Who do the people here think have/had the 'Purest' Female

Vocals? Where every word was sung perfectly, & the tone of their

singing was as clear as crystal?

Many of us would agree that Karen Carpenter had such a voice - but

who else - from the 1950's to the 2000's?

For me it would be a close run contest between Whitney Houston, Celine Dion & Mariah Carey :)

... m8, they are nowhere near as good as what the aforementioned karen carpenter was, zeuss asked who had the purest voice, wailing b1tches dont count! :)

we recently mentioned sandy denny, i also would rate maddy prior (steeleye span) as ive heard her live hold a clear note on several occassions. beth orton too is pretty good.

dunno about the 50's though.... not sure any were, but that might just be my lack of knowlege in that area.

The three warblers! You have to be joking!

Kate Bush, Liz Fraser (although you couldn't understand what she was singing half the time - more due to using made up languages)

There's only Karen Carpenter really who matches the description you give.

No - there are more such 'Pure' Female Vocalists than Karen Carpenter:,

The 1930's & 1940's - Judy Garland:,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10w_sEcHlGs

The 1950's - Doris Day:,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8Ar9Q0Eru4

Due to many Carpenters Compilations being Hits, & the

Duo having their Hits much later than Judy & Doris, people

forget that their were 'Pure' Female Vocalists before Karen.

Can anyone think of any from the 1960's?

(Not all 'Pure' Female Vocalists were Solo Acts).

Plus, the only Non-American - so far - & the first in this Thread from

the 1960's - Judith Durham - who was the Female in The Seekers - from

Australia.

They were huge in the UK from 1965 to 1968, & in Australia, & even

had 3 USA Top 20 Hits. Judith Sings every word perfectly:,

The Carnival Is Over (1965) UK No.1

I'll Never Find Another You (1965) UK No.1/USA No.4

Georgy Girl (1967) UK No.3/USA No.2 (From their Farewell Concert - London 1968)

Well, Judith certainly has a clearer & stronger voice than the only other Australian

Female to have ever been huge in the UK - Kylie Minogue. And, I realise that some

people will see The Seekers as 'square', & Judith's voice as, 'not that great', & so on,

but, I disagree - just as others can disagree with me - of course. She has a perfectly

clear voice. It has a kind of 'English Aristocratic' tone to it - like she was the 'poshest'

Girl in School. But, it is still a beautiful voice.

By the way, The Seekers (in 1965), ABBA (in 1976), Boney M (in 1978),

& Blondie (in 1979), are the only 4 Male/Female Groups to have had 2 Singles

in the 'Top 10 Singles Of The Year', (Best Sellers), in the UK.

I acknowledge that Karen Carpenter had a great voice, & The Carpenters should

have been as big here as in the USA - but, they never had a UK No.1 Single.

'Superstar', 'Rainy Days & Mondays', 'Hurting Each Other', & 'Yesterday Once More',

should all have been UK No.1 Singles - terrific records. Criminally underrated in the

UK - as were others - 'Top Of The World', 'Sing', etc..

I'd forgotten all about Judith! Shame on me - as I remember mentioning her in another thread a few months ago! I agree - she has a beautiful clear, pure voice.

Eva Cassidy

I have her Songbird album but actually think she's a bit overrated. *waits for backlash* :o

I have her Songbird album but actually think she's a bit overrated. *waits for backlash* :o

I also have her Songbird Album, and i want her version of "somewhere Over The Rainbow" played at my funeral.

I have to add Agnetha's voice to my list...I love her voice

But..............Karen Carpenter is the winner for me, sorry  Carpenters are my favorite band and of course, I have loved Karen's voice for 2 years already..There's no one like her ( I do know there are another girls who have very good voices, I enjoy listening Georgy Girl a lot)...but...Karen gets the prize for me. I'm bad though they were not so popular in my country and that not too many people give her what she deserves, I mean, Some people may know Karen because of her disease not cause of her wonderful voice and the amazing job she did with Carpenters, which in my opinion is not fair! A person should be known for the good things they did in life and not for the mistakes they did at some point.

Awwwwww......Karen   Every time I play Trying to get the feeling again, my body keeps changing my mind, lovelines, if i had you, close to you, it's going to take some time, I wish she was alive to give us more of her purity

I'd say Karen Carpenter. I never liked the music of the Carpenters, but I can't fault her singing. Her voice is almost faultless and she sings every word with such clear diction. She almost makes it seem too easy.

And the World's WORST - ever - Female Recording Artist?

Mrs. Elva Miller - a USA Granny - who actually Recorded Singles &

Albums in the Mid 1960's - and had HITS in the USA! She died in 1997.

Her 'Greatest Hits' Album sold 250,000, in the USA, in its first 3 Weeks

in 1966 - she was 57 at the time.

Here is her Cover of 'Downtown' - The Petula Clark 1964/1965 Hit. (She

forgets the words a few times).

But, for my money, her worst ever Cover was her Version of USA

Girl Group - The Toys - 'A Lovers Concerto' - every time you think

Mrs. Miller has sang her worst on it, she gets even more awful!

She also seems to like to sing 'Do! Do! Do! Do! Do!' over & over again,

when the Female Backing Singers, do their part on their own - and then

'Granny' tries for a really high note near the end - and you wonder who was

more Insane - Mrs. Miller, those who bought her Records, or the Record

Company that let her near a Recording Studio!!!!!

I think I'd also have to include Dolly Parton in any list of pure voices. Her original version of I Will Always Love You is just so effortlessly sweet - and washes away the hideous rendition that was put out by that moaning minnie Whitney Houston.
