(The top albums, are compiled by stores and download sites, up to and including Wednesday) The top 20 Artist albums, can be seen on Chart Show TV, on Sunday at 2.30pm. Now we go back to August 1968. There is a reason for this. This week in 1968, the BBC Chart (featured on Radio 1, and Top Of The Pops) had a three-way tie at number one. With Herb Alpert/Bee Gees/Beach Boys. In those days the BBC chart was an average chart, based on findings in Melody Maker/NME/Record Mirror. There was no Official Chart then (honest). So, I thought if we take in the findings from the EMI charts, that week, we can find out what actually was the top selling single that week. So, first let`s look at the albums in 1968... w/k beginning 28th Aug 1968 01 01 BOOKENDS - SIMON AND GARFUNKEL 02 02 DELILAH - TOM JONES 03 04 GREATEST HITS - HOLLIES 04 06 WHEELS ON FIRE - CREAM 05 04 A MAN WITHOUT LOVE - ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK 06 07 IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD - MOODY BLUES 07 08 BARE WIRES - JOHN MAYALL 08 09 SOUND OF MUSIC - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK 09 05 CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN - ARTHUR BROWN 10 10 JUNGLE BOOK - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK Only a top 10 album chart in 1968. SIMON AND GARFUNKEL reigning supreme. TOM JONES vs ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK...On this occasion TOM JONES won, with a charttopping LP. The CREAM album was available both as a single LP, and a double LP. The double was more popular, featuring the many talents of ERIC CLAPTON, and GINGER BAKER etc. The MOODY BLUES featured the single "VOICES IN THE SKY", and kept JUSTIN HAYWARD/JOHN LODGE and Co, going. JOHN MAYALL was doing great...we all remember his Blues Breakers, don`t we? ARTHUR BROWN set himself on fire, on TOP OF THE POPS, with the single, but only got one single hit. Both the SOUND OF MUSIC, and JUNGLE BOOK kept the Soundtracks busy. "The hills were alive, with the Bare Necessities"!! Album bubbler of the week was "BOOGIE WITH CANNED HEAT", and provided 2 hit singles for the group, as well as the top 10 album, itself. Not many followed the album chart in `68, least of all...the BBC! Here are EMI`s top 30 singles for August 1968... 01 03 THIS GUY`S IN LOVE WITH YOU - HERB ALPERT 02 05 DO IT AGAIN - BEACH BOYS 03 08 I`VE GOTTA GET A MESSAGE TO YOU - BEE GEES 04 04 HELP YOURSELF - TOM JONES 05 01 MONY MONY - TOMMY JAMES AND THE SHONDELLS 06 02 FIRE - CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN 07 16 I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER - ARETHA FRANKLIN 08 12 HIGH IN THE SKY - AMEN CORNER 09 06 SUNSHINE GIRL - HERMAN`S HERMITS 10 11 DANCE TO THE MUSIC - SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE 11 18 HOLD ME TIGHT - JOHNNY NASH 12 07 I CLOSE MY EYES AND COUNT TO TEN - DUSTY SPRINGFIELD 13 13 KEEP ON - BRUCE CHANNEL 14 17 ON THE ROAD AGAIN - CANNED HEAT 15 09 I PRETEND - DES O` CONNER 16 10 MRS ROBINSON - SIMON AND GARFUNKEL 17 14 DAYS - KINKS 18 26 DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME - MAMA CASS 19 15 LAST NIGHT IN SOHO - DAVE DEE DOZY BEAKY MICK AND TICH 20 22 HARD TO HANDLE - OTIS REDDING 21 24 YOUR TIME HASN`T COME YET BABY - ELVIS PRESLEY 22 28 LADY WILLPOWER - UNION GAP 23 NE JESAMINE - CASUALS 24 19 THE UNIVERSAL - SMALL FACES 25 27 DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME - ANITA HARRIS 26 20 MACARTHUR PARK - RICHARD HARRIS 27 NE AMERICA - THE NICE 28 30 VOICES IN THE SKY - MOODY BLUES 29 23 SON OF HICKORY HOLLER`S TRAMP - O.C. SMITH 30 NE ELEANOR RIGBY - RAY CHARLES That solve`s the confusion, I think...BBC had the 3 way tie, Melody Maker had Herb Alpert, at the top, as did EMI, and NME had Tom Jones, at the top. So, it must have been Herb Alpert, not the Beach Boys or Tom Jones. Extraordinarily on the BBC Top 30, they had the BEE GEES in the 3 way tie, but they were not number one, on any chart that week! Big falls for TOMMY JAMES, and ARTHUR BROWN...Arthur did not top the EMI top 30, nor the BBC Chart. A big star like "the Queen of Soul" (ARETHA FRANKLIN) never ever got a top 3 hit in the UK. AMEN CORNER got their 2nd top 10 hit, with the lead of ANDY FAIRWEATHER-LOW, who of course, got the very first Official number one, in Feb 1969. HERMAN`S HERMITS with the lead of PETER NOONE was still going 4 years after their first hit. PETER NOONE himself also starred in CORONATION STREET. SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE had their only top ten single. JOHNNY NASH had his first. DUSTY SPRINGFIELD had one more left. BRUCE CHANNEL gave us a touch of dance, 6 years after his last hit. DES O` CONNER was not number one, on the EMI, BBC, MELODY MAKER, or NME CHART. Thank God!! SIMON AND GARFUNKEL gave us the GRADUATE, and that brought us MRS ROBINSON. THE KINKS gave us the original of "DAYS" (KIRSTY MACOLL circa 1989). MAMA CASS vs ANITA HARRIS...I would say that our own Anita, gave us the best version, but the general public don`t agree, although MAMA CASS did not get into the top 10. DAVE DEE and CO, had their last top 10 hit, and best! OTIS REDDING was tragedically killed in Dec 1967 in a plane crash, but here he was still doing great with his songs. ELVIS and YOUR TIME HASN`T COME YET BABY was the story of a young girl, growing up...it never gets played today. The SMALL FACES and THE UNIVERSAL isn`t heard much either. The CASUALS struck with a first, but found it hard to follow up, when they did "TOY". THE NICE gave us the classic "AMERICA". RICHARD HARRIS the actor...proved he could sing, and one of the longest records recorded "MACARTHUR PARK", was born. O.C. SMITH always struggled with hits. His "LITTLE GREEN APPLES", proved greater sucess for ROGER MILLER (who took it to 21, on the EMI top 30). THE SON OF HICKORY HOLLER`S TRAMP was O.C`s only top 20 hit, and he had to wait until 1977, before he troubled the charts again with "TOGETHER". RAY CHARLES sang the BEATLES "ELEANOR RIGBY", and got no higher than 30. (The hits of 1968, were compiled by sales/average figures by EMI 1968). Hang on for Dave`s finish, with the latest top 50 selling singles....
August 22, 200816 yr Ok, thanks Trevs. 1968, my favourite year. Even if it were for switching on Top Of The Pops, on Thurs 29th Aug, for a trio of Number Ones. "It`s Number One, it`s Top Of The Pops x 3! Here come the top physicals then: w/k ended 29th Aug 2008 01 01 Verve 02 ne The Automatic 03 02 Kid Rock 04 ne Gabriella Cilmi - Save The Lies 05 ne Fratellis 06 04 Ironik 07 05 Jordin Sparks 08 ne Taio Cruz 09 03 Bloc Party 10 07 Nelly 11 09 Madonna 12 08 Madcon 13 06 Noah And The Whale 14 10 Ne Yo 15 11 Dizzee Rascal 16 15 Script 17 16 Basshunter 18 12 Solange 19 14 Saturdays 20 17 Ting Tings - Shut Up etc. Verve are getting a challenge from the Automatic, who have been switching places all week. Many physical releases were held back this week, including Glas Vegas, and Alphabeat. So, the physical top 20, only has 4 new entries. (The top physical singles compiled by all major stockists, across the uk, for DTR). Here is the combined top 50 physicals/downloads Note: problems with HMV`s Downloads site, have caused a slight problem with data. 50 46 4 MINUTES - MADONNA 43) =42 49 45 IT`S NOT ABOUT ME - SCOUTING FOR GIRLS 42) =44 48 44 CRY FOR YOU - SEPTEMBER 41) =43 47 33 BECAUSE THE NIGHT - CASCADA 40) =41 46 41 WEARING MY ROLEX - WILEY 39) =42 45 37 DISCO LIGHTS - ULTRABEAT 38) =38 44 27 HOMETOWN GLORY - ADELE 37) =34 43 43 AMERICAN BOY - ESTELLE 36) =40 42 39 PHOTOGRAPH - NICKELBACK 35) =39 41 48 BOYFRIEND - ALPHABEAT - =bubbler 40 42 LOW - FLO RIDA 34) =37 39 38 MOVING MOUNTAINS - USHER 33) =35 38 29 BADITUDE - SPOON AND CO. 32) =33 37 NE CRAZY WORLD - J. Katy pulls off a third week. Reminding me about the boy who was very confused about his sexuality..He says to his father, "Dad I think, i`m a lesbian".."Oh", says the father "What do you mean,son?".."Well", says the boy "I fancy girls"!!!!! Anyway this week outside the top 50 are: Mainly Metallica! THE DAY THAT NEVER COMES is on the verge of hitting the top 50, as NOTHING ELSE MATTERS, and ENTER SANDMAN are close behind!! Back up for Lynryd Skynryd. Flo Rida is IN THE AYER, Colbie Caillat, Take That are all in the top 60, as MERCY and Duffy falls just outside the top 50 after 27 weeks. The top 70 brings us Ray J, Nas, and Miley Cyrus. Not forgetting ONE and Metallica, also in the top 75, and it`s a very minor hit for Fratellis. I expect the Automatic will be in the top 15, for Sunday, and will take the physical number one back, from the Verve. Next week look out for singles from: PAUL WELLER, GLAS VEGAS..Both LITTLE JACKIE and ALPHABEAT go physical, along with MILEY CYRUS. There are also physicals from SUBWAYS, MYSTERY JETS, CITY GIRLS, WILL I. AM, BLACKOUT CREW, and HAMFATTER. New albums come from: THE AUTOMATIC, SLIPKNOT, VERVE, GAME, EVA CASSIDY, DRAGON FORCE, JOE BONAMASSA, and TEDDY THOMPSON. Compilations come via CREAMFIELDS 10 YEARS OF, BACK TO 95, LIVING FOR THE WEEKEND, and SHAPESHIFTERS IN THE HOUSE. NOTE: Our singles chart is not the Official chart. It is based on Chart Show tv`s chart, but brought up to date with added sales info. The Chart Show Top 40, can be seen Saturday mornings, in the new 10am - 1pm time slot (Sky Channel 365). ;) And "The Chart Show", is on between 4 and 5pm, on Saturdays, and Mondays at 7pm. For everyone that misses "Top Of The Pops". "The Chart Show", is a bit behind but features such charts as, the Rock Chart, Urban Chart, Dance Chart, Album Chart, and finishes up with the top ten singles. With new releases, along the way too, and the Video Vault. Just like the original Chart Show 1986 - 1998 (Which incidently, came to an end this very week in 1998. When it started in 1986, for the firts few weeks, it featured the Network Chart positions. Then, it was a Thurs - Weds compiled chart. Remember the early number ones (that didn`t make it on the Radio One chart), such as "Rain Or Shine" from Five Star? Some problems with HMV this week, that may affect the download side of things. Not much though, because iTunes is, of course the biggest download site. For every 5,000 sold on iTunes, HMV only pull in 500.
August 22, 200816 yr I take it... if Oasis were elgible for the chart they would be at No.10. I think Alphabeat might just sneak in by Sunday. And finally can I put a request for a retro for the week ending of 22 September 1979, this milestone marks my 30th Anniversary of writing down the charts, I know... how sad is that

On the info, I collected together. I`ll make a note, for Trevs on 1979. Of course 1979, and 2nd Sept, was the first time Tony Blackburn did the top 40 on Radio One..Sensational!!!!
August 22, 200816 yr Hopefully Alphabeat will manage to break the top 40 by Sunday, suprused Save The Lies is as high as 32 tbh, though it might end up just clinging to the top 40.
August 23, 200816 yr Dave, do you know the physical sales? It'll be interesting to see how many physical copies were sold of the Verve and the Automatic.
August 23, 200816 yr thanks Dave. 2,500 copies for the number 1 physical is really really bad. :o The ever declining physical. Had the downloads of The Automatic, been added before Tuesday (because iTunes, were a bit behind with the Automatic, until Tues). I think "Steve McQueen", would actually be low top ten, now. Tipping the balance with an extra couple of thousand downloads, but it`s not to be. So, The Automatic will get their peak today, I suspect.
August 23, 200816 yr Katy pulls off a third week. Reminding me about the boy who was very confused about his sexuality..He says to his father, "Dad I think, i`m a lesbian".."Oh", says the father "What do you mean,son?".."Well", says the boy "I fancy girls"!!!!! Where is that story from? Made me laugh...a lot! I sometimes wish downloads didn't count towards the chart, as Bloc party would have been #3 last week, the Verve would have been #1 and the Automatic #1 this week :o Stupid downloads :(

I sometimes wish downloads didn't count towards the chart, as Bloc party would have been #3 last week, the Verve would have been #1 and the Automatic #1 this week :o Stupid downloads :( Without downloads we would have something stupid at No.1 like Scooch or Paris Hilton -_- Thank god for downloads
August 23, 200816 yr Without downloads we would have something stupid at No.1 like Scooch or Paris Hilton -_- Thank god for downloads ...and Westlife and McFly <_<
August 23, 200816 yr Without downloads we would have something stupid at No.1 like Scooch or Paris Hilton -_- Thank god for downloads I wouldn't mind Paris Hilton being #1 :kink: No, but I do see your point and Ben made a good point as well - I wouldn't want Westlife or McFly to have any more #1s than they already have  I was just saying it's a shame that these songs (Bloc Party, the Verve and the Automatic) are doing so well on physicals and haven't done so well overall.
August 23, 200816 yr I was just saying it's a shame that these songs (Bloc Party, the Verve and the Automatic) are doing so well on physicals and haven't done so well overall. I know the feeling, the physical market is dead, most indie acts sell well on 7inch vinyl (limited editions, coloured vinyls etc), but its not enough to get a high entry.

Well I agree, if the new releases would make a bigger impact in the downloads, the chart would be more exciting. I guess lack of promo of new download releases. :(
