldfrapp classics like Strict Machine, Train, even Ooh La La, any points. It seems only a few select tracks from Supernature, and A&E, you actually like by the band? And as for the new fans spoiling the last tour - yes, they did, absolutely - it wasn't a lecture, merely an observation - because I was there, and because I've seen Goldfrapp countless times - the first time in a pub in Bristol where all the band had to play was the debut album (which, for the record, everyone loved back then). This new audience deliberately spoiled anything that wasn't off Supernature (some even speaking loudly on their mobiles when the really slow songs from the first 2 albums were played) - much to the displeasure of Alison Goldfrapp herself, actually - which is apparently one of the reasons Goldfrapp steered in such a new direction for the new album. They didn't want the pop fans following them. And it appears, thankfully, the pop fans have left them. Somehow, I don't see Alison and Will being too upset by this - they probably feel liberated if anything. I think Happiness has done brilliantly, considering. Goldfrapp, from anyone's perspective, are head and shoulders above everything else in the charts right now, aesthetically, musically and artistically, and it seems wherever they step, the rather sad likes of Kylie and Madollar will follow. That a band as out-there as Goldfrapp even make the top 75 is affirmation enough, i think.

It seems only a few select tracks from Supernature, and A&E, you actually like by the band? Well I own two of four albums in full - I'm not sure that makes me 'a casual observer at best'? It is half of their discography. The reason I don't give those songs points is that I don't like them especially; it's as simple as that. Train I never have been able to get into, and Ooh La La I find to be hugely overrated. The latter is actually quite an annoying song. I do LOVE Strict Machine, however, so I'm not sure why I didn't give that any points in the contest - it'll either be because I overlooked it or because I felt 20 other songs were better. The former, probably. I don't quite know what you meant by that last statement...I love the entire of Supernature (barr OLL), and I own Seventh Tree but can only say with any honesty that I enjoy four of the ten tracks.
