Tottenham Hotspur sign Luka Modric for transfer record of £15.5m

Gary Jacob

Tottenham Hotspur this morning agreed a deal to sign Luka Modric believed to be for a minimum of €20m (about £15.5m), breaking their transfer record.

The Barclays Premier League club have beaten competition from Newcastle United, Chelsea and Manchester City for the signature of the Croatia midfield player from Dynamo Zagreb. There are believed to be add-ons to take the fee to £20.5m.

Modric flew to London this morning to have a medical, discuss personal terms, and is expected to watch the match against Bolton Wanderers today. Modric has been offered a five-year contract. Newcastle offered £16m.

Modric, 22, was instrumental in helping his country to beat England 3-2 in the crucial European Championship qualifying match at Wembley in November, a defeat that led to Steve McClaren's departure as England head coach.

Modric's vision and passing have earned praise from many observers and he can play on the left side of midfield or as a playmaker behind the forwards.

Ramos's priority is to sign at least one goalkeeper, two defenders and a forward. Tottenham's first choice is Carlos Kameni, of Espanyol, but the deal has hit an unspecified sticking point. The Espanyol player can be bought for €6m (about £4.7m).

They have also looked at Heurelho Gomes, who has been valued at £12mby PSV Eindhoven. Tottenham have watched Maarten Stekelenburg but have doubts about the Ajax goalkeeper. Also in their sights are Diego López, the Villarreal player, and Marco Amelia, the Livorno goalkeeper who was in the Italy squad that won the World Cup in 2006.

wooohoooo...

Mamićs made a lot of money out of this one...

Hope he'll be as good as Čorluka, Kranjčar and Da Silva...

LOL well all the ITK stuff on Spurs boards is that we pulled out of Ronaldinho in return for them to pull out for Modric so sounds like Ronaldinho will be in a Newcastle shirt next season

Either Milan club or Newcastle - I know what I'd choose :kink:

plus how the heck does that work out. You pull out of buying a player they don't want anymore, so you can buy a player that both of you want  So they're minus Modric and Ronaldinho

Spurs were chasing Ronaldinho and Newcastle want him, we were chasing Modric as was Newcastle so according to a guy called dragon1 who knows everything Spurs Spurs and Newcastle did a deal where they will pull out of any interest in Modric and leave the way clear for Spurs and in return Spurs withdraw from chasing Ronaldinho to leave the way clear for Newcastle

Will be ironic if they end up with neither LOL :o

I think he's potentially a good signing, but i'm not so sure about the price. He played excellently against England (which has obviously upped his price by a fair amount) but I think 15.8 million is a bit of a risk, but heyho, i'll probably turn out to be wrong. Spurs must either have a big transfer budget for the next season, or one or two faces might be out of the door though...
well they have said if someone matches the asking price for Berbatov he can go. Could that be the financing for the summer ?

We are owned by a multi billionaire called Joe Lewis 2nd only to Abramovich in terms of personal wealth of football chairmen so while he does not go mad with money like Abramovich does there is always necessary funds for any player the manager requires hence the fact we spent £40m last summer and then bought Woodgate and Hutton for £15m in Jan, Lewis will have paid for Modric too

It is believed that Lewis has made available £40m this summer plus the proceeds from player sales so without Berbs that could be £50-60m and with Berbs up to £80m

Yeah I guess so. I mean, they'd get a fair amount for him if the demand was there (can't help think they'd over-price him a little, and I can't think of too many of the top clubs that are desprately in need of a striker and would blow 20+ million on him).

We don't need to sell, he has effectively 3 years left on his contract but we have said that any club willing to pay £40m can have him and if no one wants him then he stays :)

We have no need to sell

And that article is completely wrong given we paid £16.8m for Marcus Bent last summer so Bent is our record signing not Modric

if MARCUS is worth that much, then Heskey must be worth £30M :heehee:

I assume it's counting the 'add-ons' though which would put it up to £20m... You might not spend as much money as most of the big four, but you certainly waste as much. I read you spent around £40m last season - on f***ing what?!! Bent (he needs a run but is nowhere near the class of Keane or Berbs), Kaboul ($h!te), Boateng ($h!te), Bale (crocked).

LOL  blame the F1 lol I was distracted :P

Mind you way he has played we might as well have signed Marcus :|

I think Charlton took you for a ride with the money they demanded. Maybe half of the fee at tops, but certainly not near £17M

I think Darren Bent highlighted a problem with Spurs considering Jol got the blame for a 'poor signing' when it wasn't actually him who wanted to sign it was the chairman. <_<

£16.5m over 4 years, and he will sign a 6 year contract all subject to him being granted a work permit which is well almost a certainty really.

And Spurs are also chasing Diego Capel and David Villa. Looks like it could be farewell Berbatov if Villa comes in.
