Considering Lebron James and Kobe Bryant are both American..they stand no chance of winning?

If Andy Murray can win a Tennis Grand Slam along with continuing his outstanding form then he should be favourite. If Lewis Hamiton retains his F1 world title he would probably finish 2nd for the 3rd year running.

Personally I'd love to see Phil "The Power" Taylor recognised for his 14 World Titles & his continued strangehold on the Game of Darts.

Oooh. Yeah, I think Andy Murray stands a very high chance. As for Phil, he is extremely talented darts player and I am in support of him winning the award, there would probably be the argument similar to the one you get for Lewis Hamilton. You'll find a lot of people saying that darts shouldnt be a sport and that its good at a pub and thats about it. So, I'm not sure he would get enough of a push to win it. But, really, anything could happen during this next year, at this point last year, I would never have thought Rebecca Adlington would be a contender, and she popped up as favourite. So, someone who doesnt spring to the mind as obvious could very well be a contender.

No offence, but the best way to reduce spam is to ignore it.

They absolutely have a chance--they are both dominant in the sport. It doesn't matter if they are American or not--that is just my opinion

Oh but it does...... Because the award can only be won by a Brit. :D

I think Lewis H does deserve to win it eventually :P But I'm thinking this year will be Murray's year :)

Hamilton or other drivers should not win it

They are merely the front man for a team of engineers and designers, it is the car that wins titles the driver merely has to steer it so Hamilton would be nothing without his car, put him in a Force India he would get 2 points in a season

The likes of Murray and so on are individual performances whereas Hamilton etc is a team performance

If Andy Murray wins Wimbledon he'll win this years award easily imo.

But there's 10 months to go, so anything could happen yet.

So is cycling & swimming (both Team GB had top secret kits produced specifically for the Olympics that were destroyed after the Olympics because they had legally enabled them to do better than previously expected and they did not want the opposition to get their hands on what they wore), and obviously all team sports like Football, Cricket, Horse Racing, etc.

Therefore you could make that case for most sports.

Or do you think Wayne Rooney could win Sports Personality of The Year playing for Yeovil Town?

He won't win it, Nadal and Federer are so far ahead of the rest of them in ability unless both get injured or die then it will be 5 or 10 years before Murray wins any grand slams

The gap really isn't that big between them...

Nadal, Federer, Murray and Djokovic are way ahead of all the other tennis players at the moment, Federer and Nadal are just a little better than the other two at the moment however. On his day (as shown by his performances of late) Murray can beat anyone. There's 3 Grand Slams left this year, and he stands a v.good chance of winning the US Open or Wimbledon imo. Hopefully the latter.

Well Andy Murray opened the year defeating Federer in the Semi & Nadal in the Final to win the 2009 Capitala World Tennis Championship & €250,000. Therefore becoming the first player ever to defeat both in the same tournament.

He followed it up by winning the Qatar Open defeating Federer again in the Semi to win the title.

He went into the Australian Open as favourite to win, only losing in the last 16 through exhaustion in 5 sets due to getting a severe cold that meant he'd spent the previous day in bed ill, and therefore was well below his best (he was sweating badly, burning up via a high temperature) against an opponent he would have expected to easily despatch had he'd been fully healthy.

So far that is his only defeat to date this year.

Currently in his 4th tournament of the Year in Rotterdam he has reached the Final where he will play Nadal (if he wins his SF) in the Final on Sunday.

Murray beats Nadal to take title

BBC Sport News By Piers Newbery

Murray won the 10th title of his career in Rotterdam

Britain's Andy Murray claimed his third successive win over world number one Rafael Nadal to win the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

The 21-year-old Scot came through 6-3 4-6 6-0 in one hour 51 minutes to win the 10th title of his career.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Murray has now beaten both Nadal & Federer in the last three matches he has played against each of the World's Top Two.

Congrats to Murray, although Nadal had a slight injury towards the end. But he needs to beat them in the majors, surely he will soon.

Congrats to him but it is the MAJORS that matter, the big 4 events, winning the Qatar Open or Outer Mongolian Masters just means he is a very good player, he will be judged by me on what he does in the Big 4 events, the fact he regularly beats Nadal and Federer in the ordinary tournaments proves nothing more to me than the fact that Federer and Nadal go on auto pilot to preserve themselves for the big events

Ryan Giggs should get it

35 years old, playing the best he's played in about 5 years, maybe even longer

signed a new contract taking him uptil he's a few months off his 37th birthday

only player to score in every Premiership season

and he's won it 10 times, he's won it 10 times, that boy giggsy has won it 10 times!

Team GB doesn't give a big enough $h!t about swimming to have a tailor made kit. They just used a bog standard Speedo LZR suit. Which was developed by Speedo (An Aussie Company although it is now based in England because of its London based owners. It was born on Bondi Beach, NSW) with the worlds top swimmers including Aussies, Yanks and Good Old Brits.

If anyone would be getting tailor made suits it would be the States (TYR is the only yank company i can name off the top of my head) and the Aussies (Speedo).

There are no major british brands. Paw i think is a uk brand, but i sure as hell wouldn't wear them at Nationals, never mind the Olympics.

Of the year? Oh please. Those stats make him look worthy of a Lifetime Achievement maybe, but of the year... just no, sorry.

Same with footballer of the season. He's played less than 1,000 minutes of Premiership football and played 90 minutes in just 5 of 26 of Man Utd's games. I'm sorry, but there's no way that makes him worthy.

Better than the ones mentioned already, apart from Calzaghe

most of the snobs who win do things anyone could do, really
