Daft Punk - One More Time (hugely hyped and tipped to be #1, missed out against Leann Rimes)

Kylie Minogue - 2 Hearts (a much anticipated comeback from one of the UK's leading chart stars, didnt quite make it)

Dannii Minogue - You Won't Forget About Me (after her hot season with NN, this was expected to give her her first UK #1...)

Alicia Keys - Fallin' (massively hyped but didnt in the end)

Sash! - La Primavera (very much expected to be #1 with this lead single from his 2nd album, after having 3 consecutive #2s)

Truesteppers & Victoria Beckham - Out Of Your Mind (Posh's first solo single, really hyped up, missed out against Spiller)

Britney Spears - Gimme More (new comeback single, greatly received by fans, but it was not to be)

Westlife - What Makes A Man (no more needs to be said, obviously expected to be #1, but not with Bob The Builder around)

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (everyone was expecting this to be #1, but they werent aware of Aqua's chart power)

Dario G - Sunchyme (one of the dance anthems of 97, but no one was expecting Princess Diana to die...and for Elton to release a tribute song)

Girls Aloud - Something Kinda Oooh (their first song truly loved by radio, well received by all the fans, yet didnt make it)

Los Del Rio - Macarena (cheesy tune of the summer, dominating the charts across the world, yet stalled at #2)

Janet Jackson - All For You (everyone was expecting that her comeback with this well received song would give her a chart topping single, limped in at #3)

Leona Lewis - Better In Time (after her hugely popular single BL, this was expected to also reach the top, especially with charity behind it)

name more :)

I so agree about Dannii with You Won't Forget About Me. Everybody thought that was going to #1, it was just such a smash in waiting. I do not have a clue what happened. :(

Also, P!nk with Trouble. Those are the 2 that spring to mind.

I dont like the song but I would say "Kids" by Kylie and Robbie
^^ Did that not make #1? :o
Kids and Soemthing Kinda Ooh, what went wrong with these two. I was so convinced SKO would get to number 1.

Kids didn't make #1?! HOW? :o What on earth was #1 that week, please don't say Steps.

Some of those really should have been #1, especially Daft Punk and Natalie Imbruglia. I think Dario G has the record for the biggest gap between a #1 and #2 single - Sunchyme sold about 100k and would have been #1 any other week, unfortunately Elton John sold over a million!!

Few to add:

Michael Jackson - You Rock My World (his big 'comeback' single just before Martin Bashir ruined his career, just missed out at #2)

The Idols - Happy Xmas (the Pop Idol cast ruin a John Lennon classic, it got to #5 and was brilliantly outsold by Avid Merrion's 'Proper Chrimbo')

The Darkness - Christmas Time (what should have been the Christmas number 1 that year but Mad World outsold it)

Adele - Chasing Pavements (Basshunter of all people stopped this from getting #1!)

A few of Oasis's early songs just missed out too, like Whatever, Roll With It, and Wonderwall. Blur stopped Roll With It, god knows about the other two.

U2 were #1.

I'm glad it missed out, especially if the magnificent OANLT missed out a month earlier.

Me neither, especially how Ja Rule came out of nowhere. Still baffles me...

The most hilarious famous examples I can think of are:

Westlife's What Makes A Man when it was stopped by Bob The Builder,

better still the over-hyped next big thing who were going to be the new Spice Girls and were put together by Simon Cowell (who turned down signing The Spice Girls):

Girl Thing - Last One Standing: Their debut single was ranked at #1 in Woolworths, but it sold nowhere near that limping in at #8.

I dont think Girl Thing were playlisted on Radio 1 if I recall that correctly. Not that it mattered back then, Radio 1 didnt completely control the charts with channels like The Box who promoted songs to equal success.

To be fair to them with 40+ #1s in a year it was probably difficult for them to keep up, plus I'm sure they had more of a snobbish attitude to pure pop music than they have now.

Hmm I dunno. Looking at their playlists from back then, there was a lot more cheesy pop on them. I guess even though they didnt like it, they realised its what people bought and so they had to play it.

Let's see if they had a chance that particular week, here was the top8:

01 NE Kylie Minogue - Spinning Around

02 01 Black Legend - You See The Trouble With Me

03 03 Darude - Sandstorm

04 02 Sonique - It Feels So Good

05 NE David Gray - Babylon

06 NE Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love (2000 remix)

07 NE Damage - Ghetto Romance

08 NE Girl Thing - Last One Standing

They definitely could've done a lot better that week, but it was summertime so it was hard to beat all the dance anthems and Kylie's comeback.

Natalie Imbruglia's Shiver has to be another one.

Was she expected to make #1 with that? Her previous album had bombed and it had been 7 years since she'd had even a top 5 single. To be honest I'd been half expecting it to just miss the top 10.

Like everyone has said so far, Kids not making #1 was a pretty big shock. Robbie WAS at the stage where he could have released a 10 second long fart and made #1, and Kylie was the big comeback kid.

Daft Punk was another one that's been mentioned earlier; it was really massively tipped but no-one saw that LeAnn Rimes coming...

For me, "Outside" by George Michael was a big shock, it had been so hyped up, and as with Daft Punk/LeAnn Rimes, I'm not sure anybody really thought Cher was going to be as big as she was.

Also;

"I Love The Way You Love Me"; it was getting to the point where Cher should have been running out of steam, and Boyzone had been on a roll. Same story with Robbie's "No Regrets".

"Stop"; it was the SPICE GIRLS.

"Caught Out There" - MASSIVELY hyped and promoted prior to the release.

"Me Against The Music" - I can't remember who pipped them, but Madonna and Britney not making #1 together was unthinkable.

"Sacred Trust" - they were the favourites over Girls Aloud weren't they?

I also remember the Sun going ga-ga over "Life Got Cold" claiming it was a surefire #1 and comparing it to Wonderwall
