A group who divided opinion in the 70s and 80s, either you liked them or hated them...

I had a sneaky admiration for them but wouldn't admit to liking them - Rocking All Over The World (brilliant!), Rain, Mystery Song and my favourite Wild Side Of Life.

Was anyone a fan, or did anyone hate them?

Their live shows are absolutely brilliant .Down Down,Caroline,Rain,Roll over lay down,Rockin all over the world are all classics.Their cover of Wild Side of Life was a great version .I didnt like In the Army now .After 40+ years they still manage to sell out venues so they must be doing something right.

Seen them live many times and have met them, absolute legends both as live artists and as guys :)

Not exactly groundbreaking or innovative but whatever anyone thinks of them it is some achievement to have hit songs in 5 different decades

Fave albums of theirs for me are Piledriver and On The Level, adore stuff like Big Fat Mama, Bye Bye Johnny etc

never has a musical combo been more aptly named....

though their songs were very repetitive, (only watertwat has sold the same record more times...lol), i cant find it in me to criticise them!

'pictures of matchstick men' , 'ice in the sun', and 'mystery song' were favs of mine.

however theres an element of 'queen' about them... blind faith by 'rock' fans who arent really rock fans. i always considered them rock for nice people, not the same league as ozzy or motorhead.

I used to really like Status Quo, a group of us used to meet up most nights when we were younger and the only Album we used to play was.."Hello", fantastic Album :yahoo:

1. Roll Over Lay Down

2. Claudie

3. Reason For Living

5. Caroline

6. Softer Ride

7. And It's Better Now

8. Forty-Five Hundred Times

9. Joanne

I love all these songs and I also love "What Your Proposing"

As you can see I am a fan of their early to mid 70's stuff as opposed to their more recent stuff, In The Army Now, Living On An Island etc were appalling, Rockin' All Over The World I preferred the John Fogerty version 10 times over compared with Quo's and Bruce Springsteen's live version tops Quo's version

Quo forgot their harder blues rock early to mid 70's roots (excluding their early stuff) and became too commercial although they are BRILLIANT live and Rick and Francis are top geezers

I used to be a little bit of a fan of some of their early/mid 70's stuff like Caroline,Down Down etc, but didn't like their 80's stuff.

Still like Pictures of matchstick men though.

 Status Quo are a great group. Hoping to get tickets to see them play live in August  and see them play some of my faves including Rockin all over the world, Down down, Caroline, Pictures of matchstick men :)

Their early stuff is really good heads down no-nonsense mindless boogie.

On The Level and Piledriver are good albums.

Their psychedelic stuuf from 67-68 was also really good but their 80s output was shocking.

In The Army is pants andthey quickly became a charicature of a band.

Actually i preferred their early stuff from 68 to 70

Pictures Of Matchstick Men - (this was a TOTP performance)

Ice In The Sun - (this was a Beat Club performance)

Technicolur Dream - (this was another Beat Club performance)

In My Chair

Down The Dustpipe

Are You Growing Tired Of My Love - (this was another Beat Club performance)

IMHO They were at their best in the late 1960s, good with their hard rocking 1970s output, but have been treading water ever since. Although they know how to put on a live show.

As for there most well known song, this is how it should sound, by the original & best version a US Top 40 hit in 1975:

John Fogerty - Rockin` all over the world

Glad you finally agree with me about something lol, I was hyping up the Fogerty version earlier on in the thread and it pisses over Quo's version, Springsteen's version too is a cracking attempts with some great keyboard playing etc

I never knew Rocking All Over The World was a cover version.

You learn something new everyday.

Yeah, Pictures of Matchstick Men is a good 'un. When I was really young in the 80's I liked Burning Bridges and In the Army Now...but I was young.
They where pretty much (from what I've listened of them) Rock N Roll Pop ? Never even knew they had 60's material!..

Personally I loved their 60s music but I went off them when they went mainly 12 bar rock.

Pictures Of Matchstick Men

Black Veils Of Melancholy

Ice In The Sun

Technicolour Dreams

I was never a fan but you choose some of their best singles, along with untypical stuff like In The Army Now, Pictures Of matchstick men, and their defitive Quo hit Whatever You Want...

I think my favourite Status Quo songs are the ones that were not quite typical for this band: Pictures of Matchstick Men (i think even Syd Barret could have been proud of such a song) and In The Army Now (Bolland Brothers' cover).

I don't like their standard three bars rock'n'rolls. Don't like Francis Rossi's voice either, which is no good for rock'n'roll, i believe. I would say, these guys are too predictable.

P.S. I first wrote down my post and then looked back and had found i almost repeated popchartfreak's post. Be sure it was not made deliberately :D
