Posted May 5, 200817 yr Free Coldplay download figures released 16:10 | Wednesday April 30, 2008 By Ben Cardew Coldplay’s new single Violet Hill was downloaded for free by over 600,000 people in the 24 hours since it was made available yesterday. In the first 12 hours it was downloaded by 300,000 people, a figure which doubled overnight as other countries logged on to coldplay.com, the source of the free download. The single will be available free for a week and will then be released as a paid-for digital single on May 6. Earlier today Last.fm claimed that Coldplay’s free download of Violet Hill was a massive success, based on their own figures. Violet Hill, which was available as a free download from coldplay.com from 1215pm yesterday, was listened to 33,523 in 23 hours by Last.fm users, according to figure in the Guardian. The free download comes more than a month ahead of the release of Coldplay’s fourth studio album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. The download coincided with the track receiving its radio premiere on Jo Whiley’s Radio one show. Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends is released on June 16.
May 5, 200817 yr Its kind of silly releaseing it as all the fans got it for free so they wont download it again to pay for
May 5, 200817 yr I think it will provide some valuable publicity though. Aside from that, I agree there is no benefit!
May 5, 200817 yr Let's see what happens with sales, especially of the album. I think it will do excellently.
May 6, 200817 yr Whilst I agree that it was strange to offer the single for free...I also believe that it's a great way to get people interested in the band again as they have been out of the spotlight for a little while now.
May 6, 200817 yr Its kind of silly releaseing it as all the fans got it for free so they wont download it again to pay for I don't think they'll really care. Single sales count for so little these days, and they only act as a prop for the album and with all the media attention etc. which will only increase the amount of people who are away that Coldplay are back, which is really a good thing as they've been away for 3 years. The music industry for bands especially is changing dramatically and lots of bands are coming back and releasing their single as a free download, so this method must be working or else record companies/the band wouldn't be trying out this technique. :P
May 6, 200817 yr 2m???? I cant believe it... It was a great business deal. They didnt get any money from it but it was (still is) big publicity. Probably 1,5m of 2m really really liked the song and they will buy album so it was pretty smart to put it on free download.
May 7, 200817 yr yeah its really OMG...but from the other hand they could offer us a better track for a start.they definitely have now the publicity but do they really have the recognition they want with that release? i hope things to change with their new album n not to talk only about its huge sales ...
