just thinking... what do you lot think of johnny rottens advert for country life butter?.. has he 'sold out'? or is it a perfectly normal thing for a celeb to do?

is it in conflict with his anarchistic, punk ethics?

John Lydon's got about as much 'punk ethic' as Louis Walsh.... he's the first to deride other people for selling out and selling themselves short... but has anyone had a bigger fall from grace than John Lydon?

He should have died after PiL - at least he'd have spared himself the embarrassment of the past few years.... butter ads, reality shows, wildlife shows and appalling reunion gigs.

i dont agree russ :)

i dont think an old bloke should still hold the same perspectives as he did as a young man. i certainly dont!

That advert is $h!t regardless of who is doing it

oh i quite like it... and johnny shows a penchant for comedic acting!

when he mouths off about other people's lack of ethics or morals or 'punk ethic' - as Lydon tiresomely does again and again and again (read his book - it's bizarrely entertaining)..... then I think he definitely deserves to be pulled up for flogging his own soul....

i havnt read his book.

but pop stars have always been criticised for 'selling out'... ALL have eventually given in and courted popularity/money.

i cant see that lydons antics are any worse then say eric clapton , who left the yardbirds because they were taking the commercial path, only to eventually courting the very same popularity card in order to make money!

was john lennon destined to be an oap 'working class hero' had he lived ?... i think not!

and exactly what IS 'punk ethics'?.. i think that people have a dated image of what/how lydon should be behaving. in fact i emailed mark radcliffe when he had his afternoon show on r1, defending the criticism that some were directing towards lydon for doing the jungle thing... radcliffe thought id made a 'good point, well put' :)

John Lydon has sold out in my eyes because he has proved himself to be something he has been very good & credible at complaining about others previously ..... He is now a hypocrite.

Morrissey very recently interview with Janice Long on BBC 6 Music where he in his own eloquent sardonic way had a go at John Lydon for selling out for £5,000,000 (so that is how much John Lydon thought his credibility was worth because he has completely lost it with me now, or as The Clash's Mick Jones said "Joe Strummer must be laughing his head off somewhere after all the $h!te and abuse he gave us ..... at least we did it for something iconic as Levi's...") to do those awful Country Life butter adverts..... where he ambiguously yet humourously and sarcastically implied that seeing that John Lydon has sold out then maybe he should do the same (seeing as he is a fellow "Irish Blood English Heart" whom has also had a autocation with the lead singer from Bloc Party) and reform The Smiths.

For me I was shocked when he turned up on I'm A Celebrity, but then he maintained his Punk ethos by quitting the show in the last week when he was 1/3 odds on favourite to win.

Now I wish he sold out back then and stayed on to win the show because at least maybe Kerry Katona (the winner in his absence) would not be regarded as a Celebrity today.

I had no problem with him reforming the band to earn some filthy lucre, because he did not pretend the purpose behind it. But I have a huge problem with him attacking musicians for allowing themselves or their music to be used to sell product (I remember him being hilariously vicious towards Moby a few years ago). But now he has sold out on his principles he therefore becomes a hypocrite in my eyes.

I don't know if selling out is the right definition. If someone offered me £5m to advertise butter, would I think twice, nope.

Its easy for us to criticise, but if you were in his shoes...............................

It's funny you ask that because when I saw the advert, it's the first thing I asked myself. I never thought I'd see him doing something like this tbh... especially for butter

This says it all...and why should we champion him for flogging a dead horse (again!) with the Pistols on the nostalgia circuit and criticise him for this. If anything criticise the Country Life butter adverts for having a true icon signed up and failing to use him well at all - the scripts and settings are cack.

I say bring back the animated blokes who sang 'Youneverputabetterbitobutteronyerknife' in the old 80s advert.

maybe they should have an animated butter version of Johnny doing that.

Indeed!

Here they are - I tried to embed it but I assume this board won't allow embedded vids?

thats exactly how i see it.... what would be the point of refusing a huge cash handout?.. cutting off his nose to spite his face! would we be regarding him as some kind of 'hero'?... nope, we couldnt care less.

hypocrit?... maybe, but arnt we allowed to change our minds? i think too many want to imprison this icon in a mythical past.

again i ask 'punk ethics'? exactly what were they?...

i was surprised to see him doing an ad, but it bothers me not...his legacy still remains in tact.

John Lydon for selling out for £5,000,000

hold on a mo..... £5 MILLION? just to advertise BUTTER?... that cannot be right.

Apparently so. Remember this advert is going out across the world and in all media forms (ie. turning up in magazines, internet spirals, etc), not just in the UK (or one country) like a lot of adverts.

Hence you get the likes of Euan McGregor advertise goodness knows what in Japan, yet the advert never gets shown in the UK.

Sold out?! It's a bloody advert. When the wrinkles arrive and the work dries up you need something either to keep the cash coming in or keep your name/face out there. Who cares about selling out? He's so beyond relevant anyway. It's just called getting work.

He's so beyond relevant anyway.

err..... can someone else answer this one?

Well he is, now. Not to say he never was relevant, but he isn't any longer, only his legacy is. That cannot be denied surely?

If he was relevant he wouldn't be stooping to I'm A Celeb or butter ads. But he's not, so he is.

err..... can someone else answer this one?

Well seeing how the "kids of today" seem to be incapable of rebelling against their elders then maybe Jark is actually correct.

Paul Morley recently mused about today's generation of kids "the only way for them to rebel is to conform, because their parents who grew up through the punk, ska, new romantic, new rave, etc movements all rebelled against their elders. So the only for for this generation of kids today to shock their parents is by conforming. They can't take drugs, have under-age sex or make themselves ill on alcohol because their parents have already done it. They can't shock their parents and come out as homosexual or have a mixed race relationship because their parents did it first."

In otherwords its the Absolutely Fabulous syndrome. With this generation being a bunch of Saffron's who want nothing more to be famous and appear on Big Brother & X-Factor (demographically the two most watched shows by under 21s in the UK).

(Incidentally Radio 5 Live reckoned the age group that were complaining most about the decision to take action against Ross & Brand were the 25-34 demographic and not the younger audience, who seem to happy to believe whatever right-wing Rupert Murdoch's media machine tells them).
