Guardian biography

Iglu & Hartly are the missing link between the boorish funk-rock of Red Hot Chili Peppers and the cosmic synth-pop of Flaming Lips: they're Flaming Chili Peppers, they're Red Hot Lips, they're five Kiedis-ripped hunks from Los Angeles who caused a bit of a commotion at this year's SXSW festival, and they still haven't got a long-term, worldwide record deal. Despite their on-paper jarring fusion of opposites, somehow their songs work: great big synthed-up rock anthems with nasal semi-sung, semi-rapped vocals that have been described as "like Wayne Coyne producing Van Halen and letting the Beastie Boys front the band". It's pop-rap or hip-pop - no, it's crunked-up MOR metal! - and somebody obviously believes in them because they're currently holed up in a recording studio working on their debut album with Mark Needham (the Killers, Bloc Party, Fleetwood Mac) trying to amass as many massive dance-rock anthems as they can before another somebody decides to invent the term "indie yacht-rock". It has already been said that Iglu & Hartly are really just one Jo Whiley play and/or well-received televised festival appearance away from becoming one of the summer's success stories. They certainly look the part: imagine Flea and co at that moment just before it occurred that it might be a fun idea to wander around LA in broad daylight with tube socks on their cocks. They do the sweaty tops-off max-power high-energy audience-involvement thing live, the singer's voice is so nasal that Marshall Mathers is considering suing, Vicks are considering a promo team-up. Oh, and they've got a song about pyjamas called The Pyjama Song that features whistling and makes you want to go to bed extra early so you can, you know, participate in the fun.

'In This City'

They seem quite good. Maybe like MGMT without all of the electroness. 'In This City' is very good. :o

They're well good. Perfect sort of mix between indie and hip-hop. In This City is the best track they've done to date, I remember when I first heard it, and I thought it'd do really well in the UK if it got the right backing. So i'm hoping they will do really well. If you like In This City then check out their other stuff on MySpace. It's been months since I last checked it, but last time I went on it they a few tracks up on there, most of which had a similar flavour to ITC.

I'm loving In This City at the moment. Heard it on radio 1 a few days ago and hopefully it'll be a big hit!

And I agree, I think it's nice to have a band between a few genres, not just restricted into one :D

Yeah they're quite good; a little bit cheesy but still good. I'm not expecting much from the album though tbh.

Being on a Major and certain-radio 1 playlisting they should break through.

The video's on The Box now.

I think this track could become pretty huge actually... but normally whenever I say that about a track, it flops on its arse haha.

Not too sure about them at the moment - maybe if they left that hip-hop part out they would be much better

- they sound alright until that point when the spirit is like a 'Limp Bizkit doing a Pet Shop Boy' stenching up the place with a pass the the next Gym Class Heroes party....

think best to stick to MGMT imo...

I LOVE In This City!

I really hope it manages to reach the Top 40. Does anyone know when it will be released on iTunes yet?

It's been released on iTunes and debuts at number 50 :o

:w00t:

I posted a link to them about a week ago in the TT forum (there was a short article in the NME online about them and Take That - probably pants). I'd never heard of them before. Anwyay - I've listened to the song a few times now and I think its a great little number. Although to me they sound like a cross between McFly and Wheatus.

A re-release of 'Violent and Young' is the next single. I still can't quite fathom why 'In This City' is doing so well. It's not very mainstream or very catchy. Odd :s

Absolutely horrible...although he has a similar register to Wayne Coyne he has absolutely none of his charm.

'In this City' is unlistenable gash.

Although to me they sound like a cross between McFly and Wheatus.

i would say they sound like a synthpop version of Red Light Company..or somewhere between Red Light Company and the flaming lips...i dont mind 'In this City' until the rap comes in - which is terrible...but then again if they are supposed to sound like some dreadful synthpop band from the 1980s i guess this is very apt as i guess this is what george micheal would do

Red Light Company - With Lights Out

Should we take bets on when they become so unfashionable they get moved to pop  - i'd give it two weeks if the nme is anything to go by

Okay, being honest. 'Lies' is pretty good, although just by the mere fact that it's buy McFly makes it unbearable to listen to. The faux-rock voice, this new punk/indie we're cool look, their fanbase, the fact that it IS Mcfly and just everything about them.

If it was song by Muse, then it would be cool. But Mcfly? It's pretty embarrasing.

and if it was by Iglu & Hartly....

Iglu & Hartly

Crazy Town

page 48 of this weeks NME - Iglu & Hartly gets 2/10

page 45 of this weeks NME - McFly gets 5/10...and yes Iglu & Hartly doexhume the corpse of early '00s clowns crazy town....stick with McFly...

This is a great song, really catchy. Although it's blatantly a pop song I think...

Given by how this is doing on iTunes, I expect this will easily make the top 5 this week. :D

I must say when I first saw Radio 1 were bumming 'In This City' before hearing it I didn't really have high hopes but it is frickin brilliant. I am so looking forward to getting this album now as I think ITC is one of the best songs of the year and far outstrips any Oasis/Kooks/S4Gs and all that garbage.

Oh god. The album could be the worse thing I've ever heard. :| What a MESS. Really REALLY bad.
Is it a surprise? In This City is one of the worst songs of 2008 imo.
