Perhaps this is more musicals than pop, but Gareth has four songs on a new CD A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe.

You can get the full track-listing on Amazon, but it is essentially the highlights of a live recording of a show put on over the summer to celebrate 25 years of a songwriting duo, including a preview of a forthcoming musical Soho Cinders, which was the bit Gareth featured in along with the brilliant Leanne Jones, who won all the awards for Hairspray.

Here's the promotional blurb ...

SPOONFUL OF STILES & DREWE GALA LIVES ON IN LIVE RECORDING TO BE RELEASED 08/12/08

Following its sell-out success as a gala West End concert in July, A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe will live on in the form of a live highlights recording, released on CD on Monday 8 December 2008.

It features Olivier Award winners Stiles & Drewe themselves, fellow Olivier recipients Joanna Riding, Clive Rowe and Leanne Jones, pop star Gareth Gates and musical theatre stars Julie Atherton, Helena Blackman, Daniel Boys, Richard Dempsey, James Gillan, Alison Jiear, Shona Lindsay, Lisa O’Hare, Caroline Sheen, Scarlett Strallen, Rebecca Thornhill and Oliver Tompsett.

Celebrating 25 years of songwriting by composer George Stiles and lyricist Anthony Drewe, A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe includes a wealth of material from their shows Honk!, Just So, Peter Pan and Mary Poppins, as well as previously unrecorded material and six exclusive tracks from their upcoming show, Soho Cinders, an alternative gay fairytale based on the Cinderella story.

A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe was produced by Neil Eckersley and Paul Spicer for Speckulation Entertainment with creative direction by Paul Spicer, musical supervision by George Stiles and artistic supervision by Anthony Drewe. Recorded live at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Sunday 6 July 2008, the recording is released by Speckulation Entertainment and produced by George Stiles.

Thanks to generosity of all involved in A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe, all profits from the recording will go to Mercury Musical Developments, a British charity nurturing new musical theatre writing.

For further details and to purchase at the special pre-release price of £10.00 plus postage and packing (RRP £12.99), visit www.spoonfulcd.com no later than Sunday 7 December 2008. It will also be available on Amazon at www.amazon.co.uk and Dress Circle at www.dresscircle.co.uk

I was there on the night and loved the show, and I am pleased I can get all the songs on CD now.

Thanks for telling us. Will put this on my x-mas list.

How the mighty have fallen! At least he is still recording though I guess which is good for his fans....

Gareth is working his socks off at the moment. He has said he is putting aside the music for the moment but will be back to it later. And to be honest the way the music industry is at the moment, I think he's made a very good choice.

I went to the Stiles & Drewe show back in the Summer. It was fantastic. Here are a couple of clips of two of the songs Gareth sang

And on a shallow note - has learned some dancing skills (at 2.56 in this clip)

Oh and his voice has certainly deepened/matured  .

He seems to be throwing himself into it. In for a penny and all that. :yahoo:

That's one of the things I love about Gareth. He embraces everything he does and seems to have a ball. Did you see him on Loose Women last week chatting to Emma Bunton? I see she too is very excited about him taking over from Lee next year in Joseph. :dance

Any excuse to touch him too!

Thanks for the you tube links, lovely to see it again. I cant wait to hear the songs properly on the cd, did not think we would get to hear them again. Its a lovely surprise they release the cd, and in a good cause too. :cheer:

The Cd gets a mention in USA too. :cheer:

In the liner notes, Stiles and Drewe comment, "The CD features songs from all of the musicals we have written, as well as a sneak preview of some of the new shows we're writing. There are six tracks from our forthcoming Soho Cinders featuring the wonderful Gareth Gates with the full company, as well as some of our cabaret songs — so there are many world premiere recordings to enjoy."

Love this bit, Styles and Drewe think highly of Gareth.

My delivery date has been delayed until 18th Dec. They must have underestimated the demand.

Was so looking forward to receiving it today :(

My copy arrived today!

It's a really good CD and it's great to hear Gareth's voice in a good quality, live recording like this. The quality isn't masked by too much production. I like a lot of the other songs too. My least favourite is the first one, because it's too warbly and old-fashioned musically, but there are a lot of good tunes in there as well as plenty of humour. I wouldn't be surprised if Soho Cinders is announced to open in the West End soon, and I can't help but think they are nurturing him for it, as they say some very nice things about him in the sleeve. It would be a natural progression from Joseph.

Off topic, but this is the newest Gareth thread, so I'll post here. Just wanted to say, I'm going to see Cinderella tomorrow and am really looking forward to it. Have only ever seen 1 panto before, back in the early 90s. It's my January treat. :D
I have to say I like Gareth Gates but I bought his album 'Pictures Of The Other Side' for 50p in the Woolies closing down sale and its shocking - Glad I didn't pay more for it! :heehee:

Had a great time yesterday at the panto. :) I was actually front row (didn't know beforehand that I would be). My only criticism of the show would be that it was over-long, they could have cut down a little on the ugly stepsisters and Button's bits, but then I guess those parts are the most fun for the little children.

The costumes were gorgeous (and truly garish when it came to the ugly stepsisters ). Gareth's singing was good, he has improved a lot since PI and is now virtually pitch-perfect, and his diction has improved, too, which is very important for musical theatre, so I guess this is good training for him for Joseph. His acting was good, too, not a single glitch or hiccup in his speech! :) I guess for him, speaking is easier when it's scripted than when he's in an interview situation and has to think and speak "on the hoof" so to speak.

Joanna Page (Cinderella) was the weaker singer of the two females, but she was sweet. The lady who played the fairy godmother (Louise s.th. I think) sang really well.

Met an elderly Gareth fan who was also in the front row. She told me she'd been 17 times to see the show! :o That's devotion. Don't think I could stand that, even if all my favourite singers filled the main roles. She had a banner that read s.th. like "Gareth, supporting you always", which she was hoping to get signed afterwards. Hope she managed to meet him or sees him on one of the other occasions she's seeing the show.

I think I will try to get tickets for Joseph. :D

Glad you enjoyed it Toni. I've not seen it yet, but everyone seems to have good things to say about it. I'm going on Sunday. Never thought the day was going to come around. I seem to have been waiting for ages.

Just have to say I received my Stiles & Drewe CD a few weeks ago and its fantastic. There are four of the songs Gareth sang on the night on there and I love all of them. I think my favourite is `Gypsies of the Ether'. Gareth's voice had matured so much in the last couple of years although I've always thought it was outstandingly good. Its just different now I think. I would recommend this CD to anyone interested in Musical Theatre.
