Posted November 11, 200816 yr http://stereogum.com/archives/santogold-no...nti_034451.html A press release for the mtvU Woodies Awards is a weird place to mine your breaking news, but we do what we can. Yesterday we received a blast from MTV detailing the performers at their annual music-video-for-dorm-rooms award show, including Vampire Weekend featuring Chromeo, the Cool Kids featuring Asher Roth, Lykke Li, and "Santi (formerly known as Santogold)." Formerly known? Well! This is sounding familiar, Dan Snaith. Santogold's birth name is Santi White, so just Santi is no different than what we wind up calling her in our posts anyway. More interesting is what likely precipitated the change. Remember Santo Gold? Of Santo Gold vs. Santogold? Guess there was some merit to his lawsuit after all. To refresh your memory, Santo Rigatuso is a sorta jack-of-all-trades actor/infomercial guy (selling gold chains) who's been out there under the name Santo Gold since '83. He owns santogold.com, and he was not cool with Santi's name appropriation. At least, he was not cool with it enough to file some Lanham Act litigation to defend his good name (i.e. take his cut) after Santogold songs started popping up in every commercial ever. You've just been lawyered! However and in fairness, Santo did beat Santi to the Gold, and Santi did give a damning quote about getting that nickname in an early-stage interview: "My friend who made it up said she got it off an infomercial for cheap gold, and that was it." Case closed, I guess. So Santi has gone the way of the Caribou (FKA Manitoba). Don't worry too much about her though, I'm sure she has her endorsement checks made out to that name anyway. R.I.P., "I Believe In Santogold" publicity photo.
November 11, 200816 yr Well, at least it happened before she gets big - I think she has a real chance to crossover and have chart success soon! I am leaving her as Santogold on my personal chart though

November 30, 200816 yr Well, at least it happened before she gets big - I think she has a real chance to crossover and have chart success soon! I am leaving her as Santogold on my personal chart though  She's had a massive year already. There's more to judging "success" than chart positions o: I don't think I even know a person who DOESN'T know Santogold :s
November 30, 200816 yr Well that be why Jester said 'chart success' as opposed to just 'success'... and plenty of people don't know of her outside of certain circles. There's obviously a way to go before she gets success on the level of somebody like M.I.A.

There's obviously a way to go before she gets success on the level of somebody like M.I.A. My comment was in reference to his use of the phrase "gets big" and the link with "chart success". Which circles don't know Santogold then? Because everyone I know from chav to hipster to trendy to normal person to old person seems to know who she is. She's received proper Radio 1 backing. Big festival slots, big urban fanbase etc As for your comparison to M.I.A. that's like saying Britney Spears isn't as "big" as Madonna. When both are obviously big, just on different scales.

I meant big in chart success terms, as I know she is pretty well known already, but she hasn't had a huge amount of mainsteam exposure yet.
November 30, 200816 yr Not many people I know have heard of M.I.A (except those that listen to Radio 1), let alone Santogold. Santi isn't as good as Santogold but I guess it is her proper name so is a good substitute :P
November 30, 200816 yr Which circles don't know Santogold then? Because everyone I know from chav to hipster to trendy to normal person to old person seems to know who she is. You must know some trendy old people then. I'm the only one in my family who knows of her properly. Well actually my younger brother knows of her because I told him this story and that she's the one who has had her music played on 3 different TV adverts this year. My youngest brother also recognises that "You'll Find A Way" was on a FIFA game but doesn't actually know the artist behind it. The rest of my family and people I know would probably think Santogold is some cheap jewellery company - which is true I guess! It's the same case for M.I.A. as well except one of my brothers knows 'Paper Planes' and 'Jimmy'. I guess we're too uncool.
November 30, 200816 yr When I went to see her earlier this year it was filled with 30 somethings +. I felt really young there: consciously so. I don't know if London is very different from everywhere else or not. Hmm.

Because everyone I know from chav to hipster to trendy to normal person to old person seems to know who she is. and Tom Artrocker as well    (have you read the latest Santogold single review in there???) When I went to see her earlier this year it was filled with 30 somethings +. I felt really young there: consciously so. I don't know if London is very different from everywhere else or not. Hmm. I'm guessing the Q magazine crowd rather than artrocker crowd...tho i'm not too sure as maybe the Q icrowd s actually what the artrocker crowd becomes when they are 40+
