Posted June 26, 200817 yr Client: Heinz Deli Mayo There were no end of adverts full of technical wizardry that could have been 'Pick of the Week', this week. But it's this new work for Heinz mayonnaise that's been hitting the headlines. The first ad for the food manufacturer since AMV BBDO won the account from McCann Erickson, there have been almost 200 compliants made to the advertising watchdog. And what has sparked this? Gratuitous sex and violence? No, rather a seemingly affectionate and even comic kiss - and not even involving tongues. The only controversial thing is that the kiss is between two men acting out a typical domestic family scene between husband and wife. The Adverting Standards Association has received 175 complaints the ad, with some complainants saying the ad was "offensive" and that it was "inappropriate to see two men kissing". Other grievances include that the ad was "unsuitable to be seen by children" and raised the difficult problem of parents having to discuss the issue of same-sex relationships with young viewers. Launched last week and set to run for a further four, more complaints are sure to follow. The ASA has not yet decided whether to investigate the TV ad. The Heinz Deli Mayo ad falls foul of Ofcom's TV ad restrictions relating to products that are high in fat, salt and sugar and as a result carries an 'ex-kids' restriction, meaning it cannot be shown in or around children's programming. See it here and decide how controversial it is for yourself. http://www.utalkmarketing.com/Pages/Creati...mp;Title=Editor
June 26, 200817 yr Ugh these conservative idiots really do annoy me. Kids will see it elsewhere anyway, not like you cant hide it away as if it doesnt exist. Ffs! America the land of freedom - dont think so.
June 26, 200817 yr It is parents trying to shield children from the occurance of same-sex relationships which results in homophobic attitudes. <_<
June 26, 200817 yr Why do people always moan about silly things some people need to get a life i mean who has time to complain anyway?
June 26, 200817 yr lol the comments on youtube are so predictable. "i'm glad its been removed, 2 men kissing in perverted", "it goes against God", "its a sin", blah blah blah. Some people need to be smacked across the face and take a big bite out of reality
June 26, 200817 yr The fact that 200 people actually complained against this sickens me. Utter narrow minded bast*rds <_>
June 26, 200817 yr kAKYpUo18wU Yeah, that's like WELL offensive. Idiots  Ooooh I saw this on TV the other day. It made me laugh.
June 26, 200817 yr There really is nothing offensive about it imo. ["Straight home from work sweet cheeks" D': ] I watched it and found it funny |= but I knew it'd be controversial, people claim to be accepting of gays, but the reality of things is far different..
June 26, 200817 yr When I first saw this advert I wasn't shocked by it, but I just knew there'd probably be complaints sent in about it being shown so it seemed like a bit of a risky advert to show from the start. If things were different I wouldn't have even had those thoughts, I don't see why this advert should be banned from TV. They're probably going to ban it for "advertising a fatty product" but it's clearly for another reason.
June 27, 200816 yr You know, I had thought that we might have progressed from this sort of narrow-minded bullsh!t..... Clearly not.... It's pretty lame to complain about something that's so innocuous when there are far more offensive ads on telly which treat women like mindless sexual objects..... What's that teaching children....? -_-
June 27, 200816 yr ^ I agree! Like you have adverts like nuts, FHM etc how come that is acceptable? I haven't seen it and college computer won't let it work for some reason. Anyway I think this is ridiculous, children need to learn about different relationships and everything, and shielding them from such a thing is silly, that's how children grow up to think it's wrong, and they end up bullying those who are gay, because they have been brought up to think it's wrong and disgusting, I hope that makes sense. Because I haven't seen the advert yet. Edited June 27, 200816 yr by Lyricaldreamer
June 27, 200816 yr This doesn't surprise me It is only in the last 5 or 10 years that homosexuality has become more acceptable among society and that is more with younger people whereas a lot of older people (50+ etc) it is still considered a vile and immoral practice, younger people I talk to accept homosexuality but 50+ people I talk to in general despise it so I am guessing the complaints will have come from the older generations, Alf Garnett is still alive and well in this country so it is going to take another 20-30 years before homosexuality is universally accepted in this country
June 27, 200816 yr Remind me again what year we're in. I thought we were in 2008, but I was obviously wrong.
June 27, 200816 yr I saw this advert and thought nothing of it really. It is sickening that people find this offensive
June 27, 200816 yr Author the problem is both Britain and America seem to like having narrow minded bigots in power - we've had Thatcher, America's had Reagan and the 2 Bush disasters.... and with the resurgence in popularity for the right wing brigade, and the God-squad seeming to run America again - it's little wonder society's going backwards and not forwards. If it were the 50s, there'd be the very same argument if two black people were seen kissing..... hard to believe these days - but true. Actually, not so hard to believe when you see the massive fuss being made right now because America may have - gasp - a black president. I mean... so what?
June 27, 200816 yr In a society which is supposedly changing and leaving these sorts of attitudes behind... they really shouldn't be pandering to the demands of these narrow-minded bigots. So 175 people complained... let them stew. It's about time they woke up and smelled the coffee.
June 27, 200816 yr Author what pisses me off is that when the gay support groups shout off about things like this, they get slated to the ground for being reactionary and for trying to, er... ram homosexuality down people's throats. I mean - how dare they try to stick up for themselves, eh? I'm all for complaining about religious pogrammes littering my television screen every Sunday - this, to me, is far, far more offensive than seeing a same-sex couple expressing love for each other in a totally innocent, harmless advert. There's already an online campaign about this - feel free to complain to Heinz ;) http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-8088.html Their phone number is 0800 528 5757 - as the article says - I wonder if Heinz will be as quick to reinstate the ad if more than 200 people ring up to tell them, actually, no, we're not offended. At all.

Edited June 27, 200816 yr by Tim Barnes
June 27, 200816 yr I don't see it as.. 'un-normal'?; but sometimes I just find it hard to understand it. But that's never a problem, and plus something like that (the advert) is funny, . Bloody Britain!
