Posted May 7, 200817 yr So, with Coldplay selling so much of Violet Hill This week - is it actually chart eligible?? Such a shame if not as I think it could potentially edge Madonna
May 7, 200817 yr Author  Just found out it is inelgible - outrageous rules. A lot of people will have bought this to make it count. Come on OCC - use your bloody common sense, so what if it was free last week - It is not this week ^_^ Idiots.
May 7, 200817 yr ah maybe thats why it was free last week then?? funny though - wasn't Madonna's 'Hey You' available for free for one week prior to release? that then charted in the lower reaches of the top 200...as a download Edited May 7, 200817 yr by seanyboy
May 7, 200817 yr We don't know it's not eligible, it might just have not sold enough copies. :| It was only on one days sales, Pigeon Detectives had three and at midnight last night (the one day cut off) was only just behind them on iTunes and that was only midweek #35. Until tomorrow's mids we don't know anything.
May 8, 200817 yr I hope you're right about the Coldplay songs being eligible. I've been worried all afternoon. Having two Coldplay songs in the top 10 chart would be like the Beatles all over again. Coldplay is the most interesting rock group ever and it is thrilling to be alive during their period of producing such quality songs and music ... just like our ancestors had the pleasure of experiencing Handel, Beethoven, Elgar, and Gershwin. I put Chris Martin in that group and he's clearly the greatest songwriter of the 2000s.

I'm stuggling to work out if this part of your post is serious or not... especially the part about them being "the most interesting rock group ever"?

I think the VLV one is chart eligiable its just VH that isnt! Although Coldplay should be banned for making music... EVER!!!
May 8, 200817 yr I meant every word. Coldplay is the best rock group ever and I've been following music for a very long time.
May 8, 200817 yr There are reports that ‘Violet Hill’ was downloaded for free over 2 million times so how it’s now No2 on itunes @79p is beyond me… It looks highly likely that ‘Violet Hill’ will be NCQ’d as The Ting Tings’ initially gave away ‘Great DJ’ before making it available commercially on itunes but it remained ineligible for the chart even though people were actually paying money for it. ‘Viva La Vida’ on the other hand should be chart eligible. Although I’ve not seen it on any release schedules and tracks need to be registered 3 weeks before release to be chart eligible. While it could have been planned but not promoted, it could have easily been a last minute record company money-spinner idea after the success of ‘Violet Hill’ in which case if it wasn’t registered for release 3 weeks ago it will also be NCQ’d. We won’t know for sure till the midweek’s later today or maybe tomorrow for ‘Viva La Vida’ but it’d be interesting to gauge the reaction if it turned out the top2 biggest selling singles of the week were both excluded.
May 8, 200817 yr i hope neither of their songs are eligible. they'd surely bump Kylie from the top 10 :arrr:

I've never heard of this rule before...I thought anything could reach the chart these days if enough copies were being downloaded?

Apparently Viva is ineligible due to a buy-1-get-1-free deal with Violet Hill
May 8, 200817 yr that fact that the 7'' is being given away free with NME has anything to do with chart eligility?
May 8, 200817 yr is this true? I've never heard of this rule before...I thought anything could reach the chart these days if enough copies were being downloaded? It makes total sense that if it sells enough copies it will be eligible to chart. Who cares if it was registered or not. Did people buy it and pay for it? If they did it should chart.
May 8, 200817 yr that fact that the 7'' is being given away free with NME has anything to do with chart eligility? Isn't that what The Ting Tings did with Great DJ, and that was ineligible. I really don't get why the OCC makes these singles ineligible. If ppl are STILL buying the Coldplay track at full price after it was free last week and free with the NME, then it should be allowed to chart. It will sell less than it would of if it wasn't free, so why do they care. With regards to the buy one get one free deal, why don't the OCC just halve the sales of each track bought in this manner, or publish a minimum price that a track has to sell at to qualify for the chart, so there's no confusion. It's the record company's fault - why release 2 chart ineligible tracks anyway
May 8, 200817 yr it just dawned on me seeing a band picture of Coldplay that apart from Chris Martin I had no idea what the other three members looked like, despite them being the biggest band in the world :heehee:
May 8, 200817 yr I will be abboyed if the OCC ban Ting Tings from charting yet they let Coldplay enter the top 5, which lets face it WILL happen, I'm confused but either way I can't stand Coldplay and wish they would just stop making music...same as Hoosiers and Scouting For Girls too but this lot do have some talent i spose......
May 8, 200817 yr The Ting Tings were ineligible because it was given away on iTunes and that' where the majority of its sales came from. Madonna did the same thing as Coldplay last year and charted a week later. I see no reason why it shouldn't chart. And let's face it, if it's going to be the song that sells the most copies this week there will be complaints and rightly so. Whether you like them or not the song that sells the most copies should be number one.

To be fair the rule is absolutely ridiculous. It's going to take someone big like Coldplay to get it (deservedly) changed!
