Some people on other forums seem to be annoyed she's complaining about the 90% pay cut ... £900,000 was far too much for her to be paid for the show, but a 90% cut is such a slap in the face, especially after 26 years of loyalty to the show. She did right to leave, and this should be the end of the show.

So does 90% cut mean £90,000? Or almost half? Either way thats quite a lot, i wouldn't complain at £90,000 but looking at other presenters' saleries i'm sure Carol Vorderman would

She was on 900,000, and a 90% cut would take her down to 90,000. But bear in mind that of 900,000 she loses 30% to tax, probably another 30% to agents and management fees, leaving her with about 300,000. Still a lot of money, but nothing like the million quid people think she earns.

I'd do that, or any, job for 90,000, but to her it's probably not a lot of money at all, and probably not worth her time staying for IMO. It doesn't matter to me that she can afford to take the cut, she shouldn't HAVE to take 90% off her salary just because they want her to.

tbh i think she was overpaid, but as she volunteered to take a 30% cut in line with the programmes 30% cut in funding, that must have been most fair...

One thing I will say about Carol is that I lost a hell of a lot of respect and goodwill for her when she advertised those dodgy loan deals on TV.

Plus as her job is about Maths, then why don't Channel 4 look up a certain someone who scored the highest score in A Level Mathematics results in the UK in a particular year (thanks to the Richard & Judy show for reminding me of that fact) who has subsequently gone on to be famous, looks great in front of the camera and has co-hosted TV shows:

I believe, as a Myleene fan, that she's already been widely touted as Carol, or even Des', replacement. Especially by Richard Whitely's widow who said "they'll probably get Myleene Klass, she's on everything else" ... sorry?! Is it her fault people want her to present their shows?! Just because she's ace 8)

Oh, and that's one of my favourite Myleene pics ever :D

I can see Myleene in the role in a professional capacity, but I can't see her doing it realistically, among everything else in her schedule, and having to travel to and from Yorkshire to film every day with a baby!

I heard on Radio 1 yesterday that Myleen was actually being lined up :o

And to all you people complaining about Carol not wanting £90,000 a year... yes that's a hell of alot of money and yes she was overpaid but lets put it this way... if you were doing a job for 26 years, you'd shown loyalty and dedication for that amount of time and your bosses just said "take a 90% pay cut or leave" you arent gonna want to stay in that position are you. I'm fully behind Carol on this one and i hope Countdown comes to an end :(

She was marvellous at maths but hardly worth what she was getting paid.

The show itself is past it's sellby date after nearly 26 years and never had a re-vamp except for the studio sets.

It should have finished when R.W. passed away.

I'd love the chance to earn £90K a year just answering a few maths questions.

id be behind carol on her decision people forget loyalty very quickly and loyalty should never be forgotten,,,she may have been over paid but look at jonathon ross and many more,,most of themn are over paid,,,i cant see countdown lasting much longer as with presenters now coming and going and carol now going it will lose its appeal to the loyal countdown viewers

it will be rather interesting (that is if the owner of the format doesn't pull it first) who replaces her and what their WAGE is. Can't see Myleene on a £90k wage for a time consuming job

Sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling is to be the new Countdown host when the show begins a fresh series in January.

He will be joined by Rachel Riley, an Oxford graduate who replaces Carole Vorderman as the long-running quiz show's resident mathematician.

Stelling became a cult figure following his stint on Soccer Saturday on Sky. He said yesterday that he was delighted to join the Channel 4 programme and follow in the footsteps of previous hosts Richard Whiteley, Des Lynam and Des O'Connor. Earlier this year, he was named sports broadcaster of the year by journalists for the third successive time.

He will continue to present Sky's Gillette Soccer Saturday and live Carling Cup and Champions League football.

Riley, 22, who went to Oriel College, was chosen from more than 1,000 applicants by auditions in which they conducted an interview and solved problems. The final choice was from a shortlist of six who took a screen test solving numerical conundrums. She said: "There's only one cool maths job around and I was lucky enough to get it so I'm absolutely thrilled."

Cambridge graduate Vorderman and presenter O'Connor recorded their final programme earlier this month, and it is due to air in December.

Countdown was the first show broadcast on Channel 4 when it was launched in November 1982. Vorderman has spent 26 years on it, while O'Connor joined in January 2007, replacing Lynam, who stepped in as anchor following the death of Whiteley.

The end of Countdown?! It's now going to be worth watching again!!

I NEVER watch Countdown, but I might tune in from time to time now. Jeff Stelling is an absolute legend.
The end of Countdown :(

Hopefully - it's well past its sell-by date.

Also ITV should scrap the terrible Family Fortunes
