46 Kelly Rowland Work [Freemasons Radio Edit]

-17.07.02.03.06-

5wks

I imagine that at Freemasons HQ they were listening to their copy of the flawless Ms Kelly album and thought 'hmm, Work is a bloody good song but it's not very commercial. Let's gay it right up and get Kelly a hit!'. And they did. This is absolute heaven, quite possibly the best 'Masons mix.

Definitely one of my top faves this year! love it!

35 Sugababes Side Chick

-02.02.06.11.14.17-

6wks

Unusual for a 'Babes song in that there are no solo vocals from Heidi, Side Chick is a slick pop&b number not dissimilar to anything Robyn has put out recently, least of all Handle Me. My first reaction to this when the album leaked was 'wow'. It feels like a really delicate song. Lovely vibe.

34 The Veronicas This Love

-06.12.14.20.19.09.10.18.20.22.25-

11wks

This is such a delight! The delicious Veronica sisters ditched the shoutyness for one single only, and unleashed this subtly swizzy piece of electro-lite. It's cute and generally uninvasive, perhaps explaining why it became their smallest hit in a fair while. I'd love a UK release! *Dreams*

33 Natasha Bedingfield Put Your Arms Around Me

-10.07.11.17.X.15.12.14.24-

8wks

This song is adorable. One of the newies from her Pocketful album, quite how it escaped the single treatment really is beyond me, because the production is so warm and the hook is so big that it was a surefire hit. One of NB's finest moments.

32 Solange Sandcastle Disco

-04.03.08.08.07.16.23.18-

8wks

Ahhh, this is what Solange is all about. Her album is pretty rubbish but when she's good, she really is great, and Sandcastle Disco is her finest moment. Love the summery vibe, the sheer joy of it all. Real shame it never got a push and ended up hitting the top 165 or something silly!

31 Usher Moving Mountains [FP Radio Edit]

-04.02.02.03.08.24.23-

7wks

'Full Phatt' may have the dodgiest name in all of the remix scene but he/they did a bloody good job with Usher's otherwise-bland second single Moving Mountains. Post-remixation the song became an addictive little ditty filled with synths of the 'ooh' kind. If only the original had been produced like this! They will never learn.

30 Sugababes Never Gonna Dance Again

-17.08.06.06.13.20-

6wks

This is only so low because I played it a hell of a lot in 2007 too. The cursed second song off Change (we all know that second songs on tracklists never become singles) it really could've followed About You Now with similarly big sales, but instead the lovely if non-commercial title track got a release. The verses especially make this. For once Heidi doesn't steal the song!

29 Trina Single Again

-03.08.16.X.07.08-

Trina rapping over christmas bells - NOTHING could be better than that, no?! This is utter perfection. She and Eve really turd all over the other female rappers so it's a shame neither really gets any recognition any more. Anyway this is one to check out if you enjoy sexy lyrics at christmas time, woo.

28 Rogue Traders I Never Liked You

-16.12.12.13.12.11.01.06.12-

Heyyy, SURPRISE! Proper addictive stuff from the RTs here. Of course with that there's always the danger of the magic fizzling out fairly quickly, as did happen here, but no matter, it's still a highlight of the very decent Better In The Dark album. I'll miss them.

27 Christina Aguilera Keeps Gettin' Better

-07.05.04.12.25.X.03.06.09-

The most marmite song left on my countdown? Perhaps. For some oddball reason the majority of rubbishgays chose to listen to Womanizer instead of this gem (you DO have to choose btw, you can NOT enjoy both). I'm not sure why since this has the whole massive chorus thing going on, which I am a big sucker for. All she needs is slightly crisper production and she'll be huge again...

For AGES this was my favourite on Discipline. Then I saw the light and realised that Feedback and Rock With U pap all over it, the production on this being surprisingly cheap for a Darkchild adventure. Still, it's wonderfully feel-good and catchy. Another case of should've done the business for poor Jan, but didn't.

25 Sugababes No Can Do

-22.15.15.03.02.06.04-

7wks Still charting

Everybody knows this and knows it's on its way to a huge flop, which is a shame because it's a genuinely great, catchy pop song with some nice old-school funk type influences; the Orson boys always do great work with the 'Babes (Easy, Denial) and this is no exception. Of particular greatness are Heidi's stroppy bridge and Amelle's telephone outro. Can't go wrong with telephone mentions in pop songs, but they definitely missed a trick not having blatant Nokia product placement in the video! Then again, About You Now made up for THAT...

24 Fergie Labels Or Love

-20.07.05.07.12.06.06.07.12.22-

110ks

Gloriously trashy, Labels Or Love was the Sex & The City theme song and samples that show's themetune. Although The Dutchess was pretty much dead by the time it was re-re-re-released with this as lead single in the US, it got me pretty interested, to the extent that I bought the album and discovered it was actually pretty good. Not pant-wettingly amazing, but Fergie might beg to differ.

23 Sneaky Sound System Pictures

-13.02.02.02.02.07.23-

7wks

Australian disco-pop lives on thanks to Sneaky, whose single Pictures has a glimmering 70/80s dancefloor vibe. It's all about Miss Connie's brash vocal over those sharp synths. A wonderful case of a pop song being shamelessly poppy without relying on cleverness. Sneaky, some may say.

22 Mariah Carey Bye Bye

-13.10.10.14.16.X.13.04.03.04.23-

10wks

MC might be wishing she never released this since it effectively allowed the public to kiss bye bye to her album project and possibly her career, but it's still a lovely song. My particular favourite thing about it is singing about loss whilst grinding against Nick Cannon in the video. Nothing like celebrating a life eh Mimi?

Lordy, lordy, lordy. I'ma hire two bodyguards to protect me from the wrath of the BJ pensioners I think, for they will not appreciate this being so high in my countdown, or they wouldn't if they noticed. Again, nothing innovative here, just a funky, addictive pop song with a nice electronic backing nicked from the otherwise-intolerable Yazoo. Yahoo!

20 Nas Hero ft.Keri Hilson

-10.10.11.06.03.03.10.15.21.17-

10wks

The highest male-sung moment on my countdown, Hero is a fabulous synth-hop affair. Keri's involvement is light as she tinkles the odd word in the chorus behind Nas' somewhat more forceful delivery. Truly the highlight of his career to date, it's a shame it failed to take off anywhere, although its continued appearance at the bottom of the UK itunes chart showed some promise. Which sort of sums Nas' career of late up - lots of promise, little success.

19 Kylie Minogue Like A Drug

-10.05.08.08.11.X.05.02.08.13-

9wks

So what do you get if you take the vibe from Dannii's Neon Nights epic and add her older sister's vocals over the top? Like A Drug, a dark and moody number which absolutely should've been X's lead single. It's the highlight of a mixed album; nothing comes close to that big chorus in which K-Mo fantasises about getting down. She's so hood.

18 Janet Jackson Rock With U

-08.07.06.03.15.X.17.15.19.18-

9wks

From one disco princess to another, Rock With U, produced by Janet's boyf Jermaine Dupri, is a true modern classic. It's revoltingly underrated, but its simple verse-chorus structure, repeated three times over a synthy melancholic beat, is a true winner. If you enjoyed Feedback and like the idea of Janet singing the sorts of songs a Minogue would make, check this out asap.

17 Kelly Rowland Daylight ft.Travis McCoy

-20.14.02.01.08.16.X.19.19.X.16.14.20-

11wks

First off, shut it James. Now that that's out the way, let's rave about this summer cocktail from K-Ro and her sexual accomplice Travis McCoy, of Gym Class Heroes 'fame'. It's a swingingly joyful cover of a 1976 Bobby Womack song; McCoy's rap is perfectly-judged and trusty old K-Ro truly sounds as if she's loving what she's singing, which is more than could be said for a certain ex-bandmate of hers...

16 Goldfrapp A&E

-01.03.03.04.06.06.03.02.20-

9wks

She's in a backless dress, don't you know? One of only a smithering of good songs from their misguided fourth effort Seventh Tree, A&E is just about the perfect lead single. It feels as if it was designed to make the statement of 'we are BACK!' without slapping anybody across the cheek, instead slowly caressing their thigh. I hope I'm getting across how much I love this song instead of merely sounding like an erotic dreamer.

Adore every song there. Except Daylight, the overated drivel we don't mention.

15 Lady GaGa Poker Face

-06.05.06.11.14.11.15.24.X.15.03.11-

11wks

One of the rare instances where it's possible to predict a smash with near-certainty, Poker Face is a song of contrasts, slithering from a dirty bass verse into an explosive, melancholic chorus with one of the most simple and effective melodies of 2008. Get it gaygay.

14 Alesha The Boy Does Nothing

-06.12.01.01.04.01.06.14.18-

9wks Still charting

When I heard the clip of this for the first time I literally could not believe the goddess behind the genius of Lipstick was inflicting such trash on us. And then I saw sense. The Boy Does Nothing is immensely addictive and intensely ridiculous. It's a rare case of Xenomania being kookie without trying too hard, probably thanks to la Dixon's influence. And the best news is it's not even the best song on her album!

13 Mariah Carey Touch My Body

-05.03.06.05.03.02.01.02.05.16-

10wks

After reading the inevitable press hype which accompanies new Mimi music, I was expecting something altogether more substantial as her lead single; Touch My Body, lighter than a dieting feather, was a bit 'umm..?' for a few listens, and then it kicked in. Its appeal lies in being SO simple and floaty, but that also proved its downfall for many, who tired of it after a short time. That did happen with me but now I can play it and smile again. God only knows what she'll think in ten years when she looks back on that youtube reference though LOL.

12 Ashlee Simpson Little Miss Obsessive

-20.07.04.06.03.03.01.01.04.14.20-

11wks

A gorgeous piano-assisted midtempo tailor-made for radio, LMO suspiciously became Ashlee's 'lead single' when Outta My Head failed to impact the charts - and yet amazingly this was outperformed on the charts by the latter song! A true pop injustice. The shameful label that is attached to enjoying any music by Ashlee Simpson properly hindered this three minute slice of genius. I should stop, I'm welling up.

11 Sugababes Girls

-18.04.03.05.05.02.02.01.01.08.20.20-

12wks

First off, I know you all hate it. But you all suck! (Not really, carry on commenting my chart plsss). Regardless of popular opinion I do still love me some Girls. The intro and verses are fabulous, especially Keisha's which is a nice change from the norm of Heidi getting the best bits in every Suga single. I understand how the chorus could grate on people, but this definitely didn't/doesn't deserve the hate dished on it here on Buzzjack/the internet in general. Oh well. *Sigh*

Little Miss Obsessive   I was devastated when there was no UK release and no video

Love all five!

'Little Miss Obsessive' should've blatantly been a worldwide hit tho.

What a lovely surprise it was when Janft, from whom I could only remember liking one previous single, turned out this electropop masterpiece courtesy of Darkchild. Nobody else could combine lyrics about asian persuasion and first-day periods and get away with it, though you could say Janft didn't get away with it, given that a total of about three people bought into this era. Oh well, amaze all the same and shame on the UK for ignoring it.

09 Jennifer Hudson Spotlight

-13.05.05.07.08.08.04.03.12.X.06.09.08.10.24-

14wks Still charting

Old-school! Spotlight is just the right combo of vintage RnB balladry and modern production to make for a great, very genuine song. The quality speaks for itself when you consider how radio play alone, not including a single spin from Radio 1, turned Spotlight into an unexpected Top 10 hit.

08 Lady GaGa Just Dance

-01.02.09.14.12.14.13.10.09.08.07.06.13.19.17.24.X.12.24-

18wks

Being shouted at by a pop singer is not always the nicest thing but when GaGa orders you to just dance there's little you can do but succumb; after all her song of the same name is one of the most infectious, commanding floorfillers of the year. I can also relate muchly to the lyrics, though when I'm gone I usually lose money and not my keys, sadly.

07 Sugababes Denial

-15.10.07.09.07.01.07.09.03.06.06.02.04.08.18-

15wks

Who'd have thought my best-performing Suga song of the year would be their third Change single as opposed to their much-anticipated 'comeback'? Well, I highly doubt anybody thought into it BUT I DID. Girls is a great song but Denial is right up there with their very best, all thumping beats and high vocals, the result sounding a bit space-age. It's catchy as they come and it's nice to see Heidi get the chance to properly dominate a Sugababes song. As an aside the video is outstanding. Wooo.

Only #9? YOU CONDONE MURDER.

Great 4 there, GaGa might be slightly higher on mine though :kink: etc. [/plug]

06 Mary J. Blige Stay Down

I was addicted to this for weeeeks. The first time I listened to Growing Pains I knew this was a proper hit-in-waiting, a la Be Without You. Imagine my glee when it was chosen as second single! Imagine my pain when it flopped hardcore! Can't say the Mary-on-icelandic-greenscreen shambles of a vid did it much good, but it remains a wonderfully emotional song. IT GETS ME GOIN IT DOES!

05 Róisín Murphy You Know Me Better

-01.05.02.04.05.05.07.02.02.10.17-

11wks

Chachaa, file this one under unexpected glory. You Know Me Better is an electropop song designed for 2008; not in any way dated but at the same time marvellously old-school. Surprisingly few can do emotion better than Murphy who, despite not having the biggest lungs, conveys it all - misery, lust - extroadinary well. This song is easily the best on her fairly mixed-bag of a sophomore album, subtle as they come. I'm waffling. Absolutely check this out if you've been missing out since its release.

04 Natasha Bedingfield Pocketful Of Sunshine

-04.01.04.05.01.04.09.14.X.11.14.04.06.05.03.03.01.02.04.02.03.08.22.22.10.01.07.17-

27wks

The first time I heard this I knew that I'd love it for a very long time and I knew that it'd be her biggest hit. I was one-and-a-half right! I did love it for months and months, hence the almighty chart run, and it was her biggest hit, but only in the US. Tragically the UK never got to experience the joys of this enigmatic slice of fantasy from NatBed. Though I'm still bummed at her label for that injustice, this song remains her shining moment to date and is a proper reminder to those who doubted the NB album that Natasha is one of the best pop singers of the decade.

So many unjust flops and unreleased songs here! Feedback is truly a pop masterpiece, one of the best electR&B songs of the year...and I think I'm welling up at LMO too :cry: Pocketful of Sunshine also needed release :arrr: Bloody labels! :manson:
Stay Down was OK, there was much better on the album. Pocketful is brilliant though and now my 2nd favorite Natasha song after Soulmate.
