for singles in 2008, you need roughly 15k now to make the top 10 on an average week...it can go as low as 10k or as we have seen, as high as over 26k! I wouldn't have thought we'll ever see another No.1 single sell under 20k...not in the near future anyway...
It also depends on the time of the year, Christmas sales will push the average sales, January to March goes thru a dull period sales could be very low, you can't really put a definitive sales figure, you could have a very dull month anytime.

figures for past years are at http://www.zobbel.de/

At that site choose Selected Chart Statistics on the right hand side of the page (about half way down, under the The Statistics Pages heading). It lists the average sales needed to be at numbers 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 75 from 1991 to 2007.

Some interesting statistics there. Average weekly sales needed to reach numbers 1, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 75 for selective years are:

1993: 68,250 (1) / 28,175 (5) / 17,400 (10) / 10,325 (20) / 5,600 (40) / 2,025 (75)

1998: 140,700 (1) / 53,075 (5) / 32,600 (10) / 17,725 (20) / 7,250 (40) / 1,825 (75)

2003: 70,169 (1) / 23,038 (5) / 13,288 (10) / 6,519 (20) / 2,550 (40) / 731 (75)

2007: 55,363 (1) / 17,881 (5) / 11,331 (10) / 6,444 (20) / 3,388 (40) / 1,706 (75)

I personally think Jan-March is a lot stronger these days. Well it was this year saleswise and songswise and in 2007 too. The summer months seem to be the dried up and boring time on both charts over the past few years.

I agree, it seems that the first 4 months of the year are about fresh new talent (e.g. Duffy, Adele, Ting Tings this year)

and then the last 4 months are about the big comebacks (Britney, Killers, Pink, Girls Aloud etc...)

so the middle 4 months of the year are often filled with artists releasing 2nd/3rd singles from albums, hence not a very strong musical period or sales period...this is certainly true of both 2007 and 2008

Completely agree there. After christmas at the end of last year sales went right up, and never really went back down since then until the summer.
