December 19, 200816 yr In a nutshell.... The Sats have not exactly set the world alight, all the hype, the press attention, etc, and they got totally outsold by the likes of Metallica and Slipknot in terms of album sales... I agree that The Saturdays have not set the world alight yet but comparing them to the likes of Metallica and Slipknot who have both been around for years, have an established fanbase and returned with highly anticipated albums is not really a good example IMO. Neither Metallica or Slipknot had very successful debut albums either.

Neither Metallica or Slipknot had very successful debut albums either. "Kill Em All" has sold well in the US (3 million copies now), and it was recorded on a budget of about ten quid and a packet of crisps in comparison the ridiculous moolah chucked at The Saturdays... Initially it had a pressing of about 1500 mate and was on a tiny label, and you fail totally to recognise the influential nature of "Kill Em All", it's more what followed it... As for Slipknot, it depends, if you count the first demo-album which Slipknot self-distributed as a full release and only 1000 copies actually exist, then yeah, you have a point... But if you're talking about the "Slipknot" album as in their first release on Roadrunner, then you couldn't be more wrong.... 2x Platinum in the States, Platinum in UK and Australia as well..... Hardly a failure..... The point is, these bands worked to get where they are and have proven themselves, as opposed to The Saturdays who've just had money and marketing chucked at them, and well, it's really not working out too well is it....?
December 19, 200816 yr Here's a truly novel idea. Let's talk about ALPHABEAT. You know it makes sense.
December 19, 200816 yr Here's a truly novel idea. Let's talk about ALPHABEAT. You know it makes sense. Why bother..? they've been dropped.. They are a NON-ACT now.....
December 19, 200816 yr Silly me. I didn't realise it was possible to still enjoy their music post-droppage. :heehee: GOSH

Your comparing global sales though to an act that has only released in the UK. And granted albums by the acts you mentioned might be influential but I doubt anyone would expect any current girlband to release an influential album that will still be talked about in years to come - The are making a fun pop album not seeking credibility or hoping their album will be viewed as a classic in 20 years time. The Saturdays like many acts before them and many acts yet to come are manufactured good fun pop music which obviously the public want looking at the success of such acts. For a band so early into their career in a pop market cluttered with reality winners and rejects and none of the prime TV pop shows there was in the 90s to promote themselves on then they have made a good start - Their career or sales are certainly not amazing but they are good starting point for future success in their genre.

December 19, 200816 yr This is like many threads end up like on here - Either Britney, Leona or The Saturdays getting slagged off. theres a reason for that! ;)
December 19, 200816 yr theres a reason for that! ;) Yeah usually the same set of people who never tire of telling us that certain pop acts are $h!t and yet most of the people that do spend their time in the POP sub-forum which states it is an area for MAUFACTURED pop music ;)
December 19, 200816 yr Just over 100,000 I think. Drop ahoy for Sophie Ellis-Bextor then :kink:
December 19, 200816 yr :o Harsh! They were borderline flops, but with the savage economic downturn on the cards record companies aren’t going to give as much leeway to their artists than in more fair-weather times. I don't think The Saturdays are entirely safe, they could EASILY get dropped before they get to record a second album! :P
December 19, 200816 yr Drop ahoy for Sophie Ellis-Bextor then :kink: As if. Everyone knows she's waiting for the right moment to make her triumphant return to the top of the charts.

December 19, 200816 yr I hope this doesnt make me sound like some demented Saturdays fan but i really dont think they'll get dropped and will pretty much definatly reach the second album stage, obviously id like them to go on further but we'll just have to wait and see. Obviously there's no guarantee but if the same record label keeps the lovely Sophie on after 2 underperforming albums then a middly sucsessful debut for The Saturdays should keep them on for a while at least. Why am i rambling on about The Saturdays in an alphabeat thread LOL
December 20, 200816 yr As if. Everyone knows she's waiting for the right moment to make her triumphant return to the top of the charts. She's been waiting for a good seven years tbh.
December 20, 200816 yr I find this odd. Alphabeat arn't AMAZING, but they're pretty great.. I wasn't a huge fan of their first single, but I've charted Boyfriend, 10 000 Nights of Thunder and their latest song as well. Go-Go was a pile of $h!t, and the rest of the album was MEH, But I thought the singles were decent and preforming quite well. Perhaps we can blame the economic crisis for this, but I doubt it.. a foolish decision I think.
December 21, 200816 yr Rather dissapointing how real good original manufactured pop music gets dropped but the likes of The Saturdays don't.
December 21, 200816 yr I think the main problem with Alphabeat was (judging by their singles as I decided against getting their album in the end) that they seemed like one trick ponies, all of the singles were fairly similar.
