Sir Cliff Richard has launched a campaign to make chart history by returning to the number one spot.

The veteran star has had chart-topping hits in five decades, from the 1950s to the 1990s, and now wants six in a row.

A new song, Thank You For A Lifetime, is being released next month to mark the 50th anniversary of his first hit.

He said: "I may be greedy, but to notch up a number one after 50 years would be just fantastic. I've got the song, I can only hope for the support."

Sir Cliff's first UK hit, Move It, reached number two in September 1958.

Living Doll was his first number one the following year, and he has since had 13 further best-sellers. The last was The Millennium Prayer in 1999.

Sir Cliff has had 14 number one singles in total between 1959-1999

Thank You For A Lifetime will be released on 8 September and a message on Sir Cliff's official website urged all fans to buy it.

"With the singles market gradually dying, and changes to singles charts, this could be the last chance for Cliff to achieve his 'sixth decade' ambition," it said.

The single will be backed by a previously "lost" track, Mobile Alabama School Leaving Hullabaloo.

It was recorded in 1977 but Sir Cliff has no recollection of the session. It was mis-filed in the archives and has only just been unearthed.

As well as being the B-side on the single, it will appear on an eight-disc retrospective that is also due out next month.

Sir Cliff is expected to launch a major publicity drive around the releases, with an autobiography to be published at the same time.

Thank You For A Lifetime will be available over the counter only at Woolworths, who have decided to make an exception to their recent decision not to stock singles. It will also be on sale as a download

This work. What with there being a 'lost' track on there and all of Cliff's fans out in force because of the hype machine, I can see this being No 1 for sure. A bit unfair that it'll be the only single available at Woolies, but those seem to be the rules these days. Of course, having not heard the song yet, I'm not sure if it'll be any good or not or even if he'll make a video to accompany it, but you can be sure that his army of wrinklies will preserve his precious record of being the only artist to top the chart every decade from the 90's -_-

 I would love to see Cliff do it. I enjoy Cliffs music from his solo material to that with The Shadows & The Drifters :) I have his greatest hits, as i do many other retro artists. Any artist who can notch up the success that he has done despite constant knocks from all areas deserves this accolade. Plus, unlike many artists of today he has made it on merit ^_^ not through media publication, constant airplay on radio stations or cable channels but through constant hard work. I haven't heard it yet, but i wish him every success in achieving this and i'm not a wrinkly

Are you sure? I think you stay the bath too long.. ^_^

Katie Melua was only available in Tesco.

Cliff would probably do better, if he waited until December. I don`t think a Number One, is even possible at this point.

LOL, Shame that his songs arn't actually very good though.

I agree.

It could be like the late 1950s all over again, considering this single is coming out on September 1st:

ELVIS PRESLEY - Baby Let's Play House (Spankox Re:Version)

.... Or maybe the 1960s what with a certain PaulMcCartney very recently leaking the "unfinished version" of the fabled 3rd & final track reworked in 1995 (after Free As A Bird & Real Love) of a 1978 John Lennon demo & the "imminent" release of the digitally remastered Beatles back catalogue onto the digital download market, and the fact that limited edition Beatles iPods have been commissioned (hopefully in time for the lucrative Xmas market).

THE BEATLES - Now And Then (1995 version)

I don't agree with his comment of the singles market 'dying' OK CD singles maybe, but the overall market is going strong, Cliff Richard has a lot of bitterness towards modern music I have noticed over recent years! <_<
I doubt Cliff Richard will do that well to be honest. The singles market has changed so much in the last few years. The majority of his buyers are likely to be older people and they will probably opt for the album instead of the single. It will probably go top10 though due to the publicity surrounding it.
Cliff has also had No1 albums in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, a feat only just equalled by ABBA (70's, 80's, 90's and 00's)!

He will not sell downloads, a fatal problem in todays market.

This campaign will bring 50,000 of "Generation Grey" out to Woolworths in droves - just you watch! A dead cert for #1.

EDIT: As long as it's sensibly priced!!

Move It was his best single I reckon, I've just realised how much Cristiano Ronaldo looks like young

Cliff.

It is a bit desperate isnt it?

I know Cliff has been going on for a while, but this seems to stink of publicity stunt to mark the 50th anniversary of his career.

"Wired For Sound" is his best song, despite the very hilarious video with the people in Power Rangers suits on rollerskates :D

But will they be able to reach there on their zimmer frames within the necessary 7 days? :)

A bit harsh, but on any given day in my town, you're at serious risk of being mown down by dozens of these whizzing past you

at great speed.

Well it would be a very good achievment but tbh his songs are so painfully awful :(

I don't think he has a chance at all unless there's really massive promotion for the track.

It looks like a selfish scheme and I hope he doesn't achieve it.

Let ABBA stay with the #1 feat of 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's.
