What a shame! WOMBATS (IS THIS CHRISTMAS), and SCOOTER creep in to our top 50, with "JUMP THAT ROCK". GIRLS ALOUD also enter the 50, with "THE LOVING KIND". As do PARAMORE "DECODE". KAISER CHIEFS have problems further down LEONARD COHEN knocks about the top 60 with his original of "HALLELUJAH". Leonard an aquired taste...very nasty taste in my opinion! That`s about all the major preview. How did this mis-hap with Wogan happen last week? Well, I did forget the physicals of it, and only included Monday`s downloads...then it was quite low! A major balls up, there! It should have been at 11, on last week`s "Next Week`s Chart. If that make`s sense!!!!! Last week we had 27 in the top 30 combined albums, and 36 in the top 40 singles chart. Back in 1973, Radio Luxembourg previewed the Christmas top 30 on Tuesday 18th Dec, and came up with this: 01 01 MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY - SLADE  02 10 I WISH IT COULD BE XMAS EVERYDAY - WIZZARD  03 03 YOU WON`T FIND ANOTHER FOOL LIKE ME - NEW SEEKERS 04 02 MY COO-CA-CHOO - ALVIN STARDUST 05 08 STREET LIFE - ROXY MUSIC 06 05 I LOVE YOU LOVE ME LOVE - GARY GLITTER 07 04 PAPER ROSES - MARIE OSMOND 08 07 ROLL AWAY THE STONE - MOTT THE HOOPLE 09 11 AMOUREUSE - KIKI DEE 10 06 LAMPLIGHT - DAVID ESSEX 11 09 TRUCK ON (TYKE) - T.REX 12 20 LOVE ON A MOUNTAIN TOP - ROBERT KNIGHT 13 20 KEEP ON TRUCKIN`- EDDIE KENDRICKS 14 25 VADA VIA - DRUPI 15 12 WHY OH WHY OH WHY - GILBERT O`SULLIVAN 16 27 STEP INTO CHRISTMAS - ELTON JOHN  17 17 MIND GAMES - JOHN LENNON 18 NE THE SHOW MUST GO ON - LEO SAYER 19 30 POOL HALL RICHARD/I WISH IT WOULD RAIN - THE FACES 20 15 WHEN I FALL IN LOVE - DONNY OSMOND 21 29 GAUDETTE - STEELEYE SPAN  22 24 RADAR LOVE - GOLDEN EARRING 23 26 DANCE WITH THE DEVIL - COZY POWELL 24 13 DO YOU WANNA DANCE - BARRY BLUE 25 22 FOREVER - ROY WOOD 26 NE BLACK CAT WOMAN - GEORDIE 27 14 LET ME IN - OSMONDS 28 NE THANKS FOR SAVING MY LIFE - BILLY PAUL 29 28 TAKE ME HIGH - CLIFF RICHARD 30 NE LIVING FOR THE CITY - STEVIE WONDER Radio Luxembourg scored 26 in the 30. 1973 being one of the earliest years with so many Christmas related hits in the chart. Despite a million powercuts that followed shortly into 1974, and Edward Heath`s bad Conservative Party, that led to the three day week...Think the economy is shot today? You ain`t lived!! Luxembourg missed with the GEORDIE single, but were ahead with Stevie Wonder. BILLY PAUL made a small hit twice (73, and 77). TAKE ME HIGH was Cliff`s hit from the Musical Production. OSMONDS everywhere, and along came Marie, a female! GOLDEN EARRING came from Holland with there rock classic. The late COZY POWELL the best drummer in the world. If you flipped the STEELEYE SPAN single, you got THE HOLLY AND THE IVY. What was the connection between The Faces, and Eddie Kendricks? Well Eddie was in the Temptations, and the Temptations also did a song called "I Wish It Would Rain". THE NEW SEEKERS already looked like "You Won`t Find Another Fool Like Me" would top the chart...all over the radio. GARY GLITTER at his best with a big million seller, along with the SLADE hit too. WIZZARD were also annoying the first time around! Actually the WIZZARD hit sounds very much like their previous hit "Angel Fingers". Is that why it didn`t achieve a number one spot? Early DAVID ESSEX, proving well against the likes of ROXY MUSIC and Bryan Ferry. Not forgetting, the late Les Gray with MUD. KIKI DEE got a hit, at last. ROBERT KNIGHT too. Not too mention LEO SAYER. Leo was managed by the late ADAM FAITH. Leo, himself penned the hit "Giving It All Away", earlier in 73 for the WHO`s ROGER DALTREY. Leo appeared on TOTP, dressed as a clown and the show definately went on!
December 15, 200816 yr Thanks Dave! Good stuff. Surprised Geraldine's so low and Jeff's so high on singles... Great retro too. Nice to see Kiki Dee with her first hit, though she was fabulous already in the 60s, when she became one of the first successful white artists on Motown :)
December 15, 200816 yr Both Basshunter songs in the top 40 :o Yeah I'm shocked too. I thought they would end up sabotaging each other... Pretty sure Jingle Bells will be higher by the end of the week
December 15, 200816 yr You see, Tom, I told you both will be top 40. :D OK lets wait until tomorrow for the mids ;)
December 15, 200816 yr Author You see, Tom, I told you both will be top 40. :D OK lets wait until tomorrow for the mids ;) Bit worried about Shakin`Stevens though...He seem`s to have fallen out of the 40! :yahoo:
December 15, 200816 yr I think the Christmas songs will all climb until the end of the week. so we will see lot more Xmas songs in the top 40 on Sunday. But this is only my predictions.
December 15, 200816 yr I think so too. Hence why I've completely ignored all current predictions in the predictions game... :)
December 15, 200816 yr Author I think the Christmas songs will all climb until the end of the week. so we will see lot more Xmas songs in the top 40 on Sunday. But this is only my predictions. Probably right Tom. Quick trivia for you...What was the big Christmas song in 1937? This was as far back as I could get. Do you, or anyone else know the answer?
December 15, 200816 yr Probably right Tom. Quick trivia for you...What was the big Christmas song in 1937? This was as far back as I could get. Do you, or anyone else know the answer? I would have said White Christmas, but maybe that's a bit too late?
December 15, 200816 yr Probably right Tom. Quick trivia for you...What was the big Christmas song in 1937? This was as far back as I could get. Do you, or anyone else know the answer? Not Tom but Ben :D and I don't know, not even my parents were alive in 1937. I should ask my grandparents but they are somewhere else now :o
December 15, 200816 yr Author I would have said White Christmas, but maybe that's a bit too late? Definately not White Christmas, that was 1942. No, it was "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot". It got to number 3 on the sheet music chart. The best known version is by Nat "King" Cole. Though in 1974, a version was released as a single by Anita Harris (who at the time was working alongside, the late great magician David Nixon on ITV).
December 15, 200816 yr Oh OK, I don't know that song at all to be honest, but I know (and hate) Anita Harris...
December 15, 200816 yr Author Not Tom but Ben :D and I don't know, not even my parents were alive in 1937. I should ask my grandparents but they are somewhere else now :o Sorry Ben. I clicked in the wrong place! Dodgy at my age! If you went back to 1939...the first Christmas related number one on the Sheet Music Chart was "I`m Writing A Letter to Santa Claus". I gave up doing that some years ago. I don`t ever remember ever asking for socks, but I still get them every bloody year!
December 15, 200816 yr Thanks Dave! Good stuff. Surprised Geraldine's so low and Jeff's so high on singles... I'm surprised it looks like it could chart this high given its awful iTunes performance so far! Norma
December 15, 200816 yr Author Oh OK, I don't know that song at all to be honest, but I know (and hate) Anita Harris... But she speaks so highly of you, Tom! A very nice lady (with whom I did work with, on occasion in those late 60s).
