'Cradle Of Filth Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder'

Godspeed On The Devil's Thunder is the 8th studio album by English extreme metal band, Cradle Of Filth. It is a concept album, based on the life of the infamous 15th century French nobleman Gilles De Rais, who fought alongside Joan Of Arc and accumulated great wealth before becoming a serial killer, sexual deviant and satanist. The album was released on October 27, 2008 by Roadrunner Records. A special edition containing bonus material has also been released. Once again Doug Bradley provides narration for the album (as with Midian, Nymphetamine and Thornography). The title of the album derives from a valediction vocalist Dani Filth once used to sign a letter. The album is produced by Sabbat guitarist Andy Sneap, who previously worked with COF while mixing the band's 2006 album, Thornography. The band's official message boards recently revealed parts of an interview with guitarist Paul Allender conducted by MediaMatinQuebec: ''We already have four new songs ready and I have to say that they are... Much faster than the sounds on Thornography. They sound like old COF and a mixture of Midian and Dusk..." the interview goes on to state that the album will be followed by a European and American tour. Dani Filth has described the album as, "our most extreme, dramatic and deeply disturbing album to date. The legends of Gilles De Rais has been given fresh, vampyrical life in this conceptual moisterwerk swathed in pitch-black magic and viciousness unsurpassed in the annals of Cradle history. Screw what our detractors say, everyone who has heard this album has bruised their jaws on the pentagram bejewelled floor." In an interview with Blistering.com Filth revealed that 3 additional songs were recorded during the album sessions. Among them an instrumental piece and a cover of Celtic Frost's 'Into The Crypts Of Rays' on the topic of their absence from the album, Filth has stated that they were taken out so that the album wasn't too long. They'll turn up somewhere. They since appeared on the special edition. The track 'Honey & Sulphur' will be the albums 1st single and has been made available for purchase on the iTunes store. A music video for the song was filmed at the Chislehurste Caves in Kent. Source Wikipedia.

It's business as usual for CoF, a solid album from them again, but not exactly earth-shattering. The sound is somewhat harsher than on previous albums though, slightly going back to the "Dusk...And Her Embrace" days, although, it has to be said "Midian" remains my favourite CoF album...

It is quite heavy and hectic. Probably one of the most harshest albums I have right now. So I thought if I could fall inlove with Within Temptation's 'Enter'. I could fall inlove with this. And it growing on me more and more.. The single choice was also quite great. Seeing that they hardly ever release singles. Is it just me or does Dani seem to be getting creepier by the minute?

I found it quite interesting that CoF did a cover of Celtic Frost's "Into the Crypt of Rays"... Well, I suppose it's appropriate seeing as how the album is about Gilles De Rays.... Yeah, it is a pretty heavy-sounding album... Probably due in no small part to Sabbat-man Andy Sneap's production.... I'd recommend Dimmu Borgir (esp their last three albums) or Emperor if you like CoF actually, a bit of nasty Norwegian Black Metal can be good now and then... Darkthrone, you might want to leave for a while though, even I find them a bit excessive at times....

I think they'll be starting to announce bands for Wacken '09 (legendary German Metal Fest which absolutely sh!ts on Download....) in a few months, wouldn't be at all surprised to see CoF being on that bill....

Dani's getting older, so I guess that's why he seems to be creepy.....

This song disturbed me   .

Disturbing??? Nah, CoF are funny mate... They're really just a Metal version of a Hammer Horror film in a lot of ways.... You know, all vampires, buxom wenches, fake blood, elaborate costumes..... It's musical theatre mate.... And, well, Dani is as camp as Musical Theatre in a lot of ways as well.... If you were to go see CoF live, you'd just see them as entertaining... ;)

Didnt they have a female lead at some stage? I heard that somewhere. If yes Im getting that album asap.

No, she was a backing singer... Sara Jezebel Diva... She does feature prominently on most of CoF's albums though... Liv Kristine did a nice job of doing lead female vocals on "Nymphetamine" though...

Sara has her own Gothic/Metal band now, Angtoria, so she doesn't really show up so much on CoF's albums anymore... Even though she's had Operatic vocal training, a'la Tarja, her vocals are much more restrained in her own band, more like a traditional Female Rock vocalist....

Great. I am quite biased towards the female vocalists. LOL. I think what would be probably one of the most popular tours would be if Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, After Forever, Sirenia etc all went on a combined female metal themed world tour. Their popularity would sky rocket I'm sure. A festival has just been organised in my local city and Maroon 5, One Republic Sugababes etc are all showing up and its not even sold out. Where rock festivals are much more successful. . I havent even seen WT live. How sad.

It would be a fantastic idea actually.... I think basically to really get the bums on seats though (and to ensure you get the biggest venues), get Evanescence to headline.... Lacuna Coil to be special guests, then Within Temptation, Arch Enemy, Nightwish, Tarja (solo), Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves' Eyes, Tristania, After Forever, Sirenia, that Japanese all-female Death Metal band whose name I just cannot remember right now...LOL, Angtoria, The Birthday Massacre....

Such a shame you aint seen WT though... I take it you dont live in London then..... :P

I live in Africa :o but that list is just perfect although I really take back what I said about Epica I'm really loving their album now. Flyleaf would also be quite a headliner seeing they're so big in the US

LOL, my local city has a festival every year that sells out in hours, this year we had RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, Metallica, Tenacious D, Queens of the Stone Age, Serj Tankian, Dropkick Murphys, Pendulum and loads of other amazing bands.

Solid album. It reminds me of a cross between Midian and Damnation and a Day. If you like Cradle of Filth, you should check out Devil Doll. They're not metal, but a lot of the creepy, dark, symphonic, and theatrical aspects of CoF can be traced back to Mr. Doctor and Devil Doll. Dies Irae is a great place to start. Real weird, classy, and interesting stuff.
