August 26, 200816 yr I must say that I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to BRITISH history, all I was taught was about American Independence and the Slave Trade which although massively interesting and important to today is not necessarily what I'd choose to learn. I think kids do know a fair bit about the WWs though, this is one area which I think British students do get taught thoroughly in.
August 26, 200816 yr From my experience, English people know very little of the history of Scotland, Wales or Ireland. A lot of English people I've seen know bugger all about English history! Norma
August 26, 200816 yr Kids learn NOTHING like that in school nowadays. It's all modern history that we learn in school now, and that's probably because it's easier to structure an argument, which makes it easier for the exam boards to draw up specifications etc. ...
August 27, 200816 yr Kids learn NOTHING like that in school nowadays. Which is totally WRONG..... Just proves what a joke the so-called "education" system is nowadays..... -_- In my school, "History" classes went as far as the First and Second World Wars, and that was it... I learned about modern history in my Modern Studies classes which looked Post WW2 Britain, focussing more on the Political elements and the differences between Capitalist and Communist ideologies, Warsaw Pact, the UN, NATO, The Marshall Aid plan, the Arms Race, etc... History was History.... If all you're learning is the modern stuff then it sure as hell aint learning History, and should not be referred to as such IMO.....
August 27, 200816 yr Most of the history I know comes from books I've read long after leaving school. I always hated history at school and couldn't see the point in learning it. I've found it far more interesting - and easier to see how it all fits together - by starting with something fairly modern and working backwards.

There's different specifications for different exam boards, but i've never learned about any of the Monarchy or anything in Britain. At A-Level it's different as you can do early Modern (which I think covers Kings and Queen etc.) too. But even in Modern History, for this year Edexcel have changed the specification and students will be learning about the Gulf War for one module...
August 27, 200816 yr i hated history at school. I did the Jacobite's at primary school, then the Scottish wars of independence in 2nd year along with a load of Scottish bias pish. WW2 was/is Standard Grade stuff
