You know me too well

I've just realised why the 15 point deduction is actually too much!!

As people have correctly pointed out, each country has 58 points in total to give out...but they won't be giving all of those points to the one country. The biggest advantage any country can give to another country would be 12 points.

In fact, with 19 other countries to vote for, and 58 points to give, on average, a country is giving a potential 3 point advantage to each other country by voting. So in this case, there would be an argument for the deduction only being 3 points.

Then again you could look at it from the point of view that 9 countries will be getting no points at all....and that the 58 points will be divided between 10 countries, giving each of those countries an average of a 5.8 point advantage over the voting country. Therefore it could be argued that a 5-6 point deduction for not voting would be more appropriate.

An extreme would be to say that by voting, a country will be giving one other country a 12 point advantage over themselves, and by not voting, the country will not have that advantage, so a 12 point deduction could be seen as reasonable.

But there is no argument for the 15 point deduction just because each country has 58 points to dish out....nobody would be given a 15 point advantage by any one country, so I don't think it's right to disadvantage any country by 15 points by not voting, especially because some of these countries don't even use Buzzjack any more.

I hope it's not too late for me to make these points!

I agree that 15 point deduction is not proved to be honest, i'd say 5-7 points would be enough.

Dont really understand everything there but i think 15 points is too much. Around 5/6 points would be better.

Hmmm, fair enough. 12 point deduction makes sense in retrospect - it was intended to weight it so that if a country would have been left equal had they given the 12 points to another country would not be left equal, but after thinking about it that is a bit harsh. I don't think 3/6 point deductions would be fair to be honest for the same reasons as you stated (the 12 point advantage).

And this won't apply to the main contest - the aim of the 33% deduction in the main contest is to stop people just submitting and wasting our time by not returning! :P We did have a long discussion about the nature of having stronger punishments for those who have been on recently etc., but they haven't really been needed as since BJSC VIII people seem to have submitted votes on time, apart from semi-finalists who don't really matter in the grand scheme of things - apart from when a certain country tried to anyway after being told the punishment :heehee: The rule is that intentional non-voters get disqualified from the next contest, and non-voting finalists are deducted 33%; and the punishment for this contest will be a flat 12 point deduction for entries of non-voting countries.

ah rightio - Pretty exciting that the results are fresh then
